A Mattress for Fibromyalgia and Scoliosis.

Hello Pete
I'm 5' 7" 158 lbs female with scoliosis and fibromyalgia. 
I'm active but have always experienced chronic muscle tightness and sleep problems. 
I can fall asleep fine but can't stay asleep and get hot easily. 
I'm a side sleeper with body pillow for correct alignment. 
 
I bought a memory foam topped mattress that sagged about 2 years after I purchased the mattress.  
I don't want to experience the sagging problem again and know the memory foam sleeps hot.
What mattress would you suggest?

Memory foam will never produce the results you're looking for.

Delivered Simmons Beautyrest Mattress, Not The One We Ordered.

I came across the website while researching mattresses. (very good info there). 
Last week I bought a Simmons Beautyrest Silver Series mattress, from a store here in Texas. 
The salesman we have been dealing with is a bit shoddy and knows nothing about his products.
Delayed delivery, lots of excuses, etc. I get the feeling of being hustled.
 
Once we finally received the mattress, it was not even the one we ordered. 
My worries are this. Could their mattresses be knock offs?
I looked around on your website for similar topics but didn't come across anything. 
Any advice or help would be greatly appreciated!!

Hi Eric,
In all my nearly 50 years in the furniture/mattress industry, I've never heard of knock off mattress.
The four major problems are:
1) Bait and Switch, (Very common among some mattress chain stores)
2) Reconstituted mattresses. (Reupholstered, used mattresses...mostly sold in the inner city)
3) Clearance Centers. (Selling manufacturer's defects, bought for pennies on the dollar and sold as new)
4) Mattress stores selling customer returned mattresses as new. 
    (As illegal as that is, it happens all the time...thanks to the "Comfort Guarantee" scam.
 
My advice?
Send it back for a refund and start over. (Never buy from someone you know you can't trust)

Mattress, Latex Topper and Pillow Recommendation for My Needs

Sealy or Simmons Beautyrest Mattress for My 5 Yr Old Son?

Hi Melissa,
The Simmons Beautyrest mattresses, also use memory foam, but there is a difference.
The memory foam, Simmons uses, is cured. It does not off gas the toxic chemicals from which memory foam is made.
This is not so for Sealy mattresses. The acrid smell that a Sealy mattress has when new, is the off gassing of those chemicals...61 different chemicals, in all.
You'd be subjecting your child to a health hazard. These toxic chemicals attack your respiratory system.
 
The pre-compressed individually pocketed coils, in the Simmons Beautyrest mattresses, contour to the shape of the body and maintain the spine's natural alignment.
This is excellent support for any body. It's especially valuable to a growing child, as this coil unit continually does so throughout his growing years.

The model name, Great Lakes Cove, will be different at every store. 
The Great Lakes Cove is a Silver Series Beautyrest and there's only one Luxury Firm model in that series.
To shop for it, simply ask for the Simmons Beautyrest, Silver Series, Luxury Firm. Regardless of the model name, it will be the same mattress.

Back and Shoulder Pain from a Plush Simmons Beautyrest Mattress.

Hi Pete,
I saw your website, and would like to ask for your advice.
I have a lot of issues with 2 primary areas: lower back and shoulder/neck. 
For years, a firm mattress  was very comfortable for me, but when my neck/shoulder pain started up, I found I couldn't sleep on it any longer. 
I didn't try a topper then. Instead, I bought a new mattress, a plush Simmons Beautyrest. 
The problem is that the mattress is too soft for my back, but wonderful for my shoulder/neck area. 
When my back hurts from having slept on this Beautyrest mattress, I sleep on a wool topper + camping mattress on the floor. 
Then my back feels much better, but my shoulder and neck feel awful. 
Help! I'm not sure what I need to try next. Is the Simmons Beautyrest known as being a too soft mattress? 
Is there anything I could try to make it firmer for my lower back, but to keep the plush cushioning for my shoulder/neck area? 
Is there another combination that you suggest trying?

Hi Joe,

There are two problems with that Simmons Beautyrest, that could have been avoided.

Their plush models are made plush by thinning the steel from which the coils are made, which provides a greater depth of softness.

And, the upholstery is memory foam, which isn't resilient and adds to the over-all softness.

