Simmons Beautyrest Platinum or Black Mattress for a 290 Lb.

Thank you for taking my call.
I've been told by some salespeople to get the Simmons Beautyrest Platinum, while others have recommended the Simmons Beautyrest Black mattress for us, with my husband weighing 290 lbs.
You advised me that neither will last for very long. And yet, I saw that you sell both on your website.
Now, I'm more confused than ever.
Please clear this up for me and recommend a mattress that will work.

What I had to say to you, appeared to be news to you.
Well, there’s nothing like an education.
 
We carry only a very few of the models Simmons makes.
Those few have their place under specific circumstances.
Your set of circumstances rules out any mattress made with memory foam.
 
I’ve been writing a blog for many years.

The mattress I recommended is made by Natura of Canada.
Their Greenspring line is made like a Simmons Beautyrest.
The differences are:
More and stronger coils than any Beautyrest model.

20 year old memory foam is the worst upholstery material ever invented.

Back, Shoulder, Muscular Pain and Stiffness on an Old Mattress.

Hi Pete,
We have an old mattress. Could you give me a new mattress recommendation? 
I am 58 yr old woman, 140 pounds, a lot of lower back pain, shoulder pain, muscular pain and stiffness throughout. Probably Thyroid related, possible arthritis or maybe Fibromylagia, don’t know! 
Husband is 200-225 but has no complaints, but needs neck support. 
Just want comfort, support, and pain pressure points relieved and feel better when getting up instead of so stiff! 
Can you recommend from two price points, and if a topper should be added with it?

Replacing a 14 year old Simmons Beautyrest Mattress.

I have loved this mattress. I'm worried about the new models with memory foam.

Hi Sally,
You should be worried.
The quality of all of the name brands mattresses have dropped dramatically, since they began using memory foam.
However, there is a way around all that.
The mattress to buy, is The Simmons Beautyrest Platinum Gibson Grove in Luxury Firm.

Buying a Simmons Beautyrest Mattress from a Hotel.

I ran across your blog and read some of the articles. A few things i really had not thought about.

With that said, we bought a Westin Heavenly bed some years ago after staying in a Westin Hotel. 
We still love the mattress but it is now past its time and has indentations in it (an has for years). 
In the last year, or so, we loved the bedding at the Even and Holiday Inn Hotels as well as the Kimpton’s all IHG hotels. When I asked hotel staff at the Even about the mattress, I was told the Simmons Beautyrest Pillow Top. 
Since I was not given the exact details and I know their mattresses are custom made for them, which one? 
Now the Kimpton does sell their mattresses on line to consumers. 
We loved the comfort and cool feel of both Even and Kimpton mattresses. 
But from reading your articles we are hesitate to purchase, fearing we will regret it in a short time. 
And that we will be buying another mattress in short order. 
Based on the information provided, what would you recommend. 
Not sure if this helps, but my wife and I both sleep on our sides.

Hi Curtis,
There's a couple of way to go about this.
Simmons Beautyrests, made for hotels, have no memory foam in them.
Simmons Beautyrests made for retail, are almost all memory foam.
To buy just a mattress, you're better off getting it from a hotel.
However, buying from a hotel gets you a low end, Silver Series Beautyrest, for which you will pay a premium price.
 
My suggestion is to get a Platinum Series Beautyrest in Luxury Firm and adding a 2" or 3" Plush Latex Topper to it.
The Platinum Series has a lot more coils and you can overcome the negative effects of the memory foam with the latex topper.
The latex topper will provide an extraordinarily comfortable sleeping surface and prevent the premature wear of the mattress, caused by the memory foam. In short, it will last a whole lot longer than the manufacturer intended.

Simmons Beautyrest Mattress/Latex Topper Combination.

I recently slept on a mattress at Bally's Hotel and Casino in Atlantic City, New Jersey.  
It was a Simmons Beautyrest Hospitality mattress, and I loved it!    
The hotel's mattress was as soft as a cloud to sink into, and that was its appeal. 
Will the Beautyrest mattress/latex topper combination, you often recommend, feel anything like that?
 
