A Simmons Beautyrest Mattress for a Larger Woman with a Very Old Bed.

The first is for a Beautyrest, as you requested.

Now, here is the alternative I mentioned...and what we use at home.

Made by Natura of Canada, Their Greenspring line also uses an individually pocketed coil unit.

The differences are:

There are more coils than in the Simmons Beautyrest.

Those coils are made of double tempered steel...The Beautyrest coils are not tempered, at all.

And, the upholstery is already natural Talalay Latex and contain no memory foam.

These do not require the purchase of a separate latex topper to make them more durable.

The most comfortable of their 5 models is the Plush EuroTop at the top of this next page.

If you add it all up, the Natura mattress is both, better made and less expensive.

The down side is the time it takes to get.

Because they have to travel from their factory in Quebec, they take from 3 - 4 weeks to get.

The Beautyrest latex topper takes about two weeks.

Should we go with an all Latex instead of the Simmons? 

We are not wanting a platform bed - more the traditional type, mattress set.  

Would be nice to not have to flip, but if the bed is good, we would okay with that.

Do you think we should go with all latex? 

If so, do those also have the box spring/bed frames?

Does the white glove delivery include the haul away of our old mattress? 

(I feel sorry for them, but can't wait for it to be hauled away. :-)

I recommend the low profile boxspring to go with this.

Otherwise, the bed will be too high...unless you want that.

The low profile boxspring will make it easier to get in and out of bed.

Hi Diane,

Measure the height of your bed from the floor to the top.

This mattress measures 13" and 2" for the topper.

A bed frame is 7" and the boxspring come 9" or 5.5"

Compare that to what you have, and try to match it up if you're happy with your current height.

 

Most people prefer to get in and out of bed easily.

Since your mattress is so old, it isn't likely to be as thick as most of today's mattresses.

So, there's another step you can take to lower it.

Since you need a new bed frame, they make those in low profile, as well.

A standard frame is about 7" high.

A low profile is more like 3" high.

Most stores that sell mattresses carry both.

 

Of course, there is almost no room to store anything under a low profile frame.

If you are sticking with a standard frame, I recommend "The Instamatic", made by Leggitt & Platt.

It'll be the last frame you'll ever need to buy.

The model number is 777...R or G.

The "R" means it has the wide rollers.

The "G" means it has Glides instead of wheels.

Most stores will have it with the wheels.

The glides are harder to find.

 

And, lastly, Simmons will provide you with a new frame.

It won't be an Instamatic, which usually runs a little over $100, but it will be adequate.

It is available standard and low profile...and it's included with the price of the mattress.

The delivery people will set it up when the deliver the mattress.

 

(What the delivery guys won't do, is unbolt it from a headboard, bolt the new one to a headboard, or take away the old frame)

 

You'll need to call me to order that mattress.

I need a new mattress for a queen size bed. I am 5'4 125 lbs my husband is 6.3' 250 lbs.

There's nothing wrong with being a stomach sleeper, as long as the mattress is firm enough.

The key to alleviating your sciatica pain is to keep your spine properly aligned.

You have worn discs in the small of your back. The nerves are being pinched by the bones.

Maintaining the natural alignment of your spine will prevent those nerves from being pinched, which will eliminate the sciatica pain that goes around the hip and down the leg.

 

Unfortunately, all of the name brands, that we've trusted over the decades, have gone bad.

That is to say, they've all been purchased by other companies, who are now  only interested in recouping the investment and turning a profit.

They do this with Memory Foam.

They spend millions of dollars to convince you that memory foam is the best thing since sliced bread...and it is, from their point of view. It causes a mattress to need frequent replacing.

 

Memory foam is the only upholstery material that is temperature sensitive.

What happens, the memory foam softens as it warms from the body heat you give off.

When it softens, you sink into it....throwing off the alignment of the spine.

When you have any sort of disc related back problems, it will only make it worse.

 

The diabolical part of all this, is that when you get out of bed, the memory foam will recover to a point that a necessary sustained impression needed to prevail in a warranty claim won't happen.

Instead of being able to exchange the mattress under the terms of the warranty, you have to buy new. If you don't know that it's the memory foam causing the problem, you will simply repeat the mistake...sometimes, over and over again.

