Hi Mike,
They are not pillowtops.
The extra firm has stiffer upholstery than the medium.
Both use the same strength coil unit.
Both are upholstered with memory foam.
So, a latex topper is necessary for those mattresses to keep their shape.
We recommend the Pure Bliss Plush Natural Talalay Latex Topper to go on it.
If it's just you, the 2" topper is all you need to preserve the mattress.
If there is a female involved, I recommend the 3".
The 3" is more comfortable for a woman's hip, then the 2".
If there is a female to consider, I suggest going with the Medium mattress vs. the extra firm....for the same reason.