If you had looked at reviews, on line, for Simmons Beautyrest mattresses, you would have found that they are horrible.

The reason why they are soo bad, is due to the the way they're bought and sold.

When you walk into a store, the salesperson takes the path of least resistance and recommends that your choice be based on comfort.

As a result, most people will buy a plush or pillowtop model. Nether holds up well, hence all the poor reviews.

The thinner wire coils and the memory foam in the pillowtops cause premature wear and pain, due the poor support.

If you look at the Simmons Beautyrest models, on our website, you will find NO Plush or Pillowtop models listed.

Even though I have them available to me for sale, I won't sell them because they are soo consumer unfriendly.

 

You don't mention your size, so let me give you the information I use to determine which model I recommend.

The choice depends on the pressure that will be placed upon the mattress.

Smaller size adults: The Simmons Beautyrest Silver Series Great Lakes Cove in Luxury Firm.

Average size adults: The Simmons Beautyrest Platinum Series Gibson Grove in Luxury Firm.

Simmons Beautyrest Plush Silver Mattress Causing Back Pain and Night sweats.

Hello Pete,
About 15 months ago we upgraded from a full to a king size bed. Went to a furniture store and got the mattress there as well. 
We got a Simmons Beautyrest Silver model. No idea what kind but I’d say it’s plush. I thought I wanted soft but boy do I miss my old $300 mattress.
I’ve developed back pain and night sweats with this mattress. At first I thought it was from pregnancy and then hormonal from having a baby. 
Now that my little guy is 14 months old. I know it’s definitely the mattress. 
I’m sure, since it’s over a year, we are stuck with it. Is there anything I can add to firm it up? 
Or, do I need to get a new mattress all together and if so what do you recommend?
PS. My husband loves it so not sure what the compromise is.

Good Morning Alicia,

Whenever we recommend a Simmons Beautyrest mattress, it's a Luxury Firm model with a latex topper.

For a Beautyrest mattress to last, it must have the latex topper on it from the start.

Otherwise, what has happened to you, will happen with all of them.

Frankly, I'm surprised that your husband is ok. He must be reasonably fit..and with no back problems for the mattress to aggravate. 

That doesn't mean it's good for him. A mattress like that will cause problems that don't yet exist, eventually.

 

The problem with a plush Beautyrest is two-fold.

The plush models are made plush by using a much thinner wire for the coils.

The steel, from which the coils are made, is not tempered. Raw steel is not as resilient as tempered steel.

This is why your back hurts. Your spine is not getting the support it needs.

 

Also, the upholstery layers are memory foam.

Memory foam is the worst upholstery material ever invented, with it's sole purpose being to cause a mattress to need frequent replacing.

The mattress industry has been experiencing a boon, because they are selling more mattresses more frequently to the same people.

Memory foam is the only upholstery material that is temperature sensitive. It softens as it warms from your body heat.

Then, it reflects that heat back to you, which is what is causing your night sweats.

 

Once that mattress goes bad, there is no fixing it.

If re-buying a Simmons Beautyrest mattress, you will need a latex topper to go with it.

If you're going out shopping for a new mattress, avoid memory foam, (aka Visco), altogether.

Simmons' memory foam is cured, so that it doesn't off gas the toxic chemicals from which it's made.

This is no the case with most other brands. The off gassing attacks you're respiratory system, with sinus headache being the most common side effect.

 

Before I recommend a mattress, I will need to know the sizes, (heights and weights), of the people using it.

If you get back to me with that information, I'll be happy to offer a recommendation for you and your husband.

Is there nothing that I can put on top to firm it up? 
I actually slept on my old bed last night and felt great with no sweating. My $300 mattress from college is the best, haha. 
I want that in king!! I got it from some wholesale wearhouse. No idea what it’s made of or what brand. 
I definitely don’t want memory foam. I didn’t think we got a memory foam mattress. 
The sales person did Not explain much. It was just soft like a hotel mattress, which come to think of I don’t really enjoy sleeping on.

ALL Simmons Beautyrest mattresses, sold at retail store, are upholstered with memory foam.

Once gone bad, there is NOTHING you can do to make it right.

You can buy a firm latex topper, but that won't improve the lack of support...only make the surface firm and uncomfortable.

 

The foundation you have is fine, so all you need is a mattress.