The goal of the manufacturers who are using memory foam, is to sell more mattresses, more frequently, to the same people.

It's all about profit and has nothing to do with quality.

 

From a consumer's point of view, memory foam is the absolute worst upholstery material ever invented. It's an expensive and a painful mistake that you must avoid making.

 

The quality of the components, is what you need to look for.

Simply going to a mattress store and picking out a mattress that's comfortable won't work today,

as it had in years past. Most mattress stores are a sea of mattresses...all loaded with memory foam.

 

In your case, you will need an innerspring mattress that will provide push back support against your spine to keep the discs in place and to prevent your bulging discs from herniating.

Since your husband is a big man, those coils need to be strong.

The best upholstery material...the most comfortable and the most durable...is all natural latex.

 

An individually pocketed coil will provide firm, contouring support that will maintain the spine's natural alignment. Upholstery material that provides surface comfort that won't let you sink, is natural latex.

After giving this some thought, I'm sending links to two products. You'll want both.

First, is the mattress.

This is a Canadian made mattress, using double tempered steel, individually  pocketed coil system. The individually pocketed coils do a couple of things...they maintain the alignment of your spine and prevent the two of you from feeling each other move in the mattress.

This has the highest coil count available and the double tempered steel makes it very strong.

There are 5 models in this line, but I'm recommending the "Firm" model...which is too firm to sleep on comfortably.

But, it will hold a man your size for many years.

To soften the surface, only pure, all natural latex provides surface softness that provides relief of pressure point pain...and last a whole lot longer than any other type of upholstery material.

It will not negate the underlying firm support of the mattress.

The reason for doing it this way, is so that when the latex does wear out, which will take years, you then only need to replace the topper and not the mattress.

New Firm but Comfortable Mattress for Me and My Caveman.

My boyfriend and I are looking for a new mattress.

We’ve been sleeping on one he’s owned for over ten years.

It’s been flipped and spun so many times I’ve lost count. 

There’s a huge dip in the center causing us to both roll towards the middle in the night. 

I have woken up everyday, for awhile (years probably), with back and neck pain that seems to be getting worse by the day now.

He’s a bit of a caveman so if he could find a slab of rock to sleep on, he would.

Recently we both slept on a Stearns and Foster mattress that, based on your blog, 

I’m assuming was pre-Tempurpedic times — it was very comfortable and we both slept well.

Hi Jenn,

Since you've been reading the blog, you probably know that memory foam is thee thing to avoid.

Unfortunately, all of the once trusted name brands have gone bad...all using memory foam for the upholstery layers.

 

The best type of mattress is one with an individually pocketed coil system.

Each coil moves independently from the others, which does a couple of positive things.

1) The contouring support maintains the natural alignment of the spine....excellent support that does a great job of relieving back pain.

2) The coils a 9" tall, compressed into a 7" pocket, so that it always pushing back up against you.

3) Since the coils are not tied together, two people in the mattress won't feel each other move.

4) Even as it ages and wears, you will never roll together.

 

Simmons Beautyrest has used such a coil system since the 1920s.

But again, today's Simmons mattresses are upholstered with memory foam.

 

The mattress we sleep on at home, is the mattress I'm recommending to you.

The Natura of Canada Greenspring mattresses use that same coil system...with a couple of positive changes.

1) The coil count is higher than Simmons

2) The coils are stronger...made of double tempered steel, while the Simmons coils are not tempered at all.

A new latex mattress that is resistant to sagging.

Flip or Rotate our new Stearns and Foster Mattress?

Hi Ralph,

I'm always amazed at the bad information that comes out of the mouths of so many salespeople.

To be fair, I doubt that they do that for nefarious reasons.

More likely, they simply reiterate what they've been told to say...since they aren't terribly well trained.

It's those who tell them what to say, who are interested in selling more mattresses, more frequently to the same people, who are the ones with the black hearts.

The memory foam in the S&F mattresses will fail quickly.

And it's the memory foam, which returns when you get out of bed, that renders the warranty virtually worthless. 

 

Your new mattress is one sided and can't be flipped.

Rotating a mattress frequently, (Once a month}, is the best way to help your mattress wear evenly.

However, there is so much memory foam in the new S&F models, I'm afraid there will be no getting around your level of disappointment in a year's time.