Also, I plan to get a platform bed with storage drawers beneath it.
I wouldn't want to have to use a stool to climb up onto a mattress over a box spring.  Is a box spring necessary?  
Also, what is the thickness is the mattress alone?

When using a platform bed, a boxspring is not necessary.

Plush or Luxury Firm Simmons Beautyrest Mattress and Latex Topper?

Thank you for all the information you provide.
I am trying to decide between the Plush tight top or Luxury Firm tight top Simmons Beautyrest. 
I am a 110 lb.,side/stomach sleeper, and my husband is 6', 200lb. side/back sleeper.
We do not want any memory foam, if possible as we both sleep hot. 
From my research it seems both these models have memory foam.
There doesn't seem to be any other models for us to try out, that doesn't have memory foam.
I understand, from reading your blogs, that a latex topper will keep us from sleeping hot. 
Does that really work?!

Hi Kelly,

You bet it works...works well and lasts a long time. 
Latex is the only product that you can buy, that more than pays for itself...as it also extends the life of the mattress.
The latex topper insulates you from the memory foam in the mattress, and allows you to sleep cooler.
When choosing a Simmons Beautyrest, it's imperative that you DO NOT opt for a "plush" model. 
It will lose its shape quickly under a large man, as the gauge of wire used to make the coils of their plush models, is much thinner than the gauge of wire used to make the coils in their firmer models.
Go for the luxury firm and add the latex topper.
What we recommend is the Simmons Beautyrest Platinum, Gibson Grove model in Luxury Firm.
Add to that, a Pure Bliss 2" Plush Natural Talalay Latex Topper.

A Simmons Beautyrest to Replace a Memory Foam Mattress.

Hi Pete,
We are looking for a new mattress to replace a memory foam one, which we absolutely hate.
After reading tons of your replies, we're leaning towards a luxury firm type mattress with a soft top.
One that seems to fit what we're looking for is the Simmons Beautyrest Platinum Luxury Firm Pillow Top.
Choosing a mattress brand is hard, we don't care what brand name. We just want a good quality mattress.
Wife is 130 lbs, I am 160. 
We rarely sleep together as we work alternating shifts where both of us are on our feet a lot. 
She's a nurse. I'm a policeman.
Trying to keep it soft enough to be comfortable but firm enough to last us a few years within a budget of $2500....mattress only, as we already have a good foundation.

You're on the right track...the right mattress...the wrong top.

Replacing a 10 Year Old Stearns and Foster Blisswood Mattress.

Hi Pete,
My husband and I bought our Stearns and Foster Blisswood mattress from you, 10 years ago. 
We are now hurting, literally. Now looking to replace it.  
Whether we should get a latex topper for immediate relief, a new mattress or both, we wanted your feedback.  
Right now, this mattress lays directly on a wood storage bed and is showing indentations.  
We find ourselves tossing and turning much more in the past few months.  
 
In our 40s stats:
Him:  5’11”, 175, in construction for 20 years.  Lean, strong, fit.  
He had ACDF surgery 2 years ago and is now starting to have lower back pain.  He's a side and back sleeper.
 
Me:  5’4”, 180, desk jockey.  Persistent lumbar pain on the right including hip soreness now.  
More side and stomach sleeper than back unless I have a pillow under my knees.  
 
While morning aches and stiffness are part of the aging process, this mattress is the culprit in recent months.  
Your expertise makes logical, philosophically and anatomical sense. 
But, given our different body types, we’re really lost.

Your mattress has reached the limits of its life.
I have two good options for you.
 
Option #1 includes a latex topper. If going with this option, you might consider getting the latex topper first.
When it arrives, flip your mattress over and apply the topper.
The underside of your one sided mattress is firm and even. Adding the latex topper to the top won't help.
However, the trick of first flipping the mattress has worked well for many.

Which Latex Topper and Pillow for a Simmons Beautyrest Mattress.

I have two questions I hope you are able to answer for me.
 
My husband and I are of average weight and height. 
In the past five years we have purchased two Serta mattresses from our local Macy's.  
Both lasted only 2  years. Macy's is in the process of replacing our second mattress. 
We are considering the Simmons Beautyrest Platinum Luxury Firm, as you have suggested.  
We both have some low back and  hip pain issues.
