Back pain from a floor sample mattress.

I’m having back pain from a floor sample mattress from a local furniture store.

The mattress was like new and we wanted it for a spare bedroom set.

The mattress is a king sized Stearns & Foster.

It is set on two side by side box springs.

 

I started sleeping on this bed when my wife had a cold and I didn't want.

Plus, our snoring wakes each other up. 

I have been sleeping on this S&F mattress for about nine months. 

I turn it a quarter turn regularly. Side sleeper with latex pillows I got from you.

Some days I wake up and it feels like my lower back is S shaped.

It takes a while to shake that off. 

I'm 63 and have had bulging lower discs a couple of times in the past. 

I was wondering if this mattress could be flipped over and then a 2” latex topper be used on it to keep me off the possible memory foam or use the topper over the mattress as is. 

Our other bed is a king size Simmons Beautyrest Black Mattress, with an Ever Eden 2 inch latex Talalay topper that we also got from you.

Any help would be appreciated.

Good Morning Garth,

There’s a good chance that the floor sample may have been a return.

At this point, getting a latex topper for it is the logical move.

I suggest trying it on top of the mattress first.

It’ll probably be better for your back if you flip the mattress, but why do it if you don’t have to.

Hi Jillian,

EverEden has had a change of ownership....the original owner's son.

The new owner has abandoned latex for the more lucrative memory foam.

I've seen retailers go downhill after the sons take over. 

This is the 1st time I've seen this happen to a manufacturer.

It's always a pity to see a know-it-all child that a business that a father has built and substitute quality for profits.

 

So, rather than have a dead link out there, which appears in so many of our older posts, I decided to tie that link to the Pure Bliss Latex Topper page.

A Latex Topper for the Flip Side of a Tempurpedic Mattress.

Like many others, I purchased a Tempurpedic mattress that I became unhappy with 2 years after getting it.

At first, it felt fine. But it became extremely uncomfortable and all of my back pain returned, and with a vengeance.

I called the store to complain and they sent out an inspector to look at the mattress.

They said that the mattress looked fine, so there was nothing they could do.

There again, you are right on the money. My back stopped hurting, but my shoulder and hips are sore.

Help Selecting a New Mattress System for My Wife and Me.

I wanted to ask for your help selecting a new mattress system for my wife and me.  

We are currently moving from a queen to a king (more room to roll and not wake up the other).

 

Current situation:

Me: 6’2” 240 lbs

Her: 5’6” 210 lbs

Queen two separate bladder sleep number bed that we dislike.  

We do have a mattress topper (wool 2” I think) that has made it livable the last 5 yrs.  

I like firm, she likes softer, but not too soft to sink too much.  

We both get relatively hot so the wool topper helped that too.  

We do like the bounce typical of spring mattresses that we don’t have.  

We also had a traditional mattress that had lots of different higher end coils that you couldn’t feel the other person. 

We liked that too. Snoring, (nose strips help most of the time), but no other real back problems per se.

 

What we’re looking for:

King size, firm separate higher end coil/materials with latex topper.  

Budget around 4k or so, assuming it’ll last >7 yrs.

 

We do like a higher bed so unless mattress/pad are >13” regular box is fine.  

We have ordered a 4 poster king bed frame with wood cross supports.

 

I was considering a heavenly bed or one of the nicer hotel mattresses as I get a decent discount via Marriott. 

No allergies, but I know down feathers aren’t good for her.  

So, if you have a bed set you’d recommend including mattress full wrap protector and pillows with protector.

That would be appreciated. (usually get those at bed bath beyond or amazon) 

Never tried a latex pillow so that might be interesting to try as well.

 

We are looking to make a purchase this week and appreciate the insight/recommendation.

Your email raised a question for me, concerning the 4 poster bed.
There has to be more than just cross supports.
There must be support up the center, (head to foot), with legs that reach the floor.
So, it would be prudent to check on that.

The mattress I’m recommending for you is the same one we sleep on at home.
It uses an individually pocketed coil with the coils made of double tempered steel and natural Talalay Latex upholstery.
The specifications of this mattress far exceed anything Simmons makes.
Even their Heavenly Bed, hotel mattresses, are not made as well...using non-tempered coils and polyurethane foam.

My wife and I are similar in size. Our mattress is, still, in like new condition after more than 4.5 years. What’s more, the cost doesn’t even come close to what you’ve budgeted and will outlast your 7 yr. mark.
That mattress is the Natura of Canada Greenspring Ultra Plush.
The support is quite firm, with a comfortable sleeping surface.

We added a Pure Bliss 3” Plush latex topper to ours, due to my wife’s sensitive hip, which relieved her hip pain. Otherwise, it’s perfectly comfortable just as it comes.
I would suggest holding off on purchasing a latex topper until you get the mattress.
You may not need it.

A Simmons Beautyrest Mattress and Latex Topper to Relieve Sciatica and Back Pain.

My wife carries all her stress in her neck and shoulders. 

She holds all her tension in that area and gets headaches and muscle tension in those areas.

The reason why you sleep so well on a Simmons Beautyrest mattress is due to the pre-compressed, individually pocketed coil system.

They use a 9” coil, compressed into a 7” pocket, so the coils are always pushing back against your spine.

The coils move independently from one another, providing contouring support that automatically adjusts to the shape of your body and maintains the natural alignment of your spine.

Worn discs pinch nerves, which is what causes your sciatica.
