Sealy TrueForm memory foam mattress needs a latex topper.

Terri writes: 1326996619-136579_full

Hi Pete,
I have a several year old Sealy TrueForm memory foam mattress that was comfortable for a while, after my back surgery, but now I have back and hip pain every morning.
Can I just buy a topper or do I need to just replace the mattress?
Thanks, Terri

Hi Terri,
What happened to your mattress is what typically happens with memory foam, it loses it's support, comfort and resiliency much too quickly.
Your mattress has memory foam on top, supported by much firmer poly foam.
Flip the mattress over, add a 2" soft layer of Talalay Latex, and you'll be good to go for support and surface comfort for a number of years more.
Here is the link to the latex toppers. Either EverEden or Pure Bliss work equally well.

Sealy True Form Crystal Sea Mattress

Victor of Durango, writes:
Hello, My wife and I just purchased a King Size bed wanting to upgrade from an older Queen mattress in which we put a memory foam topper on.  I slept well in the old bed except for when a crater developed rolling us into eachother, causing shoulder pain.  Having opted for a larger bed we went and tried latex and memory foam options and decided on the Sealy Crystal Sea, which by the way omits a strange odor.  Anyhow, we have had this mattress set for 3-nights now and I have not slept a wink, my wife loves it.  In addition, I feel lower back pain when I wake.  Will this change>? Can this change? My wife seems to think I should sleep on it a couple of weeks and that I might get used to it.  It seems firmer than I am used to and I ahavent been able to sleep in it so far at all. Any input appreciated.

Hi Victor,
What you have isn't really a latex mattress. It's a poly foam mattress with  a little latex in it. It's the poly foam that's giving off that odor....which will go away.
Your wife is right about giving it some time. However, if the issue is that it's not soft enough, you can put a topper on it for that.
The best of the toppers is latex. A soft 2" latex topper makes for a very comfortable sleeping surface.

Sealy Trueform Gracehill Harbour Mattress

Julia of Albuquerque, writes:
My husband is 6'4", 250lbs and a side, sometimes back sleeper. I am 5'8" 140 with moderate scoliosis and also a side sleeper. We purchased a sealy trueform gracehill harbour two weeks ago (returnable). He LOVES this mattress as he now can sleep with no pain on his hip and shoulders. I wake up with awful neck, hip AND back pain every morning since we've had this new mattress. Should we look at a sealy spring free, a s&f, or a sealy reserve with some kind of topper? Your input is appreciated!!

Julia. While better in lots of ways, latex provides contouring support...like the memory foam. Individually pocketed coils do also. Your neck problems are better addressed with the right pillow...which, unfortunately, an ordeal of trial and error.
The Posturepedic Reserve with a soft latex topper will provide a soft, comfortable surface feel, butmaintain the firmer underlying support needed for most with scoliosis.

Sealy Gracehill Harbor mattress

Shane of Glasgow, KY, writes:
I am 5'11" male who is having a lot of lower back pain of my old mattress.  I am a side sleeper who turns a lot of in my sleep, and I am having a hard time finding the right mattress for me.  I like the Gracehill Harbor, but i'm not sure if i'll get enough support.  I am also a big fan of the Sealy Spring Free Latex mattresses.  Thanks for the help!

Hi Shane. The Gracehill is a memory foam mattress. So, if you're looking for the contouring support of foam and the relief of pressure points that come with it, latex is the better of the two types. It's what we all sleep on at home. The Beachside model, in particular, is the 1st one to try. For sooo many, it's all you need for a good night's sleep.

WE DELIVER EVERYWHERE in the Continental US.

Sealy Trueform Floor Model Mattress

pat of greenville, writes:
I'm afraid I learned a very expensive lesson in purchasing the right mattress. Decided to try the memory foam. Purchased a floor model Sealy true form Euro plush top. We were told it was over a 3,000 dollar mattress(and after researching that was correct) and paid 2100. Of course we can't return it. I need to remedy this problem as I have tried sleeping on it for a week now and basically haven't slept a wink. It is so comfortable initially(which is what sold me in the store), but 2 hours later I'm feeling pressure in upper back, lower back and legs. Both my husband and I are tall, but not heavy people. I thought about removing the pillow top foam which would basically void any warranty or flipping it over. But because of how the foam is layered in the true form, I don't know if that would work. I saw another person's blog about a latex topper firming up a too soft mattress. What idl would you recommend and what thickness to do any good. Desperate for any answers!

