Simmons Beautyrest Legend Plush Mattress is at the root of my pain.

First, I want to say thank you for doing what you do...taking the time to share your expertise.

I have two questions for you.

 

I have a Simmons Beautyrest Legend Plush Mattress, bought in 2014.

I believe this is at the root of my pain as I wake up and feel like I just ran a marathon or in a fight.

I feel really out of alignment. Should I get a topper to make this mattress firmer and offer more support?

If so, what kind?

 

Or should I just look into getting a new mattress that you can maybe recommend.

I am almost 50 yrs. old, female, side and back sleeper, 185 lbs., with allergies.

 

Help, I really can’t take much more of this.

Hi Frances,

After all there years, your mattress is no longer providing the support your body needs.

A body requires firm support and a comfortable sleeping surface.

You don’t have the firm support your spine needs.

Adding a topper won’t help.

 

You need to replace that mattress.

Simmons Beautyrest Legend Plush Mattress Arrived Damaged.

I came across your blog and website after looking for help with a recent mattress purchase.

I bought a Simmons Beautyrest Legend in plush. It arrived damaged.

They will be exchanging the mattress later this week.

My question is, should I have them bring me the same mattress or the Luxury Firm model?

Hi Helen,

The gauge of the wire used to make the coils in their plush models, is very thin.

They wear out quickly, and are the source of all of Simmons' negative reviews.

So yes, get the Luxury Firm version of that mattress.

 

There's something else, also very important.

Simmons did not delivery them a damaged mattress.

Stores, like the one from which you bought yours, offer a comfort exchange.

Neither Simmons, nor any of the other name brands participate in this offer.

That store cannot return those sent-back mattress to the factory for credit.

Stores have to do something else with those mattresses.

Many stores will put them on the floor and sell them off at a reduced price as a floor model.

And as illegal as it is, some stores try to pawn them off as new to the next person who wants one.

This is especially true of the store that sells the Beautyrest Legend...there's only one store that has that label.

 

So, to ensure that you are getting a new mattress, you have to inspect the packaging.

To hide the fact that it's a used mattress, the delivery guys are instructed to unpack it in the truck.

Make sure you tell the store manager that you insist it be unpacked in your home, and NOT on the truck.

 

Here's what to look for:

Inspect the four edges of the mattress...specifically, the plastic that encases it.

When packed at the factory, there's a layer of plastic on top and bottom.

Those layers of plastic are heat sealed on all four sides of the mattress.

 

When a used mattress is returned to a plastic bag, one of those edges will be taped closed...not heat sealed.

That's what to look for. If you see one side taped closed, you know it's a used mattress...returned on comfort exchange.

 

 

 

 

We recommend using a waterproof mattress protector with every mattress.

Keeping the upholstery materials clean and dry will extend the life of the mattress.

Simmons Beautyrest Legend McFarland Mattress.

We need some guidance.  We need a new mattress.  

My husband, (65) and I, (61) prefer a firm mattress.  He is 6 ft tall and 200 lbs.  I’m 5”10 and 155 lbs.  

He sleeps primarily on his back and side, I sleep on my stomach and side.  

I also have had hip surgery and can now sleep on my left side for a little bit.  

My left bursae were removed and have not completely come back yet. 

We have tried out the Beautyrest Legend McFarland-a traditional mattress and the Beautyrest Katrice-memory foam.  

I liked the memory foam. Per the salesman at our local store, the Katrice has not been out that long, so there are not reviews on it.  

I also am hesitant about doing business with that store, due to their mediocre BBB ratings. 

I am open to other brands. We-previously had a Stearns and Foster years ago. 

I would appreciate some guidance. I don't want to wonder around from store to store, reading reviews, and still making a poor decision.  Any insight you can provide would be appreciated.

Based on your question and the way it’s worded, I’m guessing that you’re unaware that the mattress industry in this country has gone bad.

The memory foam, you said you liked, is responsible for the dramatic downturn in the overall quality.

 

All of the name brands have been sold to investors.

These investors are using memory foam to cause a mattress to need frequent replacing.

You can, no longer, trust these brand names to make a quality mattress.

Quality is no longer their focus.

Today, it’s all about selling more mattresses more frequently to the same people.

 

Normally, my customers find me after having been stung.

The truth is, you can’t do anything but make a mistake buying from most stores.

Their showrooms are a sea of mattresses upholstered with memory foam.

I'm familiar with the store that carries the Legend McFarland mattress. 

If buying that mattress, you’ll also have the privilege of over paying for a poor quality mattress.

 

It was only 15 years ago, when it was nearly impossible to buy a bad mattress.

Today, it’s equally impossible to buy a good one.

 

Memory foam is the absolute worst upholstery material ever invented...proving itself to be that over its 20 year history. 

Millions of dollars are spent to promote this cheaply made, poor quality foam.

It’s expensive because of the advertising dollars spent.

 

Memory foam is the only upholstery material that is temperature sensitive.

It softens as it warms from your body heat.

You sink into it easily. Since is has poor resiliency, you’re sinking through it within months of purchase.

