Hi Sylvia,

Tempurpedic uses memory foam, which is a lousy product for a great number of reasons.

One of those reasons is that it sleeps hot.

Sleep Number also uses memory foam, which located just under the zipper on cover.

The solution is easy and not terribly expensive.

Unzip the cover and measure the thickness of the memory foam pad.

Then, simply replace that with all natural latex of the same thickness.

Latex is all natural and sleeps cool naturally.

Fibromyalgia. A Soft Talalay Latex Mattress Topper to Relieve Pain.

We really need your help. We bought a Dana Shores model 950452-350 made by National Bedding Co. queen size mattress about a year ago. 

We have it on a platform bed (no box springs). 

My wife has had fibromyalgia for about 10 years, pretty much her whole body hurts in bed and she really struggles to get sleep. 

She weighs 118 lbs. I do wake up sore and stiff, but I do get sleep. I weigh 270 lbs. We really need to get the bed to a point my wife can get some sleep. 

I think I will be able to adjust to what ever helps her out. 

Do we need to change to a system with box springs? This would mean getting a new bed frame as it would be too high to get in bed if we added box springs
to what we currently have. Please help me out here as I really want to help my wife get some rest.

Hi Kent,

Your platform bed is fine. Changing to boxsprings will not help the surface comfort of the mattress.

Adding a soft Latex topper will do a fine job of softening the surface, without sacrificing the underlying firm support, which someone your size must have.

The good news is, you have the support you need. More good news is that you don't need a new mattress.

Soft Talalay Latex is the best you can do for your wife. Most other products flatten out quickly, while the latex will remain like new for many years.

Only petite people, like your wife, benefit from the 3". My concern is that it will be too great a depth of softness for you.

If your wife's fibro isn't terribly severe, go with the 2", as it will be comfortable for her and not too soft for you.

Simmons Beautyrest Black Ava 'Plush' Mattress.

Hi Annette,

On our website, we don't even offer the plush models because they always end up in a warranty claim.

The plush models are always weaker than the firm models.

My recommendation is for a Luxury Firm Ava, topped with a 2" soft Talalay Latex topper.

This provides long lasting comfort that sleeps cool, while the memory foam in the mattress sleeps hot.

The latex is extremely resilient, which absorbs so much of your body weight, that it slows the wear of the inferior foams used in the mattress.

It sounds like your mattress is just too firm, if that topper worked for a little while.

You bought a memory foam topper, which lasts only a short while.

What works, works well, and for many years, is a latex topper. 

Add a 3" soft Vytex Dunlop latex topper and you'll transform your mattress into an extremely comfortable bed.

While you're there, you might as well try the latex pillows. They are very soft and and very long lasting.

The Pure Bliss Latex/Down pillow is especially good for relieving chronic neck pain. It works well on my arthritic neck.

Your observations should speak volumes to you...more than any other information you can gather. Those floor samples are less than a year old, with them only being tried and not slept in.
What you've seen is how unevenly the best mattresses can wear.
My wife and I have an older version of the Simmons Black Edenton luxury firm..
We weigh approx. 225 pounds each and the mattress looks and feels like new.
How is this possible? It's possible because we took precautions. From the beginning, we've used a 2" latex topper on it...a removable pillowtop. 
Latex is the most comfortable and resilient material on the planet. The topper absorbs most of our weight and that relieves the stress on the padding in the mattress. The coil system of the Black models is very strong. Together with the topper, they provide all the support, comfort and longevity we need and want...regardless of your sleeping position(s).
Of course, it helps to have a complete working knowledge of the mattress industry. Most people don't. So, instead of countless years of personal study on the subject, you can't simply take my advice. (it's a whole lot easier). 
Go with the Oceanside, called Alexia on our website, and add a latex topper for comfort that doesn't quit in a few years.
It's the only way around keeping what you saw from happening to you.

Sealy Reflexion Newport Beach Latex Mattress Replacement.

What do you recommend to minimize the ‘hot feeling’ of latex (from the topper), that is, get the prior innerspring only cool, cotton sheet feel? Is there something you can place on top of the latex topper? I recall the older mattresses had a wool layer underneath the quilt that dissipated heat.

You have an incorrect assumption that latex sleeps hot. It does not. My wife and I have been using the same 2" soft Latex topper for the past 6 years. It's still like new, after all that time, and has never slept hot. Latex sleep cool, naturally.

The Simmons Beautyrest Black holds up well under heavy body weight...if you use a latex topper with it. The latex insulates you from the memory foam, makes the mattress more comfortable, and greatly slows the wear of the memory and poly foams inside.

If you want to mimic what we have, it would be the Ava luxury firm and a 2" soft Talalay latex topper.

My wife, who is a little heavier than your wife, has been comfortable on that for the past 4 years.

We went with that mattress because I wanted to test the durability. I already knew it would be comfortable. Now, after 4 years, I am satisfied with the results.

That said, we have also missed sleeping on a latex mattress. So, we just ordered a Bourdolay Firm model from Natura, with which we will be using our soft latex topper.

We've had latex mattresses in the past. They have always been the most comfortable and the most durable.

We went with the "Firm Mattress & Soft Topper" combination because I too am heavy and have disc problems.

However, you and your wife are likely to be happy with the Bourdolay in Plush.
