Hi Pete,
I am in need of a great mattress.
I’m a 68 year old woman 5'4" 138 lbs., who has low back and shoulder pain.
Recently, it seems my should pain is worse while I try to sleep.
I looked at consumer reports but I still do not know what kind of bed would be best:
Soft, medium or firm: Foam: Innerspring: Hybrid???
I cannot remember when I bought my last mattress.
It was a queen size Sealy Posturepedic, but gave it to my daughter recently.
I do have a husband who flips and flops so much and pulls the covers.
We are now in two twin beds, which is better, except the beds are not good quality.
(They had been only used for occasional guests- didn’t want them to stay to long 😁)
We do want to stay close so that is another piece to this puzzle.
Can you please help me? I’d be forever grateful.
Sincerely, Suzanne
Hi Suzanne,
An old Sealy Posturepedic used an interlocking coil system.
This would have made your husband’s moving easy to feel.
Motion transfers through both, the mattress and box spring.
A king size has two box springs, so movement doesn’t transfer from one to the other.
A king size takes up no more space in the bedroom than your two twins.
Being a much larger mattress, it’s more difficult to feel him move...as motion has to travel further.
Change the coil system from an interlocking coil to an individually pocketed coil unit, and motion from one is rarely felt by the other.
Since you bought that Sealy mattress, much has changed in the mattress industry...and not for the better.
Sealy was sold to Tempurpedic.
All of the name brands that you could once trust for quality, have been sold to investors, who are now focused on profits and not quality.
The item that has caused this dramatic reduction in quality, is memory foam.
Memory foam is the worst upholstery material ever invented.
It’s a temperature sensitive material that softens as it warms from your body heat.
It’s not very resilient to start, and loses the little resiliency it has rather quickly.
Memory foam is specifically designed to cause a mattress to need frequent replacing....and not under the terms of the warranty.
Consumer Reports is not simulating body heat when testing mattresses.
Subsequently, their conclusions are all wrong.
While memory foam is the worst upholstery material, latex is and has been the best upholstery material for the last 100 years...most resilient, producing the longest lasting surface comfort.
(Even so, not all latex is the same. Chinese made latex has fillers added. This cheapens the quality and durability of the latex, which reflects in the price.)
Your physical ailments are both, interior and exterior.
You can’t buy one mattress that addresses both problems for any length of time.
So, your solution lies in two parts...the mattress for spinal support and a soft topper to address your exterior issues.
I, too, have both...back problems and a torn rotator cuff in my shoulder.
So, I’m recommending for you, the same sleep system my wife and I sleep on at home.
Both products are extremely high quality.
The mattress uses an individually pocketed coil system.
Not only does that allow you and your husband to sleep on the same mattress, that type of coil unit contours to the shape of the body, maintaining the natural alignment of the spine, which relieves chronic back pain.
That mattress is the Natura of Canada Greenspring Ultra Plush model.

Due to the high quality of the components, this mattress is not as soft as it sounds.
Certainly, not soft enough for your shoulder pain.
You’ll add to that mattress, a Suite Sleep Pure, All Natural Vita Talalay Latex Topper.
This is the softest, highest quality latex on the planet.

This mattress comes with white glove delivery.
Delivery includes set up in your bedroom and removal of your old mattress set.
The latex topper arrives via UPS.
Delivery is free and there’s no sales tax.
