Hi Pete,
My husband and I are looking for a new mattress.
We’ve been sleeping on a very old one he’s owned long before we even met.
It’s been flipped and spun so many times I’ve lost count.
There’s a huge dip in the center causing us to both roll towards the middle in the night.
I have woken up everyday, for years, with back and neck pain that seems to be getting worse by the day.
Recently, I’ve begun waking up with a sore ear, due to the pillow now I assume.
My boyfriend does not seem to have any those issues but we both toss and turn in the night.
I am 5’4”, 120 lbs and sleep mostly only sides and stomach, sometimes my back.
He is 5’7”, 185 lbs and sleeps mostly on his back and sides.
He’s a bit of a caveman so if he could find a slab of rock to sleep on, he would.
He likes a firm mattress. I like firm as well but with some added comfort.
Any suggestions for a firm but comfortable mattress that will relieve my back pain?

Hi Jenn,
Since you've been reading the blog, you probably know that memory foam is thee thing to avoid.
Unfortunately, all of the once trusted name brands have gone bad...all using memory foam for the upholstery.
The best type of mattress is one with an individually pocketed coil system.
Each coil moves independently from the others, which does a couple of positive things.
1) The contouring support maintains the natural alignment of the spine....excellent support that does a great job of relieving back pain.
2) The coils a 9" tall, compressed into a 7" pocket, so that it always pushing back up against you.
3) Since the coils are not tied together, two people in the mattress won't feel each other move.
4) Even as it ages and wears, you will never roll together.
Simmons Beautyrest has used such a coil system since the 1920s.
But again, today's Simmons mattresses are upholstered with memory foam.
The mattress we sleep on at home, is the mattress I'm recommending to you.
