5 Year Old Sealy Plush Pillowtop Mattress, Too Hot, Back Pain.

We have a 5 year old Sealy (Plush Pillowtop) mattress that has always been too hot, and is now causing pain in the lower back. 

The mattress still looks to be in good condition, with no obvious indentations to look at it. But it feels like I’m sinking into it.

Options seem to be; try a latex topper, or return mattress to Sealy for refurbishment, or replace it.

Your advice would be appreciated.

Hi Brian,

Sending a mattress back to the manufacturer to be refurbished is not an option. That hasn’t been an option for several decades.

If going with a latex topper, you’ll find that works better if you first flip the mattress over before adding it. The flip side provides a firmer base support for your back and the topper provides the comfort.

Replacing a Simmons Beautyrest Mattress from 2006.

Simmons was sold, 10 years after you bought yours.

The upholstery materials changed, and not for the better.

There is no equivalent to yours anymore.

Everything that is now produced by the owners of Simmons is upholstered with memory foam. They have nothing worth buying.

What you have uses an individually pocketed coil system, which maintains the natural alignment of the body and spine. 

THIS, is what has always made a Beautyrest so popular.

In checking with the Sealy Hospitality website, the Artesia model is no longer being made. It featured an individually pocketed coil system, which is why you found it so comfortable. The minimal use of memory foam helped, as well as.

Replacing a 26 yo Simmons Beautyrest Mattress.

Hi Pete,

I found you when doing a google search regarding my old Simmons Beautyrest mattress.  I wrote Simmons, but they could not give me a good answer.  I do not know if you can.  

 

Around 26 years ago my wife and I purchased a Simmons Beautyrest Eminence Mattress.  We love the mattress but think it is time to replace it.  It certainly does not owe us anything.  We are very nervous about getting a new mattress.  My wife has had two back surgeries and I have back problems as well.  Whenever we stay at hotels or at friends homes etc our backs ache.  We would like to replace our mattress and box spring with the closest thing we can find.  Here is the information we have regarding our mattress and box spring set.  

The top of the mattress says Beautyrest, The Do Not Disturb Mattress, Pocketed Coil Springs Respond Individually, Eminence.

 

The tag is difficult to read but this is what I can make out:

Innerspring units covered with:  57% Urethane Foam, 42% Resin Treated Fiber By Product, 1% Blended Cotton

No one makes a mattress like that anymore…not even Simmons, which isn’t really Simmons anymore.

The mattress industry, on a whole, has gone bad. All of the name brands that you could once trust to make quality products have been sold to investors who are now only interested in profits and not quality.

 

You say you love your mattress. If that is still true, you don’t need a new one.

Replacing a perfectly good mattress with one that is made today by those name brands will result in disappointment and pain.

 

Your list of components did not include memory foam, which is what is used by those name brands for the express purpose of making a mattress that requires frequent replacing.

 

My advice is to keep what you have until you are no longer sleeping well.

My recommendation for a new mattress is the Natura Greenspring, which uses the same, but stronger, coil unit that’s in your Beautyrest.

And like your Beautyrest, has no memory foam in it.

My wife and I have had their ultra plush model for 10 years, and it’s still in like new condition, despite each of us weighing more than 200 lbs.

I, too, have a very bad back, but sleep and wake without back pain.

 

If you insist upon buying a new mattress, that would be the one.

It’s not as soft as it sounds.

Sealy Posturepedic Signature Mattress Equivalent.

I’m sorry to say that no equivalent mattress exists.

Sealy has been owned by Tempurpedic since 2013.

They haven’t made a decent quality mattress since then…certainly, nothing even close to the quality of the mattress you’re replacing.

A Replacement for Sealy Posturepedic Crown Jewel Mattress..

There is nothing on the market that is exactly like them, today....especially not from Sealy.

Sealy was sold to Tempur-Pedic in 2013. Now, all Sealy mattresses are upholstered with mostly memory foam.

Your mattress had no memory foam in it, which is why they performed so well, for so long.

There’s nothing from Sealy that’s even close, now that Tempurpedic owns them.

The Edgefield was made when S&F was “The Cadillac of the Industry”.

They had been considered that for many decades.

They became nothing more than expensive junk as of January 2014, after Tempurpedic bought them the previous year.

 

Not only is the Edgefield a discontinued model, the entire industry went bad.

All of the name brands have been sold and all are using memory foam upholstery.

It’s the memory foam that has caused a marked reduction in overall quality.

 

Most stores have gone along with all of this.

Most stores are a sea of mattresses upholstered with memory foam, because that’s where the profits are. Memory foam is specifically designed to cause a mattress to need frequent replacing…and not under the terms of the warranty. They go bad quickly and you are stuck rebuying.

 

Most people don’t know that memory foam is the problem, since the industry and sales people to a great job of promoting it…making it sound like the best thing since sliced bread. The result is constantly repeating the mistake.

 

So, to answer your question, it is highly unlikely that you will find this mattress I’ll be recommending in any store near you to try. A google search is the best way to know for sure.

 

We had been a Sealy/S&F dealer for many years prior to Tempurpedic buying them in 2013.

It was at that time we had to go shopping at the industry trade shows to find high quality alternatives that have NO Memory Foam in them.

The Natura of Canada Greenspring line of mattresses is what we found to replace S&F. In fact, the specifications of these mattresses exceed those of the old S&F.

 

There are 4 models in the Natura of Canada Greenspring line.

The Ultra Plush model is the most comfortable…without being too soft.

Because the components of these mattresses are of such high quality, they all feel firmer than their comfort designations makes them sound.

 

The S&F Edgefield was one of their firmest models.

No Neck Pain, No Hip Pain on an Old Simmons Beautyrest Mattress.

His mattress is about 13-14 years old and had been slept on by their teen daughter for the first few years.

My daughter & son-in-law had a Simmons Beautyrest Black, and got rid of it after 3 years.  

It was a bad investment for them!

An investment group bought Simmons several years ago.

In fact, that same investment group also bought Serta.

Both brands are now junk, thanks to the memory foam upholstery.

Memory foam is specifically designed to cause a mattress to need frequent replacing. 

Today, it’s all about profits and not at all about quality.

Nothing Simmons makes today is even remotely close in quality to the mattress in your brother's guest bedroom.
