Hi Pete,
My husband has a couple of herniated discs.
We bought a memory foam mattress after the salesperson told us this was best for his condition.
At first, it seemed to help a bit. We were hopeful that his back would continue to improve with time.
The best result was at the beginning. But now, his back pain is worse than before.
Unfortunately for us, "Now", is after the comfort exchange period has ended.
I can't return it and I can't exchange it. He's back to sleeping in his recliner.
We need a mattress that will relieve his back pain for more than a couple of months.
Neither of us are heavy. What would you recommend we buy now?
I sleep on my side. He sleeps on his back. We need a queen size mattress.
Thanks, Beth
Hi Beth,
Today's salespeople are trained on how to close a sale...and that's is the extent of their training.
In the old days, we learned about the components of a mattress...how each of them worked and the benefit they provided. But then again, that was at a time when the factories compete with each other to make a quality mattress.
Since then, all of the name brands have been sold to investors.
All of the name brands and many of the off brands use memory foam, which is specifically designed to cause a mattress to need frequent replacing. Memory foam is, in fact, the worst upholstery material ever invented.
No only is it a lousy product, in terms of quality, it also off gasses the toxic chemicals form which it's made.
So, the key to a successful mattress purchase is to avoid any mattress made with memory foam.
Also, any all foam mattress is the wrong choice to support herniated discs.
Even an all latex mattress, which is the best of the foams, won't do the job.
His spine requires the push back support of an innerspring mattress.
The best of those is an individually pocketed coil, which maintains the natural alignment of the spine.
It's THIS that will relieve his back pain.
Add latex upholstery to that, and you have a mattress that provides the proper support for herniated discs that will do so for many years to come. Latex upholstery is very comfortable and extremely long lasting.
Here is a link to two mattress. Both will do the job. The Tulah is the more comfortable at the surface.
Since there is a female who will sleep on this mattress, I recommend to the Tulah model to relieve hip pain, which is common with female side sleepers.

Shipping is free and there's no sales tax.
We recommend using a waterproof mattress protector with every mattress.
Keeping the upholstery materials clean and dry will extend the life of the mattress.
Thanks, Pete
