Hi Deb,

The Edgefield was made when S&F was “The Cadillac of the Industry”.

They had been considered that for many decades.

They became nothing more than expensive junk as of January 2014, after Tempurpedic bought them the previous year.

 

Not only is the Edgefield a discontinued model, the entire industry went bad.

All of the name brands have been sold and all are using memory foam upholstery.

It’s the memory foam that has caused a marked reduction in overall quality.

 

Most stores have gone along with all of this.

Most stores are a sea of mattresses upholstered with memory foam, because that’s where the profits are. Memory foam is specifically designed to cause a mattress to need frequent replacing…and not under the terms of the warranty. They go bad quickly and you are stuck rebuying.

 

Most people don’t know that memory foam is the problem, since the industry and sales people to a great job of promoting it…making it sound like the best thing since sliced bread. The result is constantly repeating the mistake.

 

So, to answer your question, it is highly unlikely that you will find this mattress I’ll be recommending in any store near you to try. A google search is the best way to know for sure.

 

We had been a Sealy/S&F dealer for many years prior to Tempurpedic buying them in 2013.

It was at that time we had to go shopping at the industry trade shows to find high quality alternatives that have NO Memory Foam in them.

I'm Very Interested in Natura of Canada Greenspring Mattresses.

I'm very interested in your Natura of Canada Greenspring Liberta Mattresses, but a little concerned because I’m not able to try the mattress.  First of all, I noticed that the mattress contains wool.  

I have a problem with wool clothing in that it makes me itch and I’ll end up getting red from it.  

Will this be a problem with the mattress. Also not sure if I need Firm or Plush. 

Secondly I have broken my back 5 Times and have a lot of problems sleeping at night.  

I bought a Tempurpedic mattress which I exchanged for a softer one because I was unable to sleep comfortably at night. The comfort level did not improve with the new one and I have put up with it now for five years.  

I tried several mattresses today including the Simmons Beautyrest Black, Serra and Stearns and Foster.  

I found that the plush models were often too soft and didn’t provide enough support.  

I would like a mattress that is supportive but comfortable and doesn’t wake me up at night with sore hips and shoulders when I try sleeping on my side.  Maybe I am asking for too much from a mattress.  

Buying a mattresses that comes rolled up in a box makes me a bit apprehensive.

I like the idea of a person having to install it. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

All of those mattresses that you tried and didn’t work for you have one thing in common that made it impossible for you to get comfortable. They are all upholstered with memory foam.

Despite all the hype to the contrary, memory foam is the worst upholstery material ever invented.

It’s a temperature sensitive material that softens as it warms from your body heat.

You then sink into it…further and further as the weeks and months go by.

You’ve lost the alignment of your spine and you’re hitting the firmer materials that support it. Memory foam is specifically designed to cause a mattress to need frequent replacing…and not under the terms of the warranty.

Memory foam has many negative side effects and is simply a poor quality product.

And as if all that weren’t bad enough, memory foam off gasses the toxic chemicals from which it’s made.

 

Trying before you buy was the way to go about all this back in the day before memory foam came to dominate the industry....when it was difficult to make a mistake.

Now, it’s nothing more than a bad habit, since memory foam is so highly deceptive.

 

The Natura of Canada Greenspring Ultra Plush Mattress is what my wife and I sleep on at home. 

Our mattress is still in like new condition after almost a decade, with each of us weighing more than 200 lbs.

Which Simmons Beautyrest Mattress do you recommend?

Which of the "Harmony" Beautyrest mattresses you would suggest now?

Since Simmons was sold to an investment group, they’ve changed the upholstery to the same cheap memory foam all of the other name brands are using. If fact, that same investment group that bought Simmons also bought Serta.

Sealy and Stearns & Foster are now owned by Tempurpedic.

 

Common memory foam is specifically designed to cause a mattress to need frequent replacing. 

That’s less of a problem for people who weight a little as the two of you.

But, the highly toxic chemical off gassing of the memory foam is something that will affect you negatively.

 We no longer recommend any name brand mattress to anyone for those reasons.

 

What I’m recommending for you is the same mattress my wife and I have been sleeping on for many years.

Simmons Beautyrest, Saatva Mattresses Gave Me Severe Back Pain.

I recently purchased a couple of different mattresses.

One was a Simmons Beautyrest extra firm, and a Saatva innerspring firm mattress.

Both mattresses gave me severe back pain.

The Simmons Beautyrest mattress was too hard on my back and gave me severe back pain after 30 days.

The Saatva mattress kind of sunk in the middle after 40-45 days of use.

I am on the heavier side, around 235 pounds with 6 ft in height.

 

I read on your blog about the latex mattresses and its benefits.  

What are some of your recommendations in this category?  

I am really looking for a mattress that can alleviate the back pain.

 

I saw from your website, that latex mattress can be full latex or can be hybrid (innerspring and latex).

Hi Robert,

There is much more to choosing a mattress than simply the degree of firmness and softness.

To listen to all the advertising and sales pitches, you'd think that today's mattresses are all high quality. 

They aren't.

In fact, none of the name brands are made well enough to hold a large person for any length of time much beyond a year, or so.

The product in these mattresses that causes them to fail, is the memory foam upholstery.

Memory foam is a dream material, enhancing profits for the manufacturers and retailers, by causing mattresses to need frequent replacing...creating a nightmare for the consumer.

Memory foam is a temperature sensitive material that softens as it warms from your body heat.

Being so, memory foam will fail under people a lot lighter in weight than you.

