Replacing a 10 Year Old Stearns and Foster Blisswood Mattress.

Hi Pete,
My husband and I bought our Stearns and Foster Blisswood mattress from you, 10 years ago. 
We are now hurting, literally. Now looking to replace it.  
Whether we should get a latex topper for immediate relief, a new mattress or both, we wanted your feedback.  
Right now, this mattress lays directly on a wood storage bed and is showing indentations.  
We find ourselves tossing and turning much more in the past few months.  
 
In our 40s stats:
Him:  5’11”, 175, in construction for 20 years.  Lean, strong, fit.  
He had ACDF surgery 2 years ago and is now starting to have lower back pain.  He's a side and back sleeper.
 
Me:  5’4”, 180, desk jockey.  Persistent lumbar pain on the right including hip soreness now.  
More side and stomach sleeper than back unless I have a pillow under my knees.  
 
While morning aches and stiffness are part of the aging process, this mattress is the culprit in recent months.  
Your expertise makes logical, philosophically and anatomical sense. 
But, given our different body types, we’re really lost.

Hi Jaime,
Your mattress has reached the limits of its life.
I have two good options for you.
 
Option #1 includes a latex topper. If going with this option, you might consider getting the latex topper first.
When it arrives, flip your mattress over and apply the topper.
The underside of your one sided mattress is firm and even. Adding the latex topper to the top won't help.
However, the trick of first flipping the mattress has worked well for many.

I’m in the market to buy a new mattress for my elderly father.

Happy Christmas!
I’m in the market to buy a new mattress for my elderly father.
He is 75 and in poor health. He complains of terrible back ache, and has much pain to lie totally flat. 
He needs to be propped up with lots of pillows and sleeps almost like half sitting up. On his back.
He weighs somewhere in the 190+ pound ballpark.
 
He says he likes a soft mattress. But I wonder if this isn’t adding to his back pain.
I would like a mattress that is as green as possible. No off-gassing and no gunk inside of it.
Do you have a recommendation?

Natura Greenspring Mattress and Latex Topper for my 300 lb. daughter with Fibromyalgia and Back Pain.

A Plush Latex Mattress Topper to Relieve Shoulder Pain.

Our king size mattress is, at least, 8 years old, probably older. 
I started getting shoulder pain from it, several months ago. 
It is so bad that I'm seeing an occupational therapist.

A Mattress in The UK for Upper and Lower Back Pain.

Hi Pete,
I have an upper back injury which cannot be fixed and must be managed. 
This involved the main ventricular nerve from the brain to be cut off from blood supply, causing paralysis from the neck down. 
I’ve suffered extreme muscle atrophy in my right shoulder muscles and peck muscle.
 
I was being taken into hospital due to either paralysis or pain.
It was so bad I couldn’t move quite frequently, and then we realized, our bed was almost 10 years old and probably wasn’t helping.
Wanting the best in support for my issue I bought a Tempur original elite! 
My upper back pain has practically gone, the best it’s been since before the accident. 
However, I have a new pain, somewhere I’ve never experienced pain in my 33 years... lower back pain! just above my butt! 
I figured this could be the mattress being too firm, so I purchased a softer one, the cloud, to try and get total relief. 
I’m 5ft and 8st 12lb. After two days, I was crippled in pain throughout my entire body. 
I was back to not being able to walk, my right side paralyzed, so back to the original. 
I feel in one breath it’s the best mattress I’ve had for my upper back injury, but in another, I feel I’m swapping pain to a different area. 
Maybe memory foam isn’t the correct setup for me. 
Clearly even though my size dictates I should use a soft mattress with support, that doesn’t agree with my injuries from 14 years ago. 
So I’ve now purchased a Dunlopillo latex orchid mattress to see if this may work better. 
I’m in the UK, so I’m not sure if you can recommend anything. 
The only other mattress I’ve tried with potential is the Somnus Alnwick, I believe spring, latex, mohair and wool is the setup. 
I like the comfort of the medium tension but have learnt what I like the feel of and what suits my injury are very different, so better to try a firm tension. 
Very difficult buying mattresses due to them not allowing returns for hygiene reasons at a lot of stores online.
Any help I’d appreciate if you have any experience of a similar situation and what type of mattress materials help.

Hi Kelly,
Despite all the hype to the contrary, memory foam is the absolute worst upholstery material ever invented.
Memory foam wears quickly and produces pain for most people, before too long after purchasing.
Step #1-Avoid mattresses made with memory foam.
 
In your case, an all foam mattress won't have the "pushback" support your spine requires.
The Somnus Alnwick mattress, made of coils and latex upholstery sounds like a good choice for your issues.
The coils are better support and latex is and has been the best upholstery material for the last 100 years.
 
