What is the absolute best mattress in the world for us?

Hi Pete,
My wife is 65, 2 hip replacements, fibromyalgia and all the pain that goes with it.  
What is the absolute best mattress in the world for us?
Ours is a story you've heard many times so I'll make it brief. 
We have tried everything, including tempurpedic, and nothing works. 
We just got rid of another nightmare memory foam topper. 
I am 70, in reasonably good shape, 6'2" and 210 pounds. 
I'm fed up with too firm or too soft mattresses and combinations that are causing pain and sleep loss.

Hi, Dave,
You haven't tried everything. You may have tried everything this industry is pushing.....promising you the moon in the process.
One of the major problems in this industry is in the over-selling of continually worsening quality.
When you no longer have anything decent to offer, you have to make what you do have sound better than it is. This BS has totally gotten out of hand.
And the buying public are making things worse by trying to buy "the best mattress in the world", or "the mattress of my dreams", or "wanting to sleep on a cloud", or, generally, just thinking of a mattress as if it were meant to be a luxury item.
 
What you need isn't anything different than the next guy...reasonably firm support with a sleeping surface that is comfortable enough to allow you to sleep deeply...providing a restful, recuperative night's sleep.
The major problem, today, is that finding a mattress like that is easy....while not being able to finding one that will do that for more than a year or two.
 
If you equate expense with quality, you're now wondering why expensive mattresses have so little longevity. 
The prices you're being charged is not because the mattresses are expensively made. 
They cost what they do because everybody making and selling them are making a killing.
Did you happen to notice how many mattress stores there are? 
And, no matter where you live, you're being bombarded by mass media mattress marketing...TV, Radio, Newspaper...all very expensive. 
I'll give you just one guess as to who ultimately pays for all that advertising.
 
Ok, enough of this tirade. 
But, a lot of people will read this...many making the same mistakes you've made...making them over and over again...when all it takes to avoid getting snookered is a common sense perspective.
If you want to stop fooling around with all the hyped mattresses that are nothing but pure junk, and want to get into a high quality mattress that will provide excellent support, comfort and longevity, then you'll want to consider the mattress we use at home.

Warranty Problems. Back and Hip Pain on a Plush Simmons Beautyrest Mattress.

Hi Pete,
My Simmons Beautyrest plush mattress sagged more than 1 1/2 inches after only a few years.  
The store where I bought the mattress had an inspector come out and verify this.  
Because it was within the manufacturer's warranty period, I was issued ~$1000 credit to pick out a new Simmons mattress.  
So, I paid the difference in price. They fought me tooth and nail on price matches and a free boxspring promotion given by Simmons.
Because the store said none of that applied because this is a warranty replacement.  
We worked through that, but now the new Simmons mattress is causing just as much back and hip pain as my old one.  
The inspector came back out and this bed is fine.
The store said I could do a re-select but they will charge me a 25% restocking fee and shipping costs.  
Plus, there are no other Simmons beds that this store carries that I'm interested in. 
I have two questions:
1)  Is it true that a store that has a matching price policy doesn't have to match the price on a warranty purchase? 
(There was over a $600 difference than what other stores sell the mattress for.)
and
2) If I again pay more money and re-select, am I allowed to purchase a different brand, say Serta?  
And if so, will my new Serta mattress be covered for its full warranty like a new purchase would?

Hi Anne,
You got screwed on this from the start. But, you only have yourself to blame. You didn't bother to read the mattress' warranty card.
If the factory authorizes an exchange, then they will send you a replacement at NO CHARGE...just delivery costs.
The $1000 credit was the retailers way of turning a service call into a sale. 
Lots of retailers are getting away with that today, because nobody bothers to read the warranty card.
 
Your initial mistake was to get a plush Beautyrest, which uses a very thin wire coil, which almost always ends up in a warranty claim. 
You then replaced it with the same thing....with all the same problems.
The new mattress has more memory foam, which only made matters worse.
  
On my website, you'll noticed that we do not offer any of their plush models...and for that reason.
1) There are plenty of stores that offer great deals with one hand and take them away with the other. Read the fine print in their ads.
2) That 25% restocking should also tell you that you could easily wind up with a mattress that someone else used and returned. 
The one you have now, could very well be one of those.
     
Also, Serta makes a poor quality product. You'd just be going from the frying pan to the fire.
 
You've already been screwed by this retailer of yours.
You've already noticed that their prices are too high.
Why would you continue to do business with them? Are you expecting a different result?
 
I suggest that you concern yourself, less about the worthless warranties and these comfort exchange scams, and more about the quality of the mattress.
I recommend buying The Simmons Beautyrest Platinum Series Gibson Grove Luxury Firm Mattress Only. (Your boxspring is fine).

Natura of Canada Greenspring Mattress Information.

However, I'm concerned because I've never before heard of that brand. How long have they been in business?
From what you have said about them, they appear to be high quality.

Natura is a small manufacturer, established in the 1990s.
 
