Natura Greenspring Ultra Plush to Replace a Stearns and Foster Blisswood Mattress?

Brett writes:

Hello Peter,
I am following up on an old email regarding my interest in moving from my old S&F Blisswood to a new mattress.
I really enjoy my firm Stearns and Foster Blisswood with latex topper...as you had recommended.
We've had it for many years and it's still in good condition. However, it's a queen and we want a king size.
Do you still recommend the Natura Greenspring Ultra Plush without a latex topper as my replacement?
I am ready to purchase and looking for your best recommendation.
Many Thanks, Brett

Hi Brett,

Stearns and Foster April Rose Mattress.

Shannon writes:

Hi Pete,
I just read your 2015 post regarding the Stearns and Foster April Rose.
I loved S&F prior to the purchase of this bed.
Not only did the foam lose its support and integrity, you are absolutely correct about the foam.
"The memory foam will return when you get off of the mattress, leaving you with a mattress that has lost its
support & comfort and won't show a sustained impression deep enough to prevail in a warranty claim..."
Since defects are measured by the depth of the impression, S&F is the winner and consumers is out $$$.  Shame on them!
Regards, Shannon

Hi Shannon,
I'm sorry that you had to learn that the hard way.
S&F was purchased by Sealy, decades ago, as their "High End" line...
...an alternative to their more reasonably priced Posturepedic line.

Their quality took a nose dive when Tempurpedic bought them, both, in 2013.
All of the name brands have been sold to investors.
Memory foam is what they use to cause a mattress to need frequent replacing.
And, it's the memory foam that makes their warranties worthless.

S&F isn't the only brand that went bad.
When buying a mattress, today, the key to a successful purchase is in avoiding memory foam.

Here's a link to mattresses with the same high quality S&F once had.

A Stearns and Foster Worth Avenue Mattress from 2007.

Marc writes:

Hello Pete,
We have a Stearns and Foster Worth Avenue mattress from 2007, and are feeling it's nearing time for a replacement.
We don't have to hit Christmas sale prices, and are thinking more of a late springtime or early summer purchase.
We have loved the firmness and support of this over the years, and would love basically the same thing again.
Any specific recommendations?
Last time I think we spent approximately $1500, and we'd be in the same range now.
Thanks, Marc

Hi Marc,
Much has changed over the years since you last bought a mattress.
6 years later, Sealy and S&F were sold to Tempurpedic.
Everything they make, today, is loaded with memory foam.
There is no memory foam in the mattress you have, which is why yours performed so well for so long.
You’d be lucky to get a couple of years of comfortable sleep from one made today.
Sealy, too.
Serta and Simmons were purchased by an investment group.
All of today’s name brands are upholstered with memory foam for the sole purpose of selling more mattresses more frequently to the same people...and maximizing profits.

It’s a pity, really. S&F had been considered “The Cadillac of the Industry” for many decades. Now, its nothing more than expensive junk.
For someone like yourself, essentially stepping out of a time warp, it’s an expensive and painful experience....simply going to a store to buy a new mattress.

In short, there is no replacement for the one you have.
What you thought would be easy, becomes a matter of starting from scratch.
And, you have one goal...avoiding memory foam.

What I’ve shared with you is in stark contrast to the ads and sales pitches you’ll encounter. Memory foam is sold as the best thing since sliced bread.
It’s all lies. Memory foam is not only a lousy product, most of it is also a health hazard...off gassing the toxic chemicals from which it’s made.

There is no one policing this industry.
It’s a good thing you have time to research.
Write back to me when you’re ready to buy, and I’ll offer you a recommendation.
Things change regularly, in this industry.
A recommendation made today, may not be available in the spring or summer.

Thanks, Pete

Yikes! Sounds dire..
I will write when we have more saved up.
Just for a small piece of advice for a savings goal, if we wanted to aim for the same quality or materials, approximately how much should we expect to save?
Thanks, Marc

Hi Marc,
We had been a Sealy/S&F retailer, exclusively, for many years.
When Tempurpedic bought them in 2013, I knew what would happen...so we dropped both lines.
We then went shopping at the trade show...every 6 mos. for 4 years.
It wasn’t easy finding high quality alternatives.
So, after years of home testing a variety of options, the Natura of Canada Greenspring is the line of mattresses that’s the best.
We’ve had ours for more than 3 years now.
My wife and I are heavy...about 225 lbs. each.
I have lots of disc related back problems.
The mattress shows no signs of wear.
I live without pain.
There are 4 models in their line. The Ultra Plush model is the one we have at home.

Stearns and Foster Double Sided Pillowtop Mattress.

John writes:

Hello Pete,
Can you help me?
We have a Stearns and Foster double sided pillowtop medium firm queen mattress.
We know they no longer are in existence, sorry to say, as it is a great mattress.
We have another bedroom that we want to fit with this same mattress.
Can you tell us where and who might be making a similar mattress today?
Thank you, John

Hi John,
The last of the great Stearns and Foster mattresses.
I had one. The Knightsbridge, was the model name.

I can help you. I can save you from wasting your time.
Nothing like that exists.

Thanks, Pete

Hi Pete,
That was not the answer I wanted to hear, but thank you for your help in saving my time.
Is there anything near a second best or what would you say is the best available today.

We have a Simmons Beautyrest in that room now, the one that they claim you can drop a bowling ball on and not spill a glass of water, LOL.
That was not why we bought it, but we did not expect the comfort level to drop as fast as it has. A sag developed.
It was a firm, which we really didn't want, but felt the firmer model would be stronger, so it would hold up longer....WRONG.

Thank you in advance for any help you can give.
John

Good Morning John,

You have stepped out of, what can only be described as, a time warp.

That old S&F mattress was made at a time when manufacturers competed with one another to make a quality product.

Those days no longer exists...and haven't for quite some time.

Your old S&F mattress was one of the last great mattresses made by "The Cadillac of the Industry".

Today, S&F is nothing more than expensive junk.

S&F is not alone in this. All of the name brands have been sold...Sealy and S&F were purchased by Tempurpedic in 1013.

Simmons and Serta were bought by the same investment group.

All have loaded their mattresses with memory foam.

Memory foam is used for the express purpose of causing a mattress to need frequent replacing.

Despite all the hype to the contrary, memory foam is thee worst upholstery material ever invented.

Besides being a lousy product in terms of performance, it's also a health hazard...off gassing the toxic chemicals from which it's made.

(Adding injury to insult).

Your mistake was in assuming that a new mattress would be as good as your old one.

We used to be a Sealy/S&F retailer...exclusively. We dropped both lines when Tempurpedic bought them and turned them into junk mattresses.

We spent a good amount of time and effort at the trade shows, looking for high quality alternatives.

Over the years, we home tested a number of different mattresses...with varying results.

The one we have now, we like very much. It's 3 years old, now, and still like new....with each of us in the 225 lb. range.

I have lots of disc related back problems and my wife commonly suffers with hip pain.

For these last three years, our pains have been relieved, thanks to this mattress....The Natura of Canada Greenspring Ultra Plush.

There are 4 choices of comfort in that line, with the ultra plush model providing the greatest degree of surface comfort.

All 4 provide the same excellent, firm support.

Here is a link to that line of mattresses:

Natura Greenspring to Replace Your Failing Serta Mattress.

Hi Pete,
I should have listened to you 4+ years ago. I was between 2 Sealy all foam mattresses. I selected the thicker one and you cautioned against that. You were right. The mattress failed.
I am now ready to return to an innerspring mattress. I am 57 and generally a side sleeper, about 5'11", 177 lbs and stay in shape.
I first went to Bloomingdales and liked the Stearns and Foster when I saw it the first time.
I went back a few weeks later and it seemed too firm and I didn't like it as much.
I went to a large chain retailer and after going through the S&F Estate mattresses, some of which felt fine on my side, made me feel I was sinking too much when I went to my back.
I then came to a S&F basic model. I have read on your blog your recommendation of a basic S&F model in luxury firm with a 2" Latex topper for heavy-set folks.
So, for my height and weight, do you have any recommendations?
Thanks very much, James

