Which Mattress is Better, Latex or Innerspring with Latex?

If only it were that simple!

There are so many good and bad choices on either side of that isle...almost like standing at the podium looking out over the entire congressional body...only with more good choices than you have there.

 

An all latex mattress is more expensive than an innerspring...even one that is upholstered with latex.

An all latex mattress has always been considered the best you can buy, due to the longevity of latex and the longevity of the comfort that latex provides.

 

Name brand innerspring mattress don't use latex to upholster their mattresses. 

They use memory foam, which has proven itself to be the worst material ever invented for use in a mattress.

You'll find that last statement to be in stark contrast to what you'll hear from salespeople at most stores.

 

An All Latex mattress will work just fine for many people. 

For those with disc related back problems, that may or may not be the case....depending on your weight.

Generally, a disc issue, such as Herniated Discs, DDD (Degenerative Disc Disease), and bulging discs....even some scoliosis patients, will require the upward support of an innerspring mattress.

The severity of the problem in conjunction with body weight are the factors to consider when making that decision.

For instance, if the problem is mild and the person with it is reasonably light in weight, then an all latex mattress could be just fine.

The greater the severity and the heavier the person is, it's more likely that they will require an innerspring.

But even then, you'll want that innerspring to be upholstered with latex.

Latex is thee best upholstery material on the planet...and has been so for the last 100 years.

Mattress Needed for a Big Man with Discs Causing Back Pain.

Hi Pete,

After a week of reading countless reviews I was hoping you might be able to help me find a new mattress.

I'm just coming off surgery on my C6 and C7 discs. However, they are still causing me back pain.

I'm 6 ft., 275 lbs. and in my early 30's. But to complicate matters I like a soft bed. 

I swear, I have never in my life had a better night's sleep than when I'm traveling and I stay in Westin's and sleep on their Heavenly Bed. 

Thought of maybe buying one but then I read so many troublesome reviews and so this circle of confusion began.

I've been looking for Plush or Pillowtop as I enjoy that soft feel but is there a better option out there? 

And regardless of the type what are some of the best brands and models out there.

Desperately need a new mattress and totally confused on what I have read to date.

Hi Frank,

The good news is, you can have everything you need and want...and longevity that will hold up under a big man.

 

But first, you need to understand why you sleep so well at the Westin Hotel.

Their Heavenly bed is a Simmons Beautyrest, which features a pre-compressed, individually pocketed coil unit.

These coils move independently from each other, which contour to your body shape and maintain the natural alignment of your spine.

The pre-compressed, 9" coils in a 7" pocket, push up against your spine....keeping your discs well supported.

Unfortunately, the coils are made of raw steel, not tempered steel. That, along with inadequate upholstery material, translates into a short lived mattress.

Hence, all the bad reviews you've seen about Simmons Beautyrest. 

Complicating this, it your preference for a plush pillowtop.

A Simmons Beautyrest is made 'plush' by using a much thinner gauge wire to make the coils.

And, the first thing to show wear is the pillowtop part of the mattress.

All this adds up to a complete waste of money for anyone carrying a lot of body weight.

 

Now, back to the good news.

I have two options for you. The first will have the greater degree of surface comfort...and should last you close to 10 years.

The second option will be strong and last longer. It, too will be comfortable, although not quite as soft as option #1...but lasting more than 10 years.

Both are an excellent value. Only you can decide which is the better value for your needs and desires.

Both provide the same support you experienced at The Westin Hotel.

 

#1) The Simmons Beautyrest Black Series mattresses use a triple strand wire to make the coils in every other row of coils.

These are the strongest of all the Simmons Beautyrest mattresses.

I recommend the Simmons Beautyrest Black L-Class Medium, and a Pure Talalay Bliss 3" Plush Talalay Latex Topper to go on it.

Latex is and has been the best upholstery material for the last 100 years, providing excellent comfort and resiliency...resisting body impressions.

This mattress has the same type of coil system as used in the Simmons Beautyrest.

The coil count is higher and the double tempered steel make them stronger and longer lasting.

Advice Finding a Sealy Hotel Mattress.

I looked at the label and it was a Sealy something. 

I know I can’t buy a hotel mattress in a retail store but I also know from looking at mattresses that each store chain has the same mattresses under a different model names as “their brand” or “made just for us”.

Tuft and Needle Mattress Aggravating Back and Hip Pain.

The purpose of the latex topper is to provide surface comfort, pressure point relief and longevity to the mattress.

The purpose of the mattress is to provide spinal support.

If your disc related back problems are painful, a latex topper is not what will relieve that pain. 

It sounds like your mattress is not providing adequate support.

In short, you need a new mattress.

Adding a latex topper to a bad mattress is a waste of money, as it is not the solution to your problem.

A moot point, really.

There is NO “All Foam” mattress that is the right choice for a disc related back problem.

None, not even the best of them, provide the necessary push back support against the spine needed to relieve that kind of back pain, long term.

A pre-compressed, individually pocketed unit does the best job of support.

Even so, NO "All Foam" is right for anyone with disc related back problems.

I usually go on and on about how bad memory foam is and how good latex is, but you seem to know all that.
