Need a New Mattress and Pillow.

We've had our mattress a year and we're both waking up more tired and sore achy neck, back, hips, etc. 

The pain, each day, just gets worse!  

We tried a memory foam topper that worked for about two months and we finally had to get rid of that.

My husband is a large 6'1", a big guy.

I'm 5'6" medium build. I'm a side sleeper, he's a back sleeper, occasionally side.

Any recommendations?? and where do I go for pillow recommendations?  

My husband has a sore neck that won't go away and we think it's a combo of the mattress and pillow.

Back aches on a new Simmons Beautyrest Mattress.

My wife and I purchased a Queen size Simmons Beautyrest PressureSmart 2.0 Plush Pillow Top mattress from Mattress Firm this past April.  

We started having back aches after about 60 days and thought it was due to our exercise, age and outdoor activities. 

We are still dealing with the back pains and believe it has to be the mattress.  

The mattress is no longer within the 120 day guarantee.

We have finally decided it is time to change.  

Can you recommend a good mattress for us.

My wife is 5’4” 130lbs and I am 5’8” 160lbs.

The problem with your mattress is the memory foam upholstery.

A Mattress for Fibromyalgia, Osteoarthritis, Rheumatoid Arthritis and Osteoporosis.

I am 76 yrs. old and have been diagnosed with Fibromyalgia, Osteoarthritis, Rheumatoid Arthritis and Osteoporosis.  

I also have severe scoliosis.

Due to several episodes of blood clots, I have been on permanent Coumadin for 24 years and also have a blood filter implanted in the artery below my heart.

 

In 2006 I bought a Sealy Jacaranda Queen mattress and adjustable queen base/platform with motor.

 

For the last several years I have been suffering from back, hip, knee and shoulder pain.   

At times I suffer from a pinched nerve in my back.

All the doctors want to operate on my back, but with me on Coumadin and at my age, I feel the risks outweigh the benefits.  

 

I have found a chiropractor who is really helping my back and hips with stretching maneuvers.

 

Last week I almost bought a Simmons Beautyrest mattress to go on the base I already own.  

I have since read bad reviews on that mattress and am glad I didn't buy it.  

I have been told that I need a firm mattress because of my back, but need a soft mattress for my shoulders and hips.  I am confused.  

Also, I'm not a millionaire and can't afford a mattress that costs thousands of dollars.

 

To add to all of the above, my son thinks my back problems worsened when I got the adjustable bed.  

Do you have an opinion regarding this, as well?

Hi Betty,

An adjustable bed base is fine for sitting up to watch TV, but for sleeping, the bed needs to be flat in order to maintain your spine's natural alignment. It should be flat when you're sleeping.

 

The Sealy Jacaranda latex mattress was quite firm and should be ok for your back...but it's too firm for your other issues. 

While made as a one-sided mattress, you can flip that mattress over for more even surface support. 

 

If the mattress has worn, you can flip it over. 

The underside will provide all the firmness that your back requires.

A topper for a too firm mattress.

I’m 38, 170 pounds, and someone who has sore muscles often from going to the gym. 

In the last year or so I’ve been dealing with DDD/spinal stenosis and sciatica.

A mattress topper will help with the pressure points, which is why you’re tossing.

The firm mattress was a good choice for support, but you also need a measure of surface comfort. 

A soft mattress topper will provide that without sacrificing the underlying firm support.

Purchasing a Natura of Canada Greenspring Mattress.

There are 3 different types of foams used in the mattress industry.

Memory foam has proven to be the worst, over its 20-year history.

Polyurethane foam was the standard foam used since the 1970s.

Latex foam is and has been the best upholstery material for the last 100 years.

 

The foams used in the Natura of Canada Greenspring Mattresses are:

Natural plant-based polyurethane...'an inch of soft poly foam in the quilted cover and an inch of firm poly foam under the latex', just above the coils.

Natural Talalay Latex is in between the two poly foam layers.

The only one to avoid is memory foam. It’s the only one that is poor quality.
