Hi Pete,
I am SO glad I found your site while researching mattress'. I love your honesty and up-front attitude!
In a "greedy" industry, such as yours, it's refreshing to know that someone is willing to "pull the curtain back" and give honest & valuable suggestions!
I'm in a similar greedy, overpriced industry (retail jewelry) and as a small biz owner, I take the same approach with my customers as well.
So, I liked you right away!
So here's my dilemma & question:
We recently were given an reasonably new queen mattress set, (a few old), along with a beautiful sleigh bed frame from friends that have moved.
The new set is a Sealy Posturepedic Belleza Plush. This set was used in their guest bedroom, so it didn't get everyday wear and tear.
A most welcomed replacement for our 20 yr. old worn mattress.
Our old mattress isn't totally worn down, just a little saggy, but the box spring is broken.
I can't remember all the details of the old mattress. I want to say it was a Sealy. I DO know it was called a pillow soft - not pillow top.
From the beginning, I've always had a heavy, thick alternative down topper on it.
We never slept without it on the mattress, but I didn't put it on the new one.
The new mattress obviously has memory foam on the top and is much softer than the old one and I definitely feel it's lack of support.
In fact, my lower back is feeling it for sure and after reading your info on memory foam, I'm having second thoughts about using it.
After finding your site and reading all your info, my initial question was, which latex topper to purchase with the new mattress?
After reading your advice to other people, I'm thinking maybe keeping the old mattress with a latex topper is the way to go. What do you think?
I'm 42, 5'7", 240 lbs. and am a side sleeper mostly, or back sleeper. I've got minor lower back issues and joint issues - arthritis, but in overall good health.
I'm on my feel majority of the days working retail, so my feet & legs ache a lot.
My husband is a mechanic - 46, 6'1" 200 lbs. and in generally good health, although, he has minor lower back & sciatica issues and is a side, stomach sleeper.
Sorry this was so lengthy, any other info you need let me know!
Thank you so much for your help and for sharing your knowledge with everyone!!
~Lisa
Hi Lisa,
I believe you have everything you need without having to buy anything.
Today's mattresses, for the most part, are one sided. That is to say, that all of the comfy upholstery layers are on one side. The other side is much firmer.
Your body needs firm support and a comfy cushy sleeping surface.
So, flip the mattress over and add your Alternative Down Topper back to it.
If that works for you, you're good to go without having spent a dime.
If that doesn't work for you, THEN get a latex topper for your older Sealy.
For that, I recommend the EverEden Pure, All Natural 2" Vytex Dunlop Topper in Medium
Shown here:
100% All-Natural Vytex Dunlop Latex Mattress Toppers. Ever-Eden’s Vytex Dunlop is, virtually, Allergen Free. And while the Vytex Dunlop comes in the same 2 choices of comfort levels, Dunlop is a more dense material and does not have as supple a feel as the Talalay Latex Toppers.