Hi James,
That was an older post, you read. Much has changed in the past few years. Since our last go-round, Tempurpedic has acquired both, Sealy and S&F, and loaded both lines with memory foam.
Another frequent recommendation was a Simmons Beautyrest World Class in luxury Firm with a 2" Soft latex topper. The Wold Class has since been discontinued.
All of the name brands have substituted quality for frequent sales. In short, they have all betrayed the trust they spent decades building with the consumer.
A corporate greed mindset has a grip on all those brands. The mattresses they produce require frequent replacing due to all the memory foam they use.
Over the last few years, we've been promoting a Canadian company, "Natura". They make a number of products, but their "Greenspring" line is what I recommend.
The Greenspring models use a twice tempered individually pocketed coil system...stronger and with a higher coil count than any of the major brands.
More importantly, the upholstery they use is natural Talalay Latex, and the contain NO Memory Foam.
My wife and I, both 50 lbs. heavier than you, have had one of these mattresses in our master bedroom for the past year. It shows zero signs of wear.
It carries a 20 year warranty, and is likely to exceed that mark, while the name brands don't come close to lasting as long as their warranties..
Of the 5 models in the line, the Liberty Plush Eurotop is the most comfortable.
The Liberty Ultra Plush model produces that in between feel...not too firm and not too soft...a feel that so many people prefer.
In short...it's a long lasting, well supportive, comfortable mattress...all due to high quality of the components used.
The purchase of a separate latex topper is not needed for longevity...as it would be with many of today's mattress that use memory foam.

A Soft Latex Topper for a S&F Mattress that is Too Firm.

Elaine writes:

Hi Pete,

My husband and I bought a S&F Luxury Firm mattress 2 years ago.
The long story short, had a warranty issue and it was replaced with an ultra firm model, 2 weeks ago.

I am finding it much firmer, not plush enough and hips ache. I am interested in a really good mattress topper for it.

Can you point me in the right direction?  I am trying to stay away from memory foam.
Thank you:), Elaine

Two Sided Stearns and Foster Blakely mattress replacement.

Hi Pete,
I bought a Stearns and Foster Blakely mattress in 2003. Two years ago I bought a new replacement from another mfg due to Stearns and Foster was out of my price range. This mattress is sagging where I sleep on it.
What mattress would be similar to the Blakely since I don't think they make it anymore. It is a two sided and can be flipped, no pillow top.?
Thanks for your help.
Eileen

Hi Eileen,

Stearns & Foster hasn't made a two sided mattress in more than 10 years. And, since Tempurpedic bought them, it's been more than a year since they've made a mattress I could recommend to anyone.
5 years ago, we had made for us, two sided mattress that are similar in construction and quality to your old S&F mattress.
Here is a link to those. Delivery is free and there's no sales tax.

Replacing a 15 year old Stearns & Foster Hampton King mattress.

Dear Pete,
My wife and I are thinking we may need a new mattress. Currently we have a 15 year old Stearns & Foster Hampton King which has served us well. It shows no sag or visible signs of wear. Only issue is that sometimes my movement in bed disturbs my wife. Recently she has been experiencing back & shoulder pain which was relieved when she slept on another bed while on a recent trip. She is 57 years old, 5’ 2” tall, 130 lbs. and a side sleeper. I am 59 years old, 5’ 10” tall, 180 lbs. with occasional lower back and upper neck issues adequately managed with regular visits to the chiropractor. I sleep mostly on my side as I snore too much when sleeping on my back. Both of us toss & turn frequently through the night.

Today we went mattress shopping (Nebraska Furniture Mart in KC, KS). My wife was most impressed with a Serta King Prodigy Everfeel. I found an Omaha Bedding King Warren Firm foam mattress that had a 1” latex top layer to be as comfortable at a considerable lower cost. They did not have all latex mattresses for us to try. My wife is more pressure point sensitive than I and we would like a bed that could help alleviate her back/shoulder pain. We do like the adjustable base as it appears to provide more comfort when watching TV in bed, which we do often.

We’ve been impressed reading about latex mattresses and/or mattresses that utilize latex. We have concerns about the long term effectiveness, durability & safety of memory foam, especially when considering the high costs. In addition, we worry that memory foam will be too warm. It is difficult to judge how any bed will perform night after night based on a few minutes “test” in a store environment or by reading on-line reviews. Our priorities are having a quality, cost effective mattress that provides healthy, long term comfort & support.

