Replacing a Simmons Beautyrest Mattress from 2005.

I am in the market to replace my 2005 Simmons Beautyrest Cashmere pillowtop, Queen size mattress.  
It seems to be sagging toward the middle of the bed.
 
I am a large lady, 5'6, 300 lbs., my boyfriend weighs approx. 200 lbs.
I am a side sleeper with degenerative disc issues.  
 
I've read your Mattress 101 & 102 blog, I appreciate all your great advice!!  
 
Please advise what mattress I should be looking at purchasing.

Hi Denise,
Simmons made a great line of mattresses, back then.
They have, since, been sold to investors who are using memory foam upholstery.
The point of the memory foam is to cause a mattress to need frequent replacing.
Nothing Simmons makes, today, is even close to the quality of yours.
 
But, there is a mattress that will hold up well under your weights and provide the same type of support that you’ve been used to.

Replace a Sealy Posturepedic with an Old Fashioned Two-Sided Mattress.

I purchased a Sealy Posturepedic Island Manor mattress for our guest room, in 2006, and my guests rave about it. 
I’m actually not replacing it but furnishing another guest room and would like as similar a mattress as possible.

Hi Amy,
There’s nothing from Sealy that even comes close to that older Posturepedic.
Since Tempur-Pedic bought Sealy in 2013, everything since is upholstered with memory foam...all junk.
Your old Sealy is upholstered with polyurethane.

Replacing a 10 year old Sealy Posturepedic South Court Mattress.

I'm just starting to look for a new mattress, which is how I found your blog and website.
I'm replacing a 10 year old Sealy Posturepedic South Court Plush.
It's, just now, starting to become uncomfortable.
I'd like a mattress that feels like this one did and one that is equally well made.
My initial research tells me that Sealy, now owned by Tempurpedic, makes nothing like it today.
I don't want any mattress with the memory foam used today.
I'm petite, just a little over 100 lbs. and I sleep alone.

Hi Mina,
You're right! There is nothing made today that is the same as your old South Court Posturepedic.
The Wolf Hybrid Tulah, while not made the same, has a very similar feel to that mattress when it was new.

Poor Sleep on a Tempur-Pedic Mattress.

Three years ago, my husband and I purchased the Tempur-Pedic split king adjustable bed. 
We have the cool top medium firm.  
Neither one of us gets a good night's sleep on this bed.
It was too expensive for us to ditch, so we continue to get night after night of poor sleep.  
I tried a 2” foam topper on my side to see if that helped but I still didn’t feel comfortable.  
 
Do you have a topper solution?  
I prefer a softer bed, my husband has terrible back issues and prefers a firm mattress.

Hi Vicki,
Despite all the hype to the contrary, memory foam is the worst upholstery material ever invented.
Fortunately for you, that mattress is not all memory foam.
The memory foam is only on the top.
Flip your mattress over to the high density poly foam side.
Do that today, and you will both sleep better tonight.
 
Use the topper you bought for your side, which I’m guessing is also memory foam, until your latex topper arrives.

Replacing a 14 year old Simmons Beautyrest Mattress.

Hi Sally,
You should be worried.
The quality of all of the name brands mattresses have dropped dramatically, since they began using memory foam.
However, there is a way around all that.
The mattress to buy, is The Simmons Beautyrest Platinum Gibson Grove in Luxury Firm.

A Mattress for 2- 400 Lb. People

Hi Tracy,
My recommendation comes in two parts....a firm mattress and a plush latex topper.
Latex is both, comfortable and resilient. 
A latex topper will absorb much of your body weight, adding to the longevity of the mattress.
As the years go by, you'll replace the latex topper from time to time...as necessary.
But you won't have to replace the mattress for many years.
The mattress is extremely strong, using a very high coil count and very strong coils, made of double tempered steel.

I wouldn’t characterize it as overly soft.
