Hi Pete
Six years ago, we upgraded to a bigger house, so we went from a Posturepedic Reserve Holly Springs queen-sized mattress to a Posturepedic Sedgebrooke king-sized mattress.
The Holly Springs is now our guest bed and I still miss it!.
We have the Sedgebrooke on a basic platform frame.
We love the size of the king, but we've come to hate this particular mattress.
It has developed deep indentations from where my husband and I sleep. Rotating the mattress does little to help.
(he's 6' 200 lbs, I am 5'7" 140 lbs).
I am primarily a side sleeper, while my husband is a side and back sleeper.
I've also noticed I'm sleeping hot on this mattress, but that could also be my age (we're both 50).
Would you recommend a latex topper to get more use out of the Sedgebrooke?
Or should we start over with a new mattress?
After reading your blogs, I'm open to spending money on a new quality mattress.
But I'd like to get more than six years worth of use out of it!
Thanks, Amy
Hi Amy,
8 years ago, Sealy was purchased by Tempurpedic.
The Holly Springs, being older, was much better made and contained no memory foam.
There hasn’t been a Sealy Posturepedic mattress made that’s worth buying since Tempurpedic bought them...upholstering everything with memory foam.
It’s the memory foam, a temperature sensitive material that absorbs your body heat and reflects it back to you, which is causing you to sleep hot.
Memory foam softens as it warms, allowing you to sink into it.
It’s not very resilient to start and loses its resiliency in a short time.
All of the name brands have been sold to investors and all are using memory foam to recoup their investment and enhance profits.
Memory foam is specifically designed to cause a mattress to need frequent replacing.
The result? Selling more mattresses more frequently to the same people.
It really has been a boon for the industry, but a nightmare for the consumer.
Even now, few people know that the memory foam is a problem.
So much money is spent advertising it as though it were the best thing since sliced bread.
Had you added a latex topper when it was new, all this would have been prevented.
The latex topper would have created a barrier between you and the memory foam.
The memory foam would not have been able to react to your body heat.
Now, it’s too late for that.
Memory foam consists of 61 different chemicals.
Some of those chemicals, like formaldehyde and benzene, are toxic and off gas their toxicity....as if the poor quality weren’t bad enough...adding insult to injury.
Of course, you couldn’t have known all this 6 years ago.
You, naturally, operated under the assumption that the quality you had experienced with the Holly Springs would continue with your next Sealy mattress.
We had been a Sealy/S&F dealer when Tempurpedic bought both companies.
We stopped selling those brands at that time because we already knew how bad memory foam is. So, we had to go shopping at the industry trade shows to find high quality alternatives
The mattress I’m recommending for you is the same mattress my wife and I sleep on at home.
After several years, with each of us weighing more than 200 lbs. this mattress is still in like new condition.
The upholstery is Natural Talalay Latex. Latex is and has been the best upholstery material for the last 100 years.
Latex is the antithesis of memory foam in every way.
That mattress is the Natura of Canada Greenspring Ultra Plush.
