Firm, Comfortable Mattress to Relieve Back Pain.

Hi Pete,

My husband and I are looking for a new mattress.

We’ve been sleeping on a very old one he’s owned long before we even met.

It’s been flipped and spun so many times I’ve lost count.

There’s a huge dip in the center causing us to both roll towards the middle in the night.

I have woken up everyday, for years, with back and neck pain that seems to be getting worse by the day.

Recently, I’ve begun waking up with a sore ear, due to the pillow now I assume.

My boyfriend does not seem to have any those issues but we both toss and turn in the night.

 

I am 5’4”, 120 lbs and sleep mostly only sides and stomach, sometimes my back.

He is 5’7”, 185 lbs and sleeps mostly on his back and sides.

He’s a bit of a caveman so if he could find a slab of rock to sleep on, he would.

He likes a firm mattress. I like firm as well but with some added comfort.

 

Any suggestions for a firm but comfortable mattress that will relieve my back pain?

Hi Jenn,

Since you've been reading the blog, you probably know that memory foam is thee thing to avoid.

Unfortunately, all of the once trusted name brands have gone bad...all using memory foam for the upholstery.

 

The best type of mattress is one with an individually pocketed coil system.

Each coil moves independently from the others, which does a couple of positive things.

1) The contouring support maintains the natural alignment of the spine....excellent support that does a great job of relieving back pain.

2) The coils a 9" tall, compressed into a 7" pocket, so that it always pushing back up against you.

Back Pain on a 2 years old Nova-Form Mattress.

Hi Pete,

We have a 2 years old Nova-Form plush mattress, and we’re both waking up with back pain.

I’m late 50s, 6’2”, 225 lbs., combination side, stomach sleeper.  

My wife is 4’11”, 115 lbs., combination side back sleeper.  

She has occasional sciatica and overall back pain.

 

I wonder if we’re sleep opposites.  

Thinking about an adjustable hybrid split king, maybe a Beautyrest with each twin having different firmness. 

Do you have and mattress suggestions for “sleep opposites” couples?

Hi Roger,

Is "Sleep Opposites" a term you're coining or is it something you're parroting from a salesperson.

I've never heard that term before.

And while couples of vastly different sizes may have different needs, everyone needs a combination of firm support and a comfortable sleeping surface.

When dealing with a 100 lb. difference in weight, the key is in buying a mattress that will hold up well under the heavier of the two....and rotating that mattress regularly from the beginning.

Date of Manufacture on the Law Label, on the Mattress.

Hi Pete, 

I’m really concerned about the date of manufacture on the Law Label, on the mattress. 

Is it really the date it was made or does the retailer apply law tag or date before delivery? 

I just received a new mattress yesterday that says was manufactured 4 days ago. 

My biggest worry is receiving a returned/exchanged mattress that they try to make appear new. 

Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Hi Christine,

To alter that tag, as you fear, would be a federal crime.

I’ve never heard of that ever being done.  

You have nothing to worry about, as far as that's concerned.

You should worry, more, about the contents of the mattress.
