Hi Pete.
I read much of your info last night, that we’re off the memory foam idea. Thanks for the warning.
According to what I've read on your blog, my Venice Beach “latex” failed because it really wasn’t 100% latex.
The non latex material, (the poly foam), is what failed over time.
So as I look at latex moving forward, I’m locked in to 100% latex product like Pure Talalay Latex Bliss or Natura or EverEden.
That raises the question of 100% organic, pure latex or a blend of pure/synthetic latex.
Also, the Dunlop process vs. Talalay...Should I be concerned about a blended product relative to durability?
I read conflicting material about one being stronger than the other. Or, are we splitting hairs at this point?
Thanks for your time, Stan
Hi Stan,
That's right. It was the poly foam used to soften the top of the Venice Beach that compressed.
When it comes to latex, there are a few different ones and some need to be avoided.
Whatever anyone is selling, it's the best....making an objective viewpoint hard to come by.
The original and still the most durable, is Dunlop.
The Talalay process is the same as the Dunlop, with a freezing step added to the process.
This freezing step suspends the particles, making for a more supple feel.
The particles settle in the Dunlop process, making for a more dense material.
Synthetic latex is a molecular clone of natural latex. No toxic chemicals are used to make it.
Mixing synthetic to natural latex, makes the end result more consistent, while the feel of all natural latex can vary from batch to batch.
However, synthetic latex is not as durable as natural latex...but, the difference is small.
Those would be from Pure Talalay Bliss.

During the process of turning liquid latex into foam, it goes through a 5 stage washing, which removes most of the protein, the allergen, that is naturally found in latex and is common in latex gloves and bandages. This, typically, manifests itself as a topical allergy. The finished product has enough of the allergen removed to be called hypo-allergenic.
We offer latex that is certified to be completely allergen free....Vytex Dunlop Latex...used in the EverEden Latex Mattresses.

Pure, All Natural Latex, in and of itself, is organic.
What makes a latex mattress organic, is the other materials used to finish the mattress...like the cotton cover and the wool used as a natural flame retardant. The cotton must be organically grown and the wool must come from sheep that are fed an organic diet.
It's these details that make an organic latex mattress so expensive...like the Natura of Canada Organic Latex Mattresses, shown here:

In a way, this can be considered splitting hairs, as any of these latex mattresses are infinitely better than any poly foam or memory foam.
All of the above perform equally well and are extremely durable.
The exception to all this, is latex made in China, where they add clay as a filler...still sold as natural, as clay is a natural material.
The clay makes it cheaper to make and greatly affects the longevity...not lasting nearly as long.
