Hi Pete,
I've been reading through your blogs and website during a restless night's sleep.
I am 26 and have wrestled with hip pain for over two years.
When it started I was very fit, and thought it may have been a sport injury and sought physio/chiropractic care.
They could not find any trigger other than muscle imbalance/a weak core.
Since then, the hip pain comes and goes in waves.
I try to keep up with core strengthening exercises and expensive physio visits that relieve some of the discomfort.
Two weeks ago I went to Southeast Asia and all the mattresses we slept on were rock hard.
The hip pain totally disappeared.
I then realized I had bought my medium-firm memory foam mattress, about four months before my hip pain began.
I got back home on Sunday and the hip pain is worse after one night's sleep. So, bought a new mattress Monday.
The salesman recommended the same line of mattress but the firm model.
I spent a fair amount of time at the store.
So, based on his suggestion and my desperation to deal with the problem, I purchased that mattress.
It was delivered the next day, Tuesday of this week. Here it is, Friday, and my hip pain isn't any better.
After reading your feedback to others with hip pain, I see that I made another wrong purchase.
The beds during my trip were far from comfortable and I know I need to find a happy medium.
But, I'm so sick of the pain that has disrupted my lifestyle and sleeping habits.
Now that I am confident of the cause, I am committed to finding the solution as soon as possible.
I was wondering if the Latex toppers, you have suggested to others, would have any benefit on a firm memory foam mattress.
Thanks for any suggestions you can provide. I'm 5'6" and about 140lbs.
Jill
Hi Jill,
Your problem, concerning your mattress, is the memory foam.
Memory foam is a temperature sensitive material that softens as it warms from your body heat.
You then sink into it...totally throwing off the alignment of your body...creating the pressure point pain it claims to relieve.
Most female hip pain is simply a pressure point problem.
For that, the softer sleeping surface of the latex topper works well.
However, it seems that your hip pain may be different...especially since you felt relief from sleeping on a hard mattress.
Before buying anything, flip your mattress over.
It is intended to be a one sided mattress. But, the memory foam is supported by very firm high density polyurethane foam.
Flipping the mattress will put the memory foam at the bottom and the firm poly foam on top.
It seems to me that THIS should be all your need to do.
After sleeping on that side, you can then determine if you need a latex topper to make it more comfortable.
If so, the Pure Talalay Bliss 2" Plush Natural Talalay Latex Topper would be the one to get.
Here is a link to those latex toppers:
