Phil Writes:

Hi Pete,
I happened upon your web site researching non-toxic and/or organic mattresses (GOTS, GOLS, OEKO-TEX.
Our current mattress is 21 years old Stearns and Foster, so we need something very soon.
Did some shopping yesterday and was tempted by a $2800 medium Stearns & Foster as well as a medium $2200 Tempur-Pedic.
The salesman said they do not outgas any toxics, but I'm not sure I can trust that.
Buying the "right" mattress is definitely more difficult than buying a new car, especially if you're trying to avoid toxic materials and also get the right price, support, comfort, durability, warranty, etc.
It is a very daunting challenge with a dizzying number of brands and "models" to choose from!
I'm also trying to avoid buying without first seeing the mattress and lying on it.
Any guidance could be very helpful.
Thanks, Phil
Hi Phil,
21 years ago, it was nearly impossible to buy a bad mattress.
Today, it's equally impossible to buy a good one.
Most stores are a sea of mattresses upholstered with toxic memory foam.
Memory foam consists of 61 different chemicals, some of which are highly toxic.
That includes Sealy, Serta, Simmons, Stearns & Foster and Tempurpedic.
All of the name brands have been sold to investors who are using memory foam.
Sleep Number and many off brands use memory foam, as well.
That salesman lied to you.
Best advice?
Avoid any mattress upholstered with memory foam.
That will narrow your choices, considerably.
Thanks, Pete
VERY IMPORTANT:
Keeping your mattress clean and dry will increase its longevity.
We recommend our Organic Cotton Waterproof Mattress Protector.
