Over the last 4 years, I have gone through 5 mattresses.
I've tried Tempurpedic, Sleep Number, Serta i Comfort, Sealy Posturepedic and Simmons Beautyrest.
All have made my back pain worse, despite all the salesmen telling me that their mattress will help.
I'm a large man, 6' 3", 250 lbs, with herniated disc that cause me back pain.
You were recommended to me by a friend, who bought a mattress from you.
They tell me that you know your what you're talking about.
I trust him, so I'll trust you.
To complicate the issue, my wife is somewhat petite. She's 5' 7", weighing only 135 lbs.
She likes a softer feel, which has always been a problem for me.
Can you help me find something that will be good for both of us?
Thank your friend for me, for the referral.
I can, in fact, help you...as I have helped many like you with similar circumstances.
First, the problem you've had, is with mattresses upholstered with memory foam.
Despite all the hype to the contrary, memory foam is the worst upholstery material ever invented.
Memory foam is a temperature sensitive material that softens as it warms from your body heat.
While comfortable, at first, it quickly loses its initial comfort and support, within months of purchase.
The key to a successful purchase, is avoiding any mattress made with memory foam.
The mattress I'm recommending for you, is the same mattress my wife and I sleep on, at home.
We are, both, over 200 lbs. I have Herniated discs, bulging discs, and DDD, (Degenerative Disc Disease).
Despite all that, I sleep and wake with zero back pain...pain I use to live with constantly.
This mattress uses a double tempered steel, individually pocketed coil unit, which maintains the natural alignment of your spine. This type of coil system is key to relieving your back pain.
The double tempered steel coils and latex upholstery combine to provide a mattress that does the job you want it to do, do it for a very long time, and be comfortable enough for the curves of the female body.
Our mattress is more than 5.5 years old, and still in like new condition.
That mattress is The Natura of Canada Greenspring Ultra Plush.

At this moment, I am in the middle of a 100-night trial on a Sleep Number bed!
To me, it feels like I am "just dealing with it for a night or two camping" but that feeling may be because of my body.
First of all, I'm a very large woman, weighing close to 450 pounds.
I have a frozen shoulder, fibromyalgia, degenerative disc disease, spinal stenosis and severe osteoarthritis.
I sleep alone but I also have positional vertigo, so I sleep catty-corner so I never feel like I am falling.
I just got rid of a Cal King to get the Queen size sleep number bed.
I am happy with either size although the Queen feels too small for sleeping catty-corner.
Last October I stayed at a Worldmark by Wyndham resort for a week.
They had a Simmons Cape Breton Pillow top and I thought I was in seventh heaven.
I slept so well but I would love your input to find a bed that works for me.
This sleep number bed is certainly not working!
I would love to hear from you.
I guess you’ve figured out, by now, that a Sleep Number is the wrong mattress for you. Quite frankly, it’s the wrong mattress for most people. An air mattress is like a waterbed, relying on displacement rather than providing real support. The Simmons Beautyrest mattresses use a pre-compressed, individually pocketed coil unit, which provides upward and contouring support, which maintains the natural alignment of your spine. It’s this, that makes those hotel Beautyrest mattresses so comfortable. Unfortunately, their coils are made of raw steel, not tempered steel. Under your weight, they won’t hold up well nor last very long. I have a mattress that is made with the same kind of coil system as the Simmons Beautyrest, having a higher coil count, and those coils made of double tempered steel. Also, the upholstery is Natural Talalay Latex, which is far more resilient than the polyurethane foam used in a hotel grade Beautyrest...which is more resilient than the memory foam used in retail grade Beautyrests. The Natura of Canada Greenspring is the mattress I’m recommending. I have had a number of customers sporting your same weight, and this is what works, world well, and lasts a long time. Specially, it’s their Firm model and a Pure Bliss 3” Plush Natural Talalay Latex Topper to go on it.
The Firm mattress is for durability and the Plush Latex Topper is for surface comfort. The topper will need replacing every few to several years, but not the mattress. The only downside to this, is the wait time. The factory is currently closed, due to the Covid-19 pandemic. They are scheduled to reopen on May 4th. It’ll take 3-4 weeks after that to receive the mattress.
I've read a ton of your suggestions & it really seems you take the time to think about what would work for each consumer instead of just offering 1 blanket bed...imagine, honesty from a mattress salesman...amazing!
So, thanks in advance.
My question is twofold.
My husband & I are in the market for a new mattress after a Simmons mattress stopped supporting us properly.
My husband is 6'4" 230 lbs & a side-sleeper. I am 5'7", 123 lbs & sleep on my back or stomach.
So, needless to say, we span both the weight spectrum & the sleep position spectrum.
From what I've read, it seems we both need a highly-supportive/firm mattress with a more plush top.
I've seen your suggestions for a firm mattress for support with a latex topper for comfort, for longevity.
Is this what you suggest for us?
If so, what firm mattress do you suggest for us being that my husband is larger than the average adult?
Also, do topper brands differ & if so what should I look out for/purchase?
If you have a different suggestion than the topper/mattress combo please let me know.
Secondly, I haven't seen you suggest air mattresses at all.
About a year ago, we stayed at a resort and really enjoyed a select number bed while we were there.
We have considered buying one of those until I found your blog.
I wondered what your thoughts were about those mattresses.
If they are adjustable shouldn't they provide significant longevity? If not, why not?
Maybe I'm missing a key problem such as mold or lack of air-tight integrity?
Thanks so much, Britney
Thank you for your kind words.
With air mattresses, like anything else, it feels good when it's new.
With so many complaints about the memory foam padding flattening, valves and bags leaking, it just seems like too much money for an air mattress with so many problems.
Also, displacement is NOT proper support for your spine.
The firmer mattress and latex combination works incredibly well, for the purpose of buying a bed that feels good later in years, as it did when it was new. Latex is extremely resilient, as well as comfortable.
The only latex to avoid is that which is coming from China.
It's the only latex that I've heard complaints about...not surprising, given their lack of quality control on just about everything they export.
The Simmons Beautyrest Black L-Class in Medium Firm is one I recommend for a large person and a great choice when adding a Pure Bliss 2" or 3" Plush Natural Talalay Latex Topper.
Your husband is a big man, but not overweight for his height.
It's a funny thing...I'll hear more from women, at half the husband's weight, complain about body impressions.
The flair of a woman's hip is point on the mattress that will show wear first, and a point in the body that gets sore.