Questions are: Should we consider getting just the topper for the time-being or is our mattress past its life expectancy? If we get a topper, would our current bed linens still fit? If a new mattress is purchased, which ones would you recommend for us? Which mattresses help minimize adjoining movement? Is getting an adjustable base a bad idea? Are there mattresses better suited for an adjustable base? Based on reading your blog, you often recommend getting a Beautyrest Luxury Firm w/a 2” Talalay latex topper. What is the difference between the Firm, Luxury firm & Ultimate Firm models? Would a Therapedic one or two sided mattress be a better choice? Which of the latex mattresses would you currently recommend as a good value? Do any of the mattresses you recommend require box springs? Any other factors we should consider?
Thank you in advance for your assistance. Michael

Hi Michael,
What you have, the H grade Plush S&F, was one of the last great mattresses made. I truly miss those days. It was a legitimate business back then.
20 years ago, memory foam was just being introduced...mainly on the home shopping shows.
I remember the very first time I saw the TV commercial for it...where they press a hand into the foam, hold it there for a couple of seconds, then remove the hand.
The result was a hand print that remained in the foam. I remember thinking, "Who, in their right mind, is going to thing that's a good idea?!".

Memory foam is made from a chemical soup, with some of those chemicals being toxic and carcinogenic. The bad smell it has when it's delivered is the off gassing of those harmful chemicals.
Complaints range from sinus headache to bleeding sinuses, as a result of the off-gassing. Fact is, it's bad for your health and the health of every living being in your home.
Recent developments have seen produced, by some, a plant based, all natural memory foam. That solved that problem.
I didn't know about the chemical make up when I first saw it advertised. The health factor is a good reason to avoid memory foam, but, its not the only reason.
What I saw on the commercials, is a foam with zero support.
Support is the part of the mattress that pushes against you...the part that holds you up.
The support system in your mattress had been the work horse of the industry since first introduced in the 1920s...and used by every innerspring mattress manufacturer, until the early 80s, when the industry started seeing some significant changes....mostly about marketing, looking for greater market share.
It was at this time that Serta introduced their continuous coil system. It wasn't nearly as strong as the coil system in your mattress, The Bonnell Coil, but that didn't stop them from advertising that it being better. From that day to this, Serta makes a third rate product....in my humble opinion. They rank highly by Consumer Reports...who, a couple of years ago, published a mattress issue, where the stated honestly, "The mattress industry is far too complex for us to understand", and offered no recommendations.

Which brings us back to memory foam.
Memory foam, plant based or chemical filled, is a temperature sensitive material. Polyurethane foam, the parent of memory foam, is not. It, like all natural latex foam rubber, are pressure sensitive materials. Also introduced in the 1920s, Latex Foam Rubber has been thee most comfortable and most durable upholstery material on the planet from then to this day.
But, I'll get to the virtues of latex foam, later in this response.
When you lay on memory foam in the showroom, it's a love it or hate it experience. If you are among the lucky ones to hate it right off, congratulations, you've dodged a bullet.
The "Love It" people are seduced by a deceiver. It feels the way you love it when it's new. If you are young and fit and without physical damage, you could continue to enjoy it for several years...
...if you've gotten past the initial odor...and don't mind sleeping a little warm.
If you happen to be more like the majority of people in this country....NOT young and fit and without physical damage...well, there's just no other way to put it, "You're screwed".
That nice new feel is gone before you can say, "What the hell just happened and where did my $3000 go?!"
This temperature sensitive material softens as it warms from the body heat you give off. The pressure from the weight of your body presses into it and you sink....the heaviest parts of your body first.
At first, it held you up some. After a matter of months, you'll feel that support go away. Now, your sleeping with your spine out of its proper alignment and,"BINGO", all your physical aliments come back...and worse than before. And, I dare say, if you have no problems and sleep on memory foam long enough, it will give you problems.
Let's not forget that it is a temperature sensitive product. Since memory foam hit the streets, the major complaint was that it slept hot. It absorbs your body heat and the pressure from your body squeezes that heat back out to you, as you sink in.