To make a successful long term purchase, you must avoid mattresses with memory foam in them.

 

You're on the right track, with looking at latex. 

But, an all foam mattress...even one made entirely of high quality latex, may or may not be right for you.

What an all foam mattress does not provide, is push back support against your spine.

If you have any disc related back problems, you'd be better off with an innerspring mattress that's upholstered with latex...for the support worn discs require. This condition is more common, the older and heavier we are.

I, too, have several disc problems, being both, older and on the heavy side.

 

An innerspring and latex mattress is best for you, the best made is:

Firm, Comfortable Mattress to Relieve Back Pain.

My husband and I are looking for a new mattress.

We’ve been sleeping on a very old one he’s owned long before we even met.

It’s been flipped and spun so many times I’ve lost count.

There’s a huge dip in the center causing us to both roll towards the middle in the night.

I have woken up everyday, for years, with back and neck pain that seems to be getting worse by the day.

Recently, I’ve begun waking up with a sore ear, due to the pillow now I assume.

My boyfriend does not seem to have any those issues but we both toss and turn in the night.

 

I am 5’4”, 120 lbs and sleep mostly only sides and stomach, sometimes my back.

He is 5’7”, 185 lbs and sleeps mostly on his back and sides.

He’s a bit of a caveman so if he could find a slab of rock to sleep on, he would.

He likes a firm mattress. I like firm as well but with some added comfort.

 

Any suggestions for a firm but comfortable mattress that will relieve my back pain?

Hi Jenn,

Since you've been reading the blog, you probably know that memory foam is thee thing to avoid.

Unfortunately, all of the once trusted name brands have gone bad...all using memory foam for the upholstery.

 

The best type of mattress is one with an individually pocketed coil system.

Each coil moves independently from the others, which does a couple of positive things.

1) The contouring support maintains the natural alignment of the spine....excellent support that does a great job of relieving back pain.

2) The coils a 9" tall, compressed into a 7" pocket, so that it always pushing back up against you.

3) Since the coils are not tied together, two people in the mattress won't feel each other move.

4) Even as it ages and wears, you will never roll together.

 

Simmons Beautyrest has used such a coil system since the 1920s.

But again, today's Simmons mattresses are upholstered with memory foam.

 

The mattress we sleep on at home, is the mattress I'm recommending to you.

The Natura of Canada Greenspring mattresses use that same coil system...with a couple of positive changes.

1) The coil count is higher than Simmons

2) The coils are stronger...made of double tempered steel, while the Simmons coils are not tempered at all.

 

More importantly, the upholstery is US made Natural Talalay Latex...containing NO Memory Foam.

Because the components of these mattresses are so very high in quality, none of them are as soft

Replacing a Simmons Beautyrest Black Mattress.

My wife and I are needing to replace our mattress.

And me being a research fanatic, I found your site, AND LOVE it, and all you've educated us with!  

A million thanks for your well-written documentation, and frankness.  

Your "need to know" page is the BEST ever!

 

Apologies in advance for such a long email!  

Here's our situation, followed by the usual questions you receive from all of us.

 

In 2008 my wife and I bought our very first expensive mattress, and we have LOVED it since day one!!  

Years later, for the most part, we still love it today, but its body divots are a bit much.  

We need to replace it.  We bought a queen Simmons Beautyrest Black, Executive (paid about $2,800).  

You can confirm if my memory serves me or not, but I recall stats on this bed were something like...around 2,000 coils(?), latex, sides covered in cashmere.  

There is ZERO jiggle when the other gets into or out of bed, or when turning.  

We bought the thinner box spring for it. We are now 63 & 66 and we still sleep VERY comfortably in it.  

We want to replace it with the same type/firmness of bed.

 

Given all that you've written, we only want another bed with similar, if not exactly the same design....a ton of coils, and latex.  NO MEMORY FOAM.  Cost is not an issue.  

I weigh 195 (6'-0"ft), and she weighs 135 (5'-4").  I sleep 85% on sides, 15% back.  

She sleeps 5% side, 95% back.  I have no body aches/pains.  

My wife has minor aches/pain in lower left back and left hip.

 

So far, it looks like the Natura of Canada Greenspring pocketed coil & latex may be a match?

I don't know if the Firm or Luxury Firm is the closest match to our Beautyrest Black?

 

We have the old metal frame.  

We have a head board with storage doors (yes, it's from the 80's), and if both the Greenspring mattress and foundation are 12" each, that will put the mattress high for the headboard.  

Question: if both are 12" high, can the foundation/mattress sit directly on the floor?  

Does the warranty require the mattress/foundation be ON a frame, or is the carpeted floor OK?  

Is either OK?

 

Q:  Was the latex in our 2008 Beautyrest mattress Talalay or Dunlop?

 

Q:  What do you think about Greenspring as a match, and if so, which one?  

 

Q:  If not Greenspring, what brand/type do you recommend to be closest to our Beautyrest Black?

That was an excellent quality mattress, but now, it’s gone.

Simmons still makes a “Black” Beautyrest, but since being sold to investors, they’ve switched to memory foam upholstery.

 

The motion reduction comes from the individually pocketed coils, which all move independently from the others. The coil count depends on how you look at it.

Some fuzzy math was involved. In a queen size, there were 900 pockets.

The coil “density” was 1000, which meant that 1000 pocketed coils would fit, had it not been for the foam encasement around the perimeter of the mattress.

Each pocket had one wire co figured into two coils…hence the 2000 coil count.