It’s extremely deceptive, as you don’t experience any of this by trying a mattress in a showroom for a few minutes.

The diabolical part of memory foam is that it returns to its original shape when you get out of bed...so that you will never prevail in a warranty claim.

 

And, as if all this isn’t bad enough, memory foam is made of 61 different chemicals.

Some of those are highly toxic, like formaldehyde and benzene...just to name a few...

...adding injury to insult. The off gassing of these toxic chemicals attack your respiratory system.

Simmons Beautyrest Legend Luxury Firm Mattress.

Hi Pete,

My husband and I have been shopping for a new mattress and we're considering the Simmons Beautyrest Legend Luxury Firm.

We have a 5 year old Stearns and Foster pillowtop, right now, that started out great but is now sagging and too soft for both of us.

Last July, I herniated a disc (C7) and found sleeping on the Simmons Shakespeare Firm that we have in our guest room more comfortable. 

For months I could only sleep on my back and this provided me the most support and chance of rest. 

Now that I've healed, somewhat, I am able to sleep on my side and find that the Simmons Shakespeare Firm is too hard on my shoulder. 

So, I end up switching positions a lot. 

I have read a lot on your website, googled Simmons, and can't seem to find out much info on the Legend series. 

I was told by the salesperson that this line is the best Simmons makes. 

I believe it offers the best, in terms of stability when sharing a bed (partner doesn't feel it when the other moves). 

It feels firm, not particularly "comfy", like one gets with a plush or pillowtop. But, it's softer than the Shakespeare I have at home. 

What is your opinion of the Legend Series?  

I hesitate to get sucked into that because of what we've experienced with our Stearns and Foster. 

I worry about its longevity, especially considering that they're asking more than $4000.00 for it.

My husband is 6'3 235 lbs, I am 5'5, 125 lbs. 

He prefers a slightly softer mattress than I do, but clearly has more body mass so it seems like he could benefit from something firmer. 

He does not sleep well on our guest room bed, the Simmons Shakespeare Luxury Firm. It's too hard for him.

What do you recommend given our situation? We are looking for a king size bed.

The Legend is an exclusive for the store where you saw it.

As an exclusive, you can't shop it anywhere else. Hence, the outrageous price.

In fact, that retailer is one of the most expensive places to buy a mattress.

 

The Legend is NOT Simmons best. 

It is no more than a Platinum Series Beautyrest with a couple of extra bells and whistles that are nothing more than talking points. 

They do not make the mattress better or last longer. In fact, they add to early failure.

 

So, let's put all their BS aside and focus on what you need.

Based on your husband's size, you must start off with the Simmons Beautyrest Black Series.

The triple strand wire coils are the strongest that Simmons makes.

But, the memory foam upholstery is there to cause the mattress to wear prematurely.

To get around that, and add the surface softness you and your husband want, add a 2" Plush Talalay Latex Topper.

 

Latex is the best upholstery material on the planet, and has been for the last 100 years.

It will insulate you from the memory foam in the mattress, absorb your body weight, and cause the mattress to last far longer than the manufacturer intended. And, the latex toppers sleep cool...while the memory foam sleeps hot.

Exchanging a Mattress at one of those large chain stores.

I've appreciated reading all the info you've posted regarding the selection of a suitable mattress.  

My husband is 5'9", around 200 lbs., formerly (and attempting to be still) an athlete, very bulky shoulders, sleeps on his back.  

I'm 5'2" 125 lbs., 45 years old, I have had three children over the past 11 years.  

I'm dealing with pain on a regular basis, hard to really measure how much pain, not as bad as having children, but not something I can ignore. 

I use heat and ice packs on a regular basis.  The doctor doesn't seem to think there's anything clinically wrong with me.  

The chiropractor says I'm crooked from carrying children and need to exercise more. 

We don't need to get into all the sources of stress, just the fact that I could really benefit from a good night's sleep.

 

I've slept, for the past 16 years, on a Kingsdown Body System 2 flippable, very soft.  

A year and a half ago we moved to a new house with a larger bedroom, and thought it warranted a new king size bed.  

Thus began a rather painful search process.  

We started with a local store, believing the media hype about Memory Foam being best to alleviate back pain. I tried it and returned it.  

Next we went to the Sleep Number.  Tried it, and once again returned it.

 

Finally we thought we'd find another Kingsdown, for we were having great memories of good nights' sleep on that old Queen sized bed.  

We went to one of those large chain stores and they did have a very soft Kingsdown.

But, we were convinced of the relative merits of the Beautyrest Luxury Plush Pillowtop, and it was considerably less expensive.  

It felt good at first but after only 6 months. The pillowtop developed body impressions.  

It took the rest of the year, and then some, before they were beyond the 1.5 in depth needed for a warranty claim.  

We did reach that point, however, and were given a credit for a replacement with another product from them.

 

This past January we went in, intent on purchasing a Kingsdown, specifically the one with a latex top, for it's firmer support and durability.  

We didn't want another warranty failure.  We now have the Kingsdown and although my husband is feeling fine I'm miserable.  