As you shop, you'll note that memory foam is now made with a cooling gel...either mixed in, or as an outer layer. This is the same gel that's used in Dr. Scholl's Insoles, that you see sold in pharmacies. It works to keep you cool. It would nice if it worked for a full 8 hours. Well, it doesn't. How quickly it takes for it to become saturated by the warmth around it, will depend on how hot of a sleeper you are. People can be very different in this regard. In their later years, my mom and dad had separate bedrooms. One slept hot and one slept cold.
A cold sleeper would have little affect on the gel, and possibly get through an entire night. . A hot sleeper can knock out the benefits of that gel in a couple/few hours...then it's back in the oven.

It's very easy to spend thousands of dollars on a memory foam mattress.
Memory foam is not an expensively made product. It's actually pretty cheap to make. The expense is to cover the enormous advertising budget.
Soon after your mattress was made, the rest of the mattress industry started to take notice of the market share they were losing to this newcomer.
What they were learning from the market share they lost was, you don't have to make a high quality product. In fact, if you make a low quality product, and spend more in advertising where you continually tell people how great it is, you'll sell more mattresses more frequently to the same people...rather than the old way of making a quality product where you take that customer out of the market for the next 10, 15 or 20 years. Now, that customer is back every 5 years, on average, with many people seeing only a year or two.
In an economy where the rich are getting richer and the poor are getting poorer and the middle class is disappearing, I find it unconscionable to take the path of corporate greed and take advantage of people in this way.
So now, mattresses are one-sided and not flippable...and, for the most part, are using a lot of memory foam.
S&F used to be among my favorite mattresses to recommend. There were models that I could turn to with no memory foam in them. Some, even had latex.
But, all good things come to an end. In 2013, Tempurpedic purchased the Sealy/S&F company...and in January of 2014, the new S&F line was introduced...using lots of memory foam in each and every model.

As bad as memory foam is, that's not all of it.
When you have a memory foam mattress or an innerspring with a lot of memory foam in it...like the S&F and Consumer Reports fav...the Serta iSeries & iComfort....and know that your mattress has failed....you're sinking in too far which is causing a myriad of aches and pains...you're just screwed. You call your retailer to register your complaint. They send someone out to measure the sustained impression in your mattress.
Here comes the diabolical part. When you get out of that crater you've been sleeping in, slowly the memory foam begins to recover. And before long, it's back to its original shape...or close enough to it that a sustained impression of an inch and a half is not measurable, (the industry standard since forever.....needed to obtain authorization to exchange).

You should hear them in Linked-In and everywhere you go among the retailers and manufacturers. Memory foam is the cause of an industry boon, that has never been seen at anytime in the past. They are selling more and more mattresses to the same people, and without having to exchange them as the did in the past.
And now, a generation has past since memory foam was introduced. Many of today's younger buyers will never experience the kind of quality that you have with your old S&F.
They will accept this as the way of it without complaint. And as time goes by, those who remember what a quality mattress was, will die off.
The mattress industry used to make mattress that were solely pressure sensitive...and not temperature sensitive. They had machines that they made to test mattresses and would use these machines to simulate 15 years of use....back when they cared about quality.
Consumer Reports acquired these machines and are using them to test today's mattresses.
However, today's mattresses are also temperature sensitive. CR's admitted lack of knowledge, allows them to be fooled by the results they're getting from the antiquated machines they're using to test them. But, memory foam will perform well, if you don't heat it. THIS, is why such crappy mattresses are rating so highly with Consumer Reports.

Latex foam rubber IS expensively made...starting with the sap from the rubber trees that grow in more tropical climates.
It has been the best you can buy all this time. It does absolutely everything that memory foam claims it will do....do them better, and much longer....and, with none of the negative side effects that memory foam produces. While just as expensive as some memory foam mattresses, it's much less expensive to use....given the many years that they last.
Latex is also available in thinner sheets than as a whole mattress. So, for hundreds instead of thousands, you can add a 2" latex topper to a reasonably firm innerspring mattress and get everything your body requires for a good night's sleep...and, at a reasonable price.