Before buying that mattress, try it again. Go when you have plenty of time and take your pillow with you.
Spend time in each of your sleeping positions.
Keep in mind that a new mattress will initially feel a bit firmer than the floor sample.
It should break in within a couple of weeks.

Herniated Disks. Wake Up Sore and Stiff. Mattress Advice Needed.

I have an old king mattress and wake up everyday sore and stiff.

I’m a side and back sleeper and am on the heavier side with some lower back issues (a few herniated disks).

Back Pain on an Ashley Ellis Bay Mattress. Which Latex Topper?

Hi Kimberly,
The purpose of the latex topper is to provide surface comfort, pressure point relief and longevity to the mattress.
The purpose of the mattress is to provide spinal support.
If your disc related back problems are painful, a latex topper is not what will relieve that pain. 
It sounds like your mattress is not providing adequate support.
In short, you need a new mattress.
Adding a latex topper to a bad mattress is a waste of money, as it is not the solution to your problem.

A Simmons Beautyrest Mattress and Latex Topper to Relieve Sciatica and Back Pain.

Hi Pete,
My wife carries all her stress in her neck and shoulders. 
She holds all her tension in that area and gets headaches and muscle tension in those areas. 
She is 5'3" and around 120-125 lbs
I have sciatic issues. When I first got out of the military, I could barely walk.. SI joint issues and lower back issues.

Good Morning Paul,
The reason why you sleep so well on a Simmons Beautyrest mattress is due to the pre-compressed, individually pocketed coil system.
They use a 9” coil, compressed into a 7” pocket, so the coils are always pushing back against your spine.
The coils move independently from one another, providing contouring support that automatically adjusts to the shape of your body and maintains the natural alignment of your spine.
Worn discs pinch nerves, which is what causes your sciatica.
Having the vertebrae properly aligned is what keeps the nerves from being pinched.

NO “All Foam” Mattress is the right choice for a disc related back problem.

We are looking at an all foam king size mattress that has 9” high density foam base layer plus 3” firm top layer of latex, 
and made with CertiPUR-US foam.
The mattress ticking is soft and breathable with sustainable fibers including Tencel and Repreve.

I love a firm mattress due to some previous disc problems in my back.

I’ve never heard of that brand.
A moot point, really.
There is NO “All Foam” mattress that is the right choice for a disc related back problem.
None, not even the best of them, provide the necessary push back support against the spine needed to relieve that kind of back pain, long term.
A pre-compressed, individually pocketed unit does the best job of support.

Memory Foam Mattress or Topper for Spinal Stenosis

My brother, who is 73 years old, has severe spinal stenosis and I would Like to recommend one of your mattresses or memory foam toppers. 
From research I have learned that, generally, memory foam mattresses are able to reduce pressure points.
They are better than any other types of mattresses, according to the American Sleep Association. 
According to them, you want to stray from innerspring mattress, if you want to give your body proper back support.  
Could you, please, let me know your recommendations.

Hi Brian,
What you've learned is how to make the sale. The information you have is sales hype...and completely opposite of the truth.
 
The mattress industry has gone from concerning itself with making quality products, to maximizing profit. Memory foam is what they use for that.
The American Sleep Association is either corrupt, or clueless.
I do know that the people at Consumer Reports are clueless...and not, likely, corrupt.
It hardly matters, since the same bad information is the same from both.
 
Memory foam is 15-20 years old. In that time, it has proven to be the absolute worst upholstery material ever invented.
Memory Foam is the only upholstery material that is temperature sensitive...softening as it warms from your body heat.
As it softens, you sink into it. Memory foam isn't very resilient to start with, so within a couple/few months, you're sinking through it....
...at which time, it has lost all support and comfort.
 
I remember the first commercials for it, all those years ago, where a hand was pressed into the memory foam and removed, to show a hand print that lingered.
I remember thinking, "Who, in their right mind, would think that's a good idea?".
Well, like they say, tell a lie often enough, and it's perceived as true.
The tremendous amount of advertising and all of the sales hype, is what has created the demand for something that is nothing but pure junk. 
 
As if being a lousy product isn't bad enough, memory foam also creates a health hazard...off gassing the toxic chemicals from which it's made.
 
 
At this point, in our relationship, I have, either, gotten through to you...or, you figure I don't know what I'm talking about...
...since my advice is opposite to the misinformation you've received, thus far.
If the later, go your own way and I wish you luck. You're going to need it.
If the former, I'll need to know your brother's size...(height and weight)...in order to offer an appropriate recommendation.
