Hi Pete,
I (60F) and my husband (61M) are in need of a new mattress set.
We replaced our 20 year old Chattam and Wells firm mattress (due to pressure pain) with their plusher mattress about 5 years ago and it’s been downhill since.
Our bed dips badly on both sides and we are desperate for a good night's sleep.
This set has not lived up to our expectations.
My husband is 5’10” 230 lbs with a bad back. He also has some heart issues.
He is mainly a side sleeper. I am 5’4” 191 lbs with hip and shoulder pain and some neck issues.
I am a side/stomach sleeper. He sleeps hot, I sleep cold.
Recently we traveled and stayed at a LaQuinta.
To our surprise we both slept great! No pain! And we both slept through the night.
Now we realize our problem isn’t age related. It's mattress related.
We are on a mission to replace our mattress.
I know we can purchase the mattress that LaQuinta uses but is that advised?
I believe it was a medium firm, tight top. They are currently having a great sale.
And they even have the moveable platform base. Is that recommended?
I'm definitely not a fan of pillow top mattresses.
We currently have a memory foam topper to help with pressure points.
I’m not a fan of that, either.
Would love to hear what you would suggest for us.
Thanks, Kelly
Good Morning Kelly,
20 years ago, it was difficult to buy a bad mattress.
Back then, memory foam could only be had through Tempur-Pedic.
Today, most mattresses are upholstered with memory foam…now that all of the name brands have been sold. Tempur-Pedic owns Sealy and S&F. An investment group bought Simmons and Serta…all using memory foam to enhance profits by making the consumer a frequent buyer.
LaQuinta features Simmons Beautyrest.
The problem is that the mattress you slept on may be an older mattress with no memory foam in it. Any new mattress you buy from them will have memory foam, which will bring you around to where you are today within a couple of years or so.
The mattress most like the older mattresses used in hotels is:
The Wolf Tulah Luxury Plush Eurotop Mattress
This mattress uses the same components used it that hotel mattress, an individually pocketed coil system for support and polyurethane foam for comfort.
UPDATE!…This Wolf Mattress Has Been Discontinued.
We are pleased to offer you a higher quality mattress from Eco-Terra.
This mattress provides the same support with an upgrade in upholstery.
The higher quality upholstery provides greater comfort and longevity.

My first choice for anyone the size of your husband, is a mattress upholstered with latex foam…the most durable of all the upholstery materials for the last 100 years.
Latex is cushy, but doesn’t allow you to sink. The feel it creates is one of Floating.
We carry a brand that use pocketed coils for support and latex upholstery.
The Natura of Canada Greenspring Mattresses are all on the firm side, even their ultra plush model.
These mattresses will give you the longevity you had been used to.
Click on this link to view that lines of mattresses.
The Natura mattresses come with white glove delivery.
The Eco-Terra mattress arrives via FedEx.
I’m not a fan of adjustable bed bases.
Their therapeutic value is minimal and with the head raised, all of your body weight shifts to a central point in the mattress, just under your butt.
THIS spot in the mattress is where it will wear first…and much quicker than when your weight is more evenly distributed. It’s a lot to spend for so little benefit.
Your body’s natural alignment should be maintained when sleeping…for that, flat is best.
If you need a new foundation, I recommend this one from Magniflex:
Everything we carry comes with Free Delivery
4 Interest Free Bi-Monthly Payments with AfterPay
Thanks, Pete
A waterproof mattress protector will extend the life of any mattress, keeping it clean and dry.