A latex topper will insulate you from the underlying mattress. It will soften the surface without sacrificing the underlying firm support. You don't sink through it, just into it a little. It holds you up. You feel suspended by it. Zero Gravity is a good way to describe the unique feel of latex foam. As you move, it moves with you...with no climbing out of a hole. Latex foam sleeps much cooler than any other type of foam. Latex is more resilient than any other type of foam. It is so resilient as to absorb your body weight, leaving much less work for the mattress and extending the life of that mattress far beyond what the manufacturer was hoping for.

All that said, Michael. And, I suppose I could have just said so...but, your particular question provoked a rant in me.
Add a 2" soft All-Natural Talalay Latex Foam Mattress Topper to what you have, while you figure out what you want to do.
It will not be a wasted purchase. You'll need it to top the mattress you do end up buying.

Stearns and Foster Shantel Mattress & Latex Foam Topper.

Hal writes:

Hi,

I am considering the Stearns and Foster Shantel mattress.  I have read your advice about using a 2 inch soft latex foam topper to protect the mattress.

Would this still be advisable for the Shantel or would that add to much cushion to a mattress that already has plenty of foam?

Do they make one inch toppers?

Thanks, Hal

Hi Hal,
The Shantel has an inch of memory foam in it and loses its shape quickly. It is S&F's most problematic model.
A latex foam topper will retard its premature wear.
But instead of relying on a latex foam topper to fix a bad mattress, it should be used to soften a good mattress.
The next level up the line doesn't have memory foam and would be a much better choice of mattress.
That store has it as the Michaela and we have it as the Twila.
The latex toppers come 1.5", 2" and 3". We find the 2" does the optimum job of providing surface comfort and extra longevity to the mattress.

A Latex foam mattress topper for my new and old bed.

Shirley writes:

Hello, I hope someone is still minding this email as I am in need of some help.  We have just purchased a new mattress and are trying to decide if it is the one for us before our trial time is up.  In 2002 we bought a Stearns & Foster Chesterbury and we have loved it.  But recently I have been having a lot of pain in my hip & leg while sleeping.  I am a side sleeper and so is my husband.  I have gained some weight and I now weigh about 200lbs, and my husband weighs about 180 and he also is a side sleeper & he snores!  Anyway, the person at the mattress store that we purchase our mattress said we needed a firmer mattress, he had a computer type thing that we answered questions and we laid on the bed and it popped out a print out and told us what bed we needed.  He showed us several which was supposed to be in our comfort level and we finally decided on one.  We got the Simmons beauty rest Black “Evie”.  It is call a luxury firm.  It has a pillow top and is a tall mattress.  Anyway, it felt good at store, soft, but not as good as some of the plush beds I tried, which the sales person said was not for me if I was having problems and I needed the extra support because of our weight.  But after getting it home, I think it feels soft when I first lay down, but then it gets hard.  And I still have the pain in my hip and leg and I am tossing and turning all night, and wake up sore.  They say I need to give it 30 days and it will soften, but I’m not sure. Plus I have been reading the bad reviews on Simmons mattress and the poor customer service, and everyone is having problems with the beds sagging after just a few months, I don’t want to go through this, I just want a good mattress that doesn’t cause me pain while I sleep.  I feel I need a softer mattress.  I want a bed that when I come home and lay in it I love it, and that’s the the way it was with my old S&F Chesterbury.  And it still feels that way when I lay on it, but during the night and in the morning I wake up sore, just think it’s too old.  Can you tell me if there is a S&F comparable to that one?
Thanks for your help.  Sorry this is so long.
Sincerely,
Shirley

Hello Shirley,
The time to research is before you buy.
A pillowtop model is a poor choice for heavy people. The foams in the pillowtop will compress quickly, losing much of its initial comfort within months.
The Ava would have been a better choice...adding to it a 2" layer of soft Talalay latex foam for surface comfort that lasts for years.
In fact, that latex mattress topper is likely to have been all you needed, added to your Chesterbury.
The quality of your old mattress was very high. The padding may have compressed, but the coil unit is still providing adequate support. All it needed was the latex topper to restore the surface comfort.
Simmons' poor reviews stem from all the "plush" Beautyrests that are sold. The plush models are so consistently a problem, we don't even list them on our website.
You bought a firm. Except for the usual problems with pillowtops, your firm Beautyrest will hold up well.
Here's a link to the latex foam toppers.