I'm having pain and numbing in shoulders and hips.  I've gone back to the old Kingsdown in the guest room and it helps. 

But now, after trying so many new mattresses, I can clearly feel that the foam is worn in (although it's not pitted, interestingly enough).

 

At long last I've come upon your site and found so much useful information that I wish I'd found before.  

I have gone back to that store and they're willing to exchange again, but I'm not sure for what.  

I suppose I could just keep the current bed and add another topper, but it's already 15.5".  

I like the idea of getting the highest quality firm support, and a separate latex topper.  

They don't appear to carry a pure latex mattress for the support layer.  

The high end Beautyrest with the least cushion that they sells is the Legend.  

The one I think is their version of the Beautyrest Black is the Ultimate Plush Boxtop, but this has layers of memory foam.

I can more than imagine that this would break down over time.

 

What I'm concerned about is getting a soft enough topper.  

I've specifically chosen the Kingsdown for the firm support of the latex top, but it too has memory foam, which is causing me pain.  

Are you familiar with that mattress?  Could you make a recommendation for a latex topper?

Kingsdown isn't made as well as your 16 year old mattress. Very few mattresses are as good as they were back then.

Make no mistake, The Legend is nothing more than a Platinum Series Beautyrest with some extra window dressing. 

It is nowhere near the quality of the Black models and the people at that store have no qualms about lying to everyone about that.

 

I'm sorry you ended up there. I consider them to be, singularly, thee worst place to buy a mattress...for a number of reasons. 

Purposefully misrepresenting their products and their inflated prices are but 2 of those reasons.

I would suggest getting a Platinum Series Beautyrest in luxury firm...not the Legend...and without a pillowtop.

Add to that, a 2" Plush Talalay Latex mattress topper and you will be good to go....remaining like new for many years.

The firm, contouring support of a luxury firm Beautyrest will provide proper support and maintain the natural alignment of your spine.

The soft latex topper will relieve your pressure points, relax your muscles, and ease your blood flow.

Back Pain Relief, Simmons Beautyrest Gibson Grove and Latex Mattress Topper.

Hi Pete,

I am considering the Simmons Beautyrest Legend as an equivalent to the Simmons Beautyrest Black.  

They had the luxury firm pillowtop on display at the store. 

My husband weighs about 180 pounds, and I weigh about 145, and we both like to sleep on our side and on our backs. 

Any suggestions on which model of the Simmons Beautyrest Platinum you would recommend in our case? 

My husband doesn't like a mattress that is too soft, as he struggles with back pain.

Can you also tell me more about what the delivery process is like? 

(Would they set up mattress and haul away the old one, or just bring the mattress inside

That chain was purchased by Mattress Firm.

The "Legend" model had been a Sleepy's exclusive...and now is an exclusive to MF.

It's the "Exclusivity" that makes it so expensive....not being able to shop for it at any other store.

The Legend is, essentially, a Platinum Series Beautyrest, with a couple of extra bells and whistles that don't amount to much.

Simmons Beautyrest World Class Legend Mattress Extra Firm or Luxury Firm and do I need a Latex Topper?

I was going through the internet trying to buy a mattress when I stumbled on your website. 

I got a mattress in December last year and since then have had terrible backaches. 

I attributed it to stress until my husband, who lives out of town, slept on it for about 3 weeks and complained of backaches.

I visited a retailer and slept on their Beautyrest Legend King ($2800) and liked it. 

I went to another store and also liked their Beautyrest Recharge world class King ($1800). Both are the firm version without the pillow top. 

Upon getting home to do more research, I found that these products come in pillow top, plush, firm and extra firm. 

The thing is, I am not sure if what I liked was firm or extra firm. I also think that I can get these mattresses cheaper. I prefer the firm beds without the soft tops. 

Also, what should I look out for when buying? You recommended the latex topper. Will it make the mattress softer? Please advise. Thank you.

Things to look out for, are things like that Legend mattress.

It's an exclusive product for that store. It has a twist to the end of the coils and an extra 1/2" layer of padding over the World Class.

These small details don't amount to much, but since no other Beautyrest has it, they can over price it without fear that you'll find the same exact thing elsewhere.

Another thing to be aware of, is the memory foam in the mattress. It wears poorly and sleeps hot.

When we recommend a Beautyrest for every night adult use, we recommend the World Class with a latex topper.

The latex toppers are available in a variety of comfort levels. Usually, the mattress in luxury firm and the topper in soft.

The mattress provides the support and the topper provides the surface comfort.

The latex topper also insulates you from the memory foam...allowing you to sleep cool.

Latex is the most resilient upholstery material on the planet. It will absorb most or all of your body weight, causing the mattress to last a lot longer than it would on its own.

 

The Luxury Firm model is firm, but not as stiff as the extra firm.

When considering the curves of the female body and the pressure point that they create at the hip, the luxury firm is often the better choice.

You would choose the extra firm to support heavier weight, a back with serious disc problems, or a back and stomach sleeper where the pressure point at the hip is not an issue.

The latex topper softens only the top 2" of the mattress and does not negate the firm support that the mattress provides.
