Hi! My husband and I just purchased a Sealy Trueform mattress and I also got a Tempurpedic pillow. When I opened the pillow, I saw the sticker saying that it may have some odor that will dissipate over time - the smell almost knocked me down, it was so strong. I have had to put the pillow on the other side of the house to air out. Since the mattress was a different brand, I was hoping it wouldn't have such an odor. I smelled it a little bit when we opened it up, but not so much after it was in the room. I slept on it for 2 nights before my throat started getting scratchy. I then got laryngitis and have developed a really bad cough. I can only assume that this came from the chemicals in the mattress, since I was feeling just fine before it's arrival. I am now sleeping in my son's room. Do you know, typically, how long it takes for the chemical smell to go away? We have a 30 day return policy and may have to return it, since I can't sleep on it. I did not notice any odor on the test pillow or the test mattress at the showroom, so it seems like at some point the smell will dissappear.
Also, if we have to return the mattress, can you recommend another Sealy mattress (as the store only sells Sealy and Tempurpedic)? My husband is about 320 lbs. and I am about 135 lbs. He likes a firmer mattress and is a stomach/side sleeper, I like a firmer base, but more cushiony on top, so that it conforms to my curves when I sleep on my side/stomach. We both have lower back problems (herniated disk and bulging disk), so we were hoping that a new mattress might help with support. Sorry to be so long-winded. I appreciate any help that you can give us - we are in a time crunch to decide what to do! Thanks so much! Julie
Hi Julie. Odor aside, you have the wrong mattress for your needs. In the past 1/4 century, I can't think of anything that has drawn such negative reactions as memory foam. It doesn't matter what brand and Sealy's isn't any better than anyone elses. A person with any sense of reason has to conclude that so many negative physical reactions can only mean that the product is unhealthy...not to mention doing a lousy job of what its meant to do.
Memory foam is a temperature sensitive material. As your body's heat warms the foam, it softens, then recovers slowly. Day by day, the time it takes to soften grows shorter and the depth to which is sinks becomes greater. A 320 pound man will compress it into nothingness in a matter of months.
The mattress that has the greatest chance of survival, with enough cushioning to be comfortable for you, is the Sealy SpringFree Beachside. I would prefer to see a man that big on the Weybridge, but I'm afraid you would find it too firm. The Sealy latex has nearly no odor and zero negative health effects have been reported.
