I Purchased a Sealy SpringFree Latex Mattress 14 years ago.

I had undergone extensive surgery and needed something that would not affect pressure points.

As a new mattress, it was comfortable and supportive, but a tad on the firm side for me. 

Over time with more use, it's definitely broken it in and comfortable. 

 

I'm 58, 5'4" 135lbs

I'm a stomach & side sleeper. I have lower back & lumbar issues and tailbone tenderness. 

I also have fibromyalgia. I tend to toss and turn a lot when not comfortable.

 

My husband is 59. 6'0" 190lbs

He's a back sleeper. He likes to sleep on his side, but his hip and arm start to hurt.

 

We both like a medium firm bed with a plush feel. 

We don't like feeling like we're sleeping on top of the bed.

 

We replaced our old Sealy Latex for a purple mattress. (Now I wished we kept it and got a quality topper.) 

I hate it. It smells like crayons & chlorine. 

It's like sleeping on a rubber band. 

And though I sleep soundly when I finally fall sleep-I wake in pain & discomfort all over.  

I've resorted to sleeping in my son's room while he's at college, where we put our old Sealy latex mattress. 

 

What Sealy SpringFree model given above experience should I be looking at now?

Sealy no longer makes anything like that today...not since that company was sold in 2013.

Your Sealy mattress was made of synthetic latex with polyurethane foam on top.

Replacing a Sealy SpringFree Beachside Latex Mattress.

I found it to be too plush and simply turned it over to the firm side, (per on your recommendation).

That was great advice! I've really loved sleeping on that firmer side!

You've already helped me with my last mattress, back in 2007. 

It lasted a long time and I've been very happy with it. However, it now needs replacing.

I am only interested in an All Latex Mattress. 

Either all Dunlop or a Dunlop core with Talalay upper layers.

But figuring this company out is borderline impossible.

If I check their website in the US Naturaworld.com, they don’t have any all latex mattresses, only hybrids.

If I switch over to Canada, they now have a full line of all latex mattresses.

 

Here’s where things get weird for the Canadian side of Natura…...

If I select "get in touch", they direct me to Zedbed, which is a large established Canadian manufacturer who makes their own mattresses, even pour their own foam, and they don’t sell Natura mattresses. 

Zedbed is definitely not using their mattresses either as the makeup is completely different.

​So, I am confused. 

Is it possible to buy a Natura all latex mattress?...Or is this all smoke and mirrors?

A natural latex mattress has a body impression in less than a month.

This mattress was advertised as not compressing, nor leaving a “body” indentation.  

After sleeping on it for less than a month, I find it already has a body impression.  

It feels like I have to “roll uphill” to turn over.  This is with the “firm” side of a two-sided mattress.

 

Is this common with natural latex mattresses?  

The reason I bought a new mattress in the first place was that my old one had such a deep depression, that I felt like I was sleeping on a hillside!  

I had expected to not have to deal with that, with this new latex one.  

Do you know if your latex mattresses develop a body indentation?

Unfortunately, many retailers, especially those on the west coast, are offering latex that’s imported from China.

China adds clay to the mix when processing, which cheapens the latex and ends up performing as yours has.

Clay is a natural material, so it’s sold as natural latex…with no mention of the clay.

 

Pure, high-quality latex does not take a body impression…not for many years.

And even then, only slightly.

Nothing we sell is imported from China.

I've had my current Cali King mattress (Serta Perfect Sleeper, Artistry Collection for over 20 yrs. 

Yes, it's still awesome and I'm still sleeping on it and of course they do not make them anymore.

I've been looking at Stearns and Foster and after doing reviews on numerous websites and the BBB I learned a few things:

 

1.  Weight restrictions on beds.  Some beds only hold the weight of 500 lbs., so if you and your partner's combined weight exceed this don't buy certain mattresses.

2.  Make sure the frame for the bed will hold you and your partner and the weight of the mattress and box springs.  

3.  Make sure if you do not purchase a box spring that you pay attention to the frame the mattress will sit on.  

The spacing in the planks will also cause the mattress to sag in time.

 

With this being said, I was told by numerous people in the mattress industry, as well as reviews, that Stearns and Foster mattresses sag in the middle because they weren't made with enough support in that area. 

Tragic, most people eventually migrate to the center of the mattress during the night.  

So, moving on from them. It just seems every mattress I look at the reviews always state how the bed sags within the first 2-3 yrs. of owning it.  

I've tried three mattresses at this store in Huntsville, AL. 

Of course, there is no literature online about them and the company's salespeople do not know anything about them, except for the fact that they were made exclusively for that store. So, I can't even read reviews on them.

The only thing that’s true, about the information you have so far, is that most mattresses aren’t made nearly as well as they had been. Your notion as to why is completely wrong.

What most of today’s mattresses have in them that your 20 year old Serta doesn’t have in it, is memory foam upholstery.

 

All of the mattresses that you’ve asked me about are upholstered with memory foam.

All of the name brand mattresses that you could once trust to make a quality product have been sold. 

Sealy and Stearns & Foster were purchased by Tempurpedic.

The investment group that bought Serta also bought Simmons.

 

Memory foam is specifically designed to cause a mattress to need frequent replacing. 

Not only is it a poor quality product, memory foam also off gasses the toxic chemicals from which memory foam is made…creating a health hazard.

 

And, a mattress with a pillowtop will show wear faster than one without.

 

What you say you want won’t work for you for very long.

Since your mattress is "Still Awesome" I recommend that you take it with you when you move.

DO NOT BUY A NEW MATTRESS!

I've been looking through all your helpful info on your site and trying to make a final decision.

I'm 5'8 my partner is 5'3, and we're both about 225 (and both women). 

I'm replacing a Simmons Beautrest that I got in 2013. 

I am trying to decide between the Natura Greenspring or the Wolf Tulah Mattress.

 

We're interested in a Queen with no immediate plans to upgrade to a King size.

But that could happen in the next 3-5 years, if we get more space and need to furnish a guest bedroom. 

Then we can use the new queen size mattress we're getting now.

 

We each have fairly frequent issues with back pain and stiffness. 

Much of it is due to my current mattress deteriorating. 

I'm more a side sleeper (75%)/back sleeper (25%).

My partner is about the same, but would be more of a back sleeper if the mattress was more supportive.

 

What would your recommendation be based on all this? 

Neither of us likes something too firm feeling but also not too plush or soft feeling.

It would have been a Sealy, which had some polyurethane foam on top.

Now that Sealy is owned by Tempurpedic, they make nothing as good as what you previously purchased.
