Sheets that Fit and Stay On a Thick Mattress as a Christmas Gift.

Hi Pete,

I've heard my mother-in-law complain about her sheets.

She says they don't fit and won't stay on, always popping off at night.

She has a newer mattress that she says is too thick.

She went out and bought new sheets, but that hasn't seemed to help.

I'd love to surprise her at Christmas, with a gift of a sheet set that does fit and won't pop off.

Do you have any idea of where I can get a set of sheets like that?

Your mother-in-law's problem seems to be a common one.

Sealy Optimum and Serta iComfort Mattresses Causing Night Sweats and Back Pain.

Dear Mattress Expert - in the past 15 months I have shelled out quite a bit of cash for mattresses that I am unable to sleep on.  

When my 10+ year old Simmons Beautyrest mattress started bothering pressure points when sleeping on my side, I decided it was time for something new.  

I fell in love with the Sealy Optimum model in the showroom I have to say that in terms of overall comfort, it's absolutely wonderful, for about 4 hours, after which time I wake up in a sweat .  

After trying an Outlast mattress pad, bamboo sheets, and lowering the AC, I had to concede defeat. So, I was back to the dreaded mattress shopping experience.  

In talking with salesman in store #2, I explained my apparent "hot sleeping" problem, I asked what he would recommend that would be close in comfort to the Optimum bed, 

but without the heat transfer issue.  Based on his recommendation, I purchased a Serta iComfort with cooling gel.  

Not only am I, once again, waking up in a sweat, but now I am also waking up with lower back pain.  

PLEASE point me in the direction of a mattress that will provide the feel of the Sealy Optimum model but without making me sweat.  

I never had this problem with  my innerspring mattress, but now I am worried that I will NEVER find the right mattress for me.  

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE HELP!!!!

Hi Donna,

It's not as difficult as it sounds. It's a matter of avoiding the problem materials and the salespeople pushing them.

These last two mattresses, you bought, are made of memory foam. THIS is your problem material and the thing to avoid.

As you noticed, the cooling gel doesn't work well or for very long. And, the memory foam, itself, is of such low quality as to cause your back to hurt.

The key to a successful purchase is a mattress made of high quality components.

What I recommend is a pocketed coil that is upholstered with latex.

The pocketed coil unit is like your old Simmons Beautyrest...the latex upholstery is far more resilient than memory foam...and sleeps cool.
