Stain on Mattress Will Void the Warranty.

Hello Pete,
I found your website and have a question regarding my pillow top that is sagging.
I have a tech coming by to inspect the sag on the mattress. 
I’m sure the sag is enough to get me a replacement. 
However, I have this really light line of what seems to sweat stain UNDER the mattress.
 
The thing is, I’ve had a mattress protective cover under my sheets since I’ve purchased the mattress.
It has never come off, and no stains are visible on the top or sides of the mattress.
 
My worry is this stain line under the mattress is going to cause a void in my warranty - even though I have had the protector with no stains on top/sides.
 
What are your thoughts?

Hi Chase,
The stain on the mattress will void the mattress’ warranty, regardless of having a mattress protector on it.
If the mattress protector is waterproof, some brands advertise that they will warranty the mattress if the protector fails.
However, I’ve never heard of a consumer prevailing in such a claim.
What brand mattress protector do you have?

Sealy Mattress that we Purchased in 2015.

Hello Pete,
I found your site while looking into our Sealy mattress that we purchased in 2015.  
Since then I've had significant ongoing issues, skin rashes, fatigue, irritability, mood swings and general unwell feeling.
I've been to many doctors and explored all avenues I could but now I believe it's due to the mattress.  
I'm 5' 8'' and about 140 lbs. He's about 6' and 165 lbs.
What do you recommend for replacement?  
Also, is there any way to know for sure what was in this particular mattress?

Hi Li,
Sealy was purchased by Tempurpedic in 2013.
All of their mattresses are upholstered with memory foam.
Memory foam is made of 61 different chemicals, some of which are highly toxic.
You are, no doubt, reacting to the chemical off gassing.
Some people are more sensitive to these chemicals than others.
 
Since you are, both, so slender, either of these Pocketed Coil/ Latex Hybrid Mattresses will work well for you.

Simmons Beautyrest World Class Ansley Eurotop Plush Mattress.

Hi Austin,
Simmons was sold to investors, who now upholster every Beautyrest mattress with memory foam.
They didn’t use memory foam when the mattress you asked about was made.
The difference is the longevity.
Memory foam is specifically designed to cause a mattress to need frequent replacing.
When that Ansley mattress was made, Simmons used polyurethane and latex foams.
 
While Simmons makes nothing that will satisfy you, I have a mattress that will.
The Tulah Plush Eurotop Mattress from Wolf, uses the same type of coil system...
the same gauge of wire used in the Plush Beautyrests...and upholstered with polyurethane and latex foams....and NO Memory Foam. It will produce the feel...the support and comfort you're looking for.

3rd Mattress in 3 Months. Back Pain.

I had a Dormia mattress for many years, which I loved.
But like anything else, it eventually wore out and had to be replaced.
Since then, I'm on my 3rd mattress in 3 months. All are causing back pain I've never had before.
I can't live with this pain. I need a mattress that is as good as my old one.
I'm 5' 7" and weigh 200 lbs.
What would you recommend?

Hi Mary,
The best of what I'm recommending for you, is The Natura of Canada Greenspring Ultra Plush Mattress.
This is the mattress we have at home.
Due to the quality of the components being so high and so resilient, this mattress is not as soft as it sounds.
But, it is quite comfortable...and extremely supportive....not to mention that the longevity is as good as your old Dormia.

Replacing a Sealy Reflexion Latex Mattress.

We currently have a king size -Reflexion latex foam mattress Venice Beach by Sealy.
We both have loved it, but it is 12 years old.   
I have seen that Sealy has been bought out.

Hi Denise,
There’s a couple of ways to go about this.
To answer your question, there are two mattresses that I’d recommend.
Both are all latex...natural latex.
Your Venice Beach is comprised of synthetic latex and polyurethane foam on top.

Replacing a 20+ year old Simmons Beautyrest World Class Fairfax Pillow Top Mattress.

My wife and I have a 20+ year Simmons Beautyrest World Class Fairfax Pillow Top mattress.  
It has been an excellent mattress and I still love it and think it is perfectly fine.  
My wife thinks it needs to be replaced because you can see the indentations our bodies in the pillow top.
In a perfect world I would buy the same mattress or get this one rebuilt. 
I don’t think either of those two options are available.
 
I’m 5’6” 190 lbs., my wife 5’3” 150 lbs.  
My wife loved that the mattress did not move when I rolled over or had a restless night.  
I love how comfortable this mattress is.  It seemed to have a firm support while still being plush with the pillow top.
 
I’ve read your posts concerning the sale of Simmons and the use of memory foam in the new mattress; very informative.
What mattress would you suggest that would be the closest to what we have?

Hi Stuart,
If your wife is sleeping well, waking rested, in no pain...tell her to forget the aesthetics.
You replace a mattress when one of the above 3 criteria are not being met.
Body impressions, alone, are NOT a reason to buy a new mattress.
 
But, women are built differently from men. You may have noticed.
Being curvier, they tend to be more sensitive to changes in a mattress over time.
Their usual sensitive area is at the hip. 
 
If she isn’t sleeping well, that’s a good reason to replace it.

Mattresses for Our Son and for My wife and I.

Hi Pete,
I've been reading your blog posts and everything I've read makes sense.
I need a mattress for my 3 year old son and have to figure out what to do about the mattress my wife and I sleep on.
We will be putting our son on a queen size, which will also be used as a guest bed on occasion.
I want to make sure it has no chemical off gassing.
 
My wife and I bought a Stearns and Foster mattress, shortly before our son was born.
We can feel that it has lost its support and comfort when we are in the bed.
But there is no visible wear showing when we get out of bed.
And just like you've said, we were not able to prevail in a warranty claim.
As much as I hate to replace it now, I'm afraid it has become necessary.
My wife and I are not heavy people.
 
What would you recommend for both bedrooms?

A Mattress for Severe Scoliosis.

I have a severe "S" curve scoliosis with a fused spine and have gone through so many beds.  
I cannot sleep on a foam mattress, as they have no support. 
I'm 59 115 LB. I was sleeping on mattress with pillow top, then latex mattress, then air bladder. 
Now, I'm sleeping on just a box spring with pad and blankets.
Can you recommend anything?

Given your slender build, an expensive mattress is not necessary.
What is necessary, is that it be firm.
