Too often, those suffering from the pain of Arthritis and/or Fibromyalgia will buy a soft mattress, only to find that it wears out much too quickly.
These are common mistakes.
Simply put, your body has two parts…the inside and the outside…and, you need to fill the needs of both parts in order to make a successful purchase…and to get that great night’s sleep you’re after.
Coincidentally, a mattress has two parts too…the inside, (The Support), and the outside, (The Comfort Layers).
Addressing the Fibromyalgia issue is easier than you might think, so let’s start with the inside….the “Support” part of the mattress.
There are a variety of ways to get the right support for your particular needs and set of circumstances.
A mattress is a pressure sensitive item. The wear of the mattress is in direct relation to the pressure placed upon it….your body weight.
If you want your mattress to last, the support part of the mattress needs to be durable. How strong that support needs to be, depends on how much you weigh.
The one thing we all have in commons, is a spine that requires reasonably firm support…the degree of that firmness varying in relation to body weight.
Since 80% of you fall within the range of what is considered normal, that is to say, “Average Body Weight”, let’s start there.
Keeping the Fibromyalgia in mind, and at average weight, your best options are either a pocketed coil or an all foam mattress. (Not Memory Foam)
An all foam mattress can include an all latex mattress, or a latex hybrid, which used a high density polyurethane foam core and a latex top…if you have no back problems.
Since many people with fibromyalgia also suffer with some sort of back pain, the pocketed coil is your bet option for that.
There are many mattresses that offer a pocketed coil unit. The original is the Simmons Beautyrest…since the 1920s.
The coils in the Beautyrest are barrel shaped and pre-compressed into the pocket. Most other brands that have a pocketed coil are hour glass shaped, with the coil and the pocket at the same height.
Only the pre-compressed pocketed coils push back up against your spine for the best type of support that maintain the natural alignment of your spine.
The starting model in the Simmons Beautyrest World Class Series, in Luxury Firm is the best mattress for that.
(Since the model names change every couple of years, I have omitted that)

If you have no problems with your back, an all latex or latex/hybrid mattress is an excellent choice. The all latex mattresses, (also introduced in the 1920s), has always been considered, “The Best You Can Buy”, due to their extraordinary longevity.
If you’re looking to go “Organic”, We have a nice selection of latex mattress from Palmpring:

For those of you Fibro patients who happen to be “Petite”, weighing under 150 pounds, the above options also work for you.
However, your lighter body weight affords you the ability to go with something less expensive.

If your body weight is reaching upwards of 300 pounds, the Natura Greenspring or one of the all latex mattresses, are your only choices.

The pocketed coils and the foam mattresses are the best type of support for Fibro patients, as the help to reduce the pressure points.
However, if your body weight exceeds 300 pounds, you may want to consider a stronger coil unit….specifically, the Bonnell Coil…also introduced in the 1920s.
Other than the pocketed coil from the Simmons Beautyrest, all other brands used the Bonnell coil from the 1920s until 1980s. It was the Work Horse of the industry.
And this is what we turn to for support when body weight exceeds 300 pounds.
The good news is, these are not expensive mattresses.
There are three models. The plush model for 300 to 350 pounds. The Luxury Firm for 350 to 400 pounds. The Firm if in excess of 400 pounds.
Made by Wolf, (A very old (1873)), family owned and operated Midwest manufacturer, these mattresses are two sided, flippable, old fashion mattresses.

Now that the inside of your body has the long lasting support it needs, it’s time to address the out side of you body…cushioning the Fibromyalgia with the the additional comfort layers needed.
We start with an All Natural Latex Mattress Topper….(Not Memory Foam).
There are many types of latex on the market. Most of what you’ll find is blended latex, (30% natural & 70% synthetic), which is not as durable as 100% All Natural.
Also, most these that are labeled as “Soft” are not as soft as the all natural latex that we offer.
Also, you’ll find some latex out there that is much lower in price. These come from China, where they add clay as a filler…still able to call it natural, but again, not as soft and with much shorter longevity.
We carry two types of latex…Vytex Dunlop & Talalay….with Talalay being the more supple and softer of the two.
For most of you, the EverEden 2″ Soft Talalay Latex is the one to get…offering UPS Delivery to all 50 States & Puerto Rico…shown here:
https://themattressexpert.com/talalay-dunlop-latextoppers/
It’s common to think that if 2″ of latex is good, 3″ must be better. That, is not always so.The 3″ offers a greater depth of softness. For Petite people 150 pounds or less, who exert very little pressure, the 3″ Soft Talalay is a good option.
But for the rest of you, the extra depth of softness allows you to sink where your heavier, throwing off the natural alignment of you spine.
Between 150 and 250 pounds, stick with the 2″ Soft Talalay. It’s the one that gets all the rave feedback and it’s what we use at home.
The Dunlop is a bit more dense. For those of you between 250 and 300 pounds, go with the 2″ Soft Dunlop. or the 2″ Medium Talalay.
If you are over 300 pounds, use the 2″ Medium Dunlop.
The reason for starting with one of these latex topper, when addressing Fibromyalgia, is because latex toppers are a maintenance free product.
It comes covered in a nice knit fabric, which stretches…allowing you to get the most benefit from the contouring property of the latex.
The cover comes with corner straps, which hook around the corners of your mattress, keeping it in place.
It is, a set it and forget it product…and lasts for many years.
The one we have at home is several years old and still in like new condition.
If you live in Canada, the latex toppers from Natura are the ones to get…offering UPS Delivery to ALL Canadian provinces.
The Natura Latex Toppers are U.S. made blended Talalay Latex and sport a bit of wool at the top. These are also available for delivery to the U.S…shown here:
