Tempurpedic Mattress causing Hip, Neck, And Shoulder Pain.

We have had a Tempurpedic mattress for 3 years now. It was fine for 2 years. Now, it's causing me hip pain throughout the night as well as neck and shoulder pain. 

Also, I am going through menopause so I would like an option for a mattress topper that would not make me overly warm at night.

Hi Pam,

Only memory foam, like the foam in your mattress, is temperature sensitive.

Memory foam absorbs the heat your body emits, and then reflects that heat back to you.

It softens as it warms, allowing you to sink.

After a couple of years, you should be sinking through it and are now hitting the harder foam that supports it. Memory foam is the only thing that behaves in that manner.

Nothing else is temperature sensitive.

Hi Heather,

I don't know what it's called, exactly. It was a while ago that I saw it there.

It's a vinyl strap that goes around the two mattresses and cinches them tightly together.

It also has a "V" shaped piece of foam that you place along where the mattresses meet...to fill in that little gap between them.

If you give them this description, I'm sure they'll know what you want.

Hotel Mattress & Memory Foam

Both my husband and I are generally non discriminatory sleepers-back, front, side, but I am limited to my side when pregnant. We are 5'6" to 5'10", have athletic builds and are both under 200lbs. 
What do you suggest?

Hi Mairghread,

Memory foam consists of 61 different chemicals. Some of them are toxic and a couple of them are known carcinogens.

Besides being a health hazard, they don't work well. Memory foam is a temperature sensitive material that softens and sinks as it warms from the heat your body gives off.

From this repeated softening, it quickly loses its support. In a very short time, you'll sink through it as if it weren't even there. Besides being dangerous, it's worthless for the job you want it to do.

Since you have so much time before you need to buy, I suggest using a majority of that time in understanding about mattresses, what your body needs, what materials work and what materials don't work. You're already off to a very poor start. 

Having purchased memory foam, it's obvious to me that you are following the hype. Continue to do so, and you will make an expensive and painful mistake.

 There's little point in offering a recommendation until you have altered your mindset.

Pretty Bed Latex Foam Mattress.

Hi Brianne,

I can't help you with the specifics of the Pretty Bed mattress, other than remembering that it had a "plush" feel.

And, frankly, it doesn't matter when it comes to this. All-latex is extremely comfortable and extremely long lasting. 

Dunlop provides a dense, firmer base support and Talalay provides a softer, more supple surface feel. 

There are latex mattress that have one or the other or both. Which to choose will depend on your size.

For average to above average weight people, you can go with an all Talalay latex mattress. 

If you are much heavier than that, having a Dunlop latex core will support better over the long term.

Latex Mattress for a 340 lb. woman?‏

The mattress industry is designed to be confusing to the consumer. Keeping you off balance is how they sell so many crappy mattresses. Tempurpedic has a hard time holding up under average body weight. It won't last but a few months under the two of you. But. don't take my word for it. Read about how lousy a product it is for yourselves.

Latex is good, but not all latex is the same. The latex used by Stearns & Foster is Synthetic Latex...the least resilient of the latexes made today.

The most durable of the latex is Dunlop, but terribly comfy. Talalay latex is the most comfortable, but not durable enough on its own to support someone your size.

If you're going with all latex, I'd suggest a mattress that combines the softer surface feel of Talalay with the more dense Dunlop latex for support....like the ones shown here:

However, I'd rather see you in a very strong innerspring mattress with a latex topper.

What we most often recommend to hold your size is the Therapedic Medi-Coil Permatuft mattress...it was especially designed to hold extraordinary weight. Hi Sarah,
Trying a floor sample for a few minutes tells you very little. If the floor sample has any age to it, the new one being delivered will feel firmer, and not like the floor sample.
It's not like the old days, when the industry was making quality products. You could try a floor sample, get one that felt like that and have it stay that way a long time.
With today's mattresses losing their shape so quickly, having tried the floor sample has become a joke. It's now nothing more than a bad habit...creating a false sense of security.
Stick with me, kiddo, I won't steer you wrong.

Expect that leaving the topper unglued would make sense since it 

could easily be replaced if/when needed, but would this make a 

difference as to how this combo feels and would it slide around/make

the bed look messy? 
 
I’m a side sleeper and have usually done well with medium feel 

mattresses but have read that as we age we might need something

a bit softer to address pressure points that need more comfortable

support. Seems that any of the above would provide this but would

appreciate your advice as to what you think might do the best job 

given my circumstances.

Hi Andrea,

We have the 8" EverEden plush top, unglued, on a platform 

bed at home. Our guests love the way it sleeps. I do too, as 

this is my escape to mattress when necessary.

The "unglued" option is to keep the mattress 100% chemical 

free. The top layer does not shift. They are layers of 100% natural

rubber and they grip each other very well.

The queen was a bit heavy, but manageable. The twin will be 

considerably lighter in weight.

At your size, you can't go wrong with either choice. The Beautyrest

mattress and topper is less expensive, provides good support and 

comfort.

But, if you have the means, there's nothing else like the feel of an 

all latex mattress. The longevity of the all latex will make it the latex 

mattress you'll ever buy.

In the long run, it ends up being your most economical choice.

Hi Dawn,

Neither of these mattresses is a "Latex" mattress. They are Latex Hybrids. That is to say that each starts with a cheap poly foam base. The first is topped with Talalay latex, but they don't say how much. The second is topped with 3" of Dunlop latex.

If your mom is in good health and you expect that she might live another 10 years, neither mattress will last that long. The polyurethane base will lose it's shape...as it always does, and the latex will conform to the mis-shapen poly foam under it.

You'd be better off adding a couple of inches of all-natural Talalay Latex to a good, basic innerspring mattress....The Simmons Beautyrest Lumberton luxury firm.