Hi Pat. That's only one of the many problems with memory foam...it doesn't feel at home, as it does in the store. BTW, having bought a floor sample, you don't have a factory warranty. Before you spend any more money, flip the mattress over and try sleeping on the underside. I believe you will find that to be more comfortable to start with....and after a few days/a week, then decide about how the topper needs to be...(softer/firmer)

Sealy Trueform mattress

Julie of Warner Robins, writes:
Hi! My husband and I just purchased a Sealy Trueform mattress and I also got a Tempurpedic pillow. When I opened the pillow, I saw the sticker saying that it may have some odor that will dissipate over time - the smell almost knocked me down, it was so strong. I have had to put the pillow on the other side of the house to air out. Since the mattress was a different brand, I was hoping it wouldn't have such an odor. I smelled it a little bit when we opened it up, but not so much after it was in the room. I slept on it for 2 nights before my throat started getting scratchy. I then got laryngitis and have developed a really bad cough. I can only assume that this came from the chemicals in the mattress, since I was feeling just fine before it's arrival. I am now sleeping in my son's room. Do you know, typically, how long it takes for the chemical smell to go away? We have a 30 day return policy and may have to return it, since I can't sleep on it. I did not notice any odor on the test pillow or the test mattress at the showroom, so it seems like at some point the smell will dissappear.
Also, if we have to return the mattress, can you recommend another Sealy mattress (as the store only sells Sealy and Tempurpedic)? My husband is about 320 lbs. and I am about 135 lbs. He likes a firmer mattress and is a stomach/side sleeper, I like a firmer base, but more cushiony on top, so that it conforms to my curves when I sleep on my side/stomach. We both have lower back problems (herniated disk and bulging disk), so we were hoping that a new mattress might help with support. Sorry to be so long-winded. I appreciate any help that you can give us - we are in a time crunch to decide what to do! Thanks so much! Julie

Hi Julie. Odor aside, you have the wrong mattress for your needs. In the past 1/4 century, I can't think of anything that has drawn such negative reactions as memory foam. It doesn't matter what brand and Sealy's isn't any better than anyone elses. A person with any sense of reason has to conclude that so many negative physical reactions can only mean that the product is unhealthy...not to mention doing a lousy job of what its meant to do.
Memory foam is a temperature sensitive material. As your body's heat warms the foam, it softens, then recovers slowly. Day by day, the time it takes to soften grows shorter and the depth to which is sinks becomes greater. A 320 pound man will compress it into nothingness in a matter of months.
The mattress that has the greatest chance of survival, with enough cushioning to be comfortable for you, is the Sealy SpringFree Beachside. I would prefer to see a man that big on the Weybridge, but I'm afraid you would find it too firm. The Sealy latex has nearly no odor and zero negative health effects have been reported.

Sealy Trueform 10 memory foam mattress

Catherine of Louisville, writes:
My husband and I bought a Sealy Trueform 10 memory mattress and after the requisite 60 days, are finding it just too soft, though we have liked memory foams we have slept on before. I especially have many joint/muscle pains--torn knee cartiledge, arthritic shoulder, etc, and have come to dread sinking into this very soft mattress--and that's with my bedroom cold in winter! Now we are locked into a trade (no returns available) and are considering either a Tempurpedic advantage or a Stearns and Foster Oasis latex. The latter is something new to us and it costs more, but now I am afraid of another memory-foam. Do you think I could adjust to the advantage or is the latex a safer bet...or do you have other suggestions? Thank you so much.

Hi Catherine. The problem with memory foam is that it loses resiliency rather quickly. Even though it eventually returns to its original shape, when you get on it now, it compresses too easily. Latex is much more resilient and much longer lasting. It's worth the difference.

Sealy 11" True form memory foam mattress

My wife and I have had an 11 inch Sealy TruFoam for almost 2 years now and we fight with the sheets every day. Its the material that the matress case is made of. It has a grain or direction. Its smooth one way and rough the other. SO the sheet slips up but pull back up when pushed down. We have tried everything. The longest we have gotten without the sheets coming off it about a week.

It sounds like you're not using a mattress pad. The purpose of a mattress pad is to protect the mattress from stains. A stained mattress voids the warranty of any mattress. besides offering that protection, it would also solve your problem.

Thanks, Pete

Sealy memory foam mattress

chuck of salina, writes:
We bought a memory foam model from Sealy about 2 years ago and it has not been nearly as comfortable as we had hoped.  We had previously owned a Simmons extra firm with pillow top which we initially liked but over time I started to develop pains around the hip and later the shoulders.  We had several friends that bought the memory foam mattresses (mostly Tempur-Pedic).  I thought this would bring some relief from the pains at pressure points.  Boy, was I wrong.  My wife is also starting to experience the same problems.  We have tried putting a down cover over to soften the contact but this was not effective either.  If anything, the aches and pains are worse now than with the Beautyrest.  I rarely get as much as 2 hours of sleep before the pain wakes me up and I have to change positions.  By the time I get out of bed in the morning, I feel as if I have been beaten.  I actually get a better night's rest on a hotel mattress. I'm sure some of this is my age (60). Also I've lost!  quite a bit of weight in the last 6 months (215 to 168) which you think would reduce pressure due to the lower weight.  Not the case.  It has actually gotten worse -- less padding I guess. Did I make a mistake in not buying the Tempu-Pedic brand or is this a generic problem with memory foam type products?  I thought about trying an air mattress net but have not read too much positive about them.  I just need to get some rest.  Any suggestions?  Thanks

Hi Chuck. Flip it over and sleep on the underside. memory foam is a love it or hate kinda thing. I don't know where the percentages lie, but all I hear are complaints. The bottom half of the mattress is poly foam. Flip it over and sleep on that side. you can use your down cover to soften it up. The underside is much firmer. If that works for you, you won't need to think about buying another for a while.

Thanks, Pete