The proper care of a mattress, under those conditions, gets to be pointless after a while.

I suggest using a waterproof mattress protector with every mattress.

A mattress comparable to my 25 year old Sealy Posturepedic.

Hi Ron,

Before presenting what we have to offer, let me tell you about the problems in the mattress industry.
Almost all hotels are featuring "Name Brand" mattresses....mostly, Simmons Beautyrest.
The advantage of the Simmons Beautyrest, is the individually pocketed coil unit, with each coil moving independently from one another.
This type of coil system contours to the shape of the body, which maintains the natural alignment of the spine.
Almost everyone finds this type of support to be the most comfortable.
Simmons does have a hospitality division, where you can buy them at wholesale prices.

The problem is with longevity.
Frankly, I don't understand why hotels would go to the expense of having to replace these mattresses every few years.
The coils in the Simmons Beautyrest are made of raw steel...not tempered steel.
But, the worst part is all the memory foam that is used in all of the mattresses made by all of the "Name Brands'.

Memory foam is the worst upholstery material ever invented.
It's sole purpose is to cause mattresses to need frequent replacing.
It feels good when new, but that changes quickly....beginning to change within months and shot within a few years.
The diabolical part of memory foam is that it returns enough, when you get off of the mattress as to never meet the criteria needed to get authorization to exchange it. It is designed to sell more mattresses, more frequently, to the same people.
AND, as if that weren't bad enough, it consists of 61 different chemicals...some of which, are toxic. Formaldehyde and Benzene, being two of the worst.
Memory foam creates a health hazard for anyone breathing in the toxic fumes from the off gassing that goes with it....your guests and staff.
Being a temperature sensitive material, it absorbs your body's heat and reflects it back to you. In short, it sleeps hot.

There is a much better way to go about all this. A way that costs less, is far more durable...and safe. You just have to know where to look.

I'm glad you contacted me about this.
Normally, I don't deal with hotels, directly, as they would normally go straight to one of the name brand manufacturers for this.  
And, you wouldn't want to buy from me or any other retailer, directly, either. The cost would be far greater than it needs to be.
So, I'll be directing you to the manufacturers. This will reduce your costs dramatically.
I've included the email addresses of the people you'll contact to complete your order.

The first is the Wolf Mattresses.
Wolf was established in 1873. It is the oldest mattress manufacturer in the country that has been continually owned by the same family.
I've been dealing with them for some years, now. The quality is high. The service is excellent. The prices are more than reasonable.

This mattress uses an individually pocketed coil unit...like the popular Simmons Beautyrest.
The differences are stark.
It's a two sided mattress, while all of the name brand mattresses are one sided. 
The steel, from which the coils are made, is tempered steel for greater resiliency and durability.
The upholstery is plant based polyurethane foam...not chemical based...and carries the CertiPUR certification for safety.
This plant based poly foam has none of the problems associated with memory foam.
This particular mattress is a bit unique and strikes me as the perfect choice for use in a hotel.
It allows you to accommodate anyone's idea of comfort.
It's plush on one side and firm on the other side. Normally, you would use it with the plush side up, as that works best for most people.
But, should you have a guest with a very bad back, who needs a firm mattress, your housekeeping staff can easily accommodate that guest, 
buy simply flipping the mattress over.
This mattress is much higher in quality than anything being produced by the name brand manufacturers.
With the name brands now owned by investment groups, profit...and not quality...is their focus.

But, that's not all.
The thing that breaks down the upholstery layers of any mattress, is moisture getting into the mattress.
THIS, happens normally through normal perspiration...not to mention the unspeakable things that people do to mattresses that don't belong to them.
To go along with these mattresses, I suggest a waterproof mattress protector.
But, not just any waterproof mattress protector...as many sleep hot and make crinkly noises.

Danican, a Denmark based company, makes the best waterproof mattress protector I've found...and I've tested several at home and with family.
Their Silver Tech model is made of natural cotton infused with silver, which is what keeps it sleeping cool. 
They fit on easily, and when washed repeatedly in hot water, it doesn't shrink. (Do Not Dry on High Heat).
More importantly, it doesn't fail.
It has been through the acid test...literally...by me and by a hotel in LA...The Ontario Airport Inn.
I suggest one for each mattress and some back up for when they are being laundered.