I don't know why this information is important to you.
When you consider that much older manufacturers...like all of the name brands, who were recently sold to investors...no longer make high quality products, 
I have to wonder what the point is. 
It means nothing with Stearns & Foster, for instance, which was established in 1846 and is now making mattresses that are nothing more than expensive junk.

Two Sided Stearns and Foster Blakely Mattress Replacement.

I bought a Stearns and Foster Blakely mattress in 2003. 
Two years ago I bought a new replacement from another mfg due to S&F being out of my price range. 
This mattress is already sagging where I sleep.
What mattress would be similar to the Blakely since I don't think they make it anymore. 
It is a two sided mattress that can be flipped, no pillow top.?

Hi Eileen,
Stearns & Foster hasn't made a two sided mattress since 2003. You got one of the last.
And, since Tempurpedic bought them, it's been more than 5 years since they've made a mattress that I could recommend to anyone.
The problem with today's mattresses is the memory foam upholstery, which is purposefully designed to wear quickly.
However, I do have a mattress that I'm sure you will like...one that will hold up well and contains NO Memory Foam.
The Brolynn Plush is an Old Fashioned Two Sided Mattress that can be flipped....using similar materials as your old S&F mattress.

Simmons Beautyrest Legend Luxury Firm Mattress.

Hi Pete,
My husband and I have been shopping for a new mattress and we're considering the Simmons Beautyrest Legend Luxury Firm.
We have a 5 year old Stearns and Foster pillowtop, right now, that started out great but is now sagging and too soft for both of us.
Last July, I herniated a disc (C7) and found sleeping on the Simmons Shakespeare Firm that we have in our guest room more comfortable. 
For months I could only sleep on my back and this provided me the most support and chance of rest. 
Now that I've healed, somewhat, I am able to sleep on my side and find that the Simmons Shakespeare Firm is too hard on my shoulder. 
So, I end up switching positions a lot. 
I have read a lot on your website, googled Simmons, and can't seem to find out much info on the Legend series. 
I was told by the salesperson that this line is the best Simmons makes. 
I believe it offers the best, in terms of stability when sharing a bed (partner doesn't feel it when the other moves). 
It feels firm, not particularly "comfy", like one gets with a plush or pillowtop. But, it's softer than the Shakespeare I have at home. 
What is your opinion of the Legend Series?  
I hesitate to get sucked into that because of what we've experienced with our Stearns and Foster. 
I worry about its longevity, especially considering that they're asking more than $4000.00 for it.
My husband is 6'3 235 lbs, I am 5'5, 125 lbs. 
He prefers a slightly softer mattress than I do, but clearly has more body mass so it seems like he could benefit from something firmer. 
He does not sleep well on our guest room bed, the Simmons Shakespeare Luxury Firm. It's too hard for him.
What do you recommend given our situation? We are looking for a king size bed.

Hi Sue,
The Legend is an exclusive for the store where you saw it.
As an exclusive, you can't shop it anywhere else. Hence, the outrageous price.
In fact, that retailer is one of the most expensive places to buy a mattress.
 
The Legend is NOT Simmons best. 
It is no more than a Platinum Series Beautyrest with a couple of extra bells and whistles that are nothing more than talking points. 
They do not make the mattress better or last longer. In fact, they add to early failure.
 
So, let's put all their BS aside and focus on what you need.
Based on your husband's size, you must start off with the Simmons Beautyrest Black Series.
The triple strand wire coils are the strongest that Simmons makes.
But, the memory foam upholstery is there to cause the mattress to wear prematurely.
To get around that, and add the surface softness you and your husband want, add a 2" Plush Talalay Latex Topper.
 
Latex is the best upholstery material on the planet, and has been for the last 100 years.
It will insulate you from the memory foam in the mattress, absorb your body weight, and cause the mattress to last far longer than the manufacturer intended. And, the latex toppers sleep cool...while the memory foam sleeps hot.
 
My recommendation is for the Simmons Beautyrest Black Desiree in Luxury Firm.
And, a Pure Bliss 2" Plush Talalay Latex Topper to go one it.

Should I be worried an allergic reaction to the latex topper?

I am so looking forward my new latex mattress topper.

I did forget to mention to you that I think I am allergic to latex, only because of my last trip to the dentist. 
He put this latex guard in my mouth for a couple of hours as he was working in my mouth.
I broke out into a rash on my face and neck.  
I have never been allergic to anything in my life, never. 
Should I be worried an allergic reaction to the latex topper?

Good Morning Judy,
No need to worry.
Latex foam rubber is processed differently from other latex products.
The allergen in latex, is the naturally present protein from the sap of the rubber tree.
This allergen is removed during the process of making latex foam, to the point of rendering it hypoallergenic.
And, unlike that guard the dentist used, the latex in the topper never comes directly in contact to you. 
The allergic reaction to latex, almost always manifests itself topically.

A Two Sided, Flippable Mattress, Reasonably Priced, for Someone a Little Overweight.

I'm looking for a two sided, flippable mattress....one that has a good 10 year warranty. I would like one with No memory foam. 
I don't like that sucking you into like quick sand  feel, and being unable to move. 
I need a mattress that will go onto a adjustable bed. 
I need inner coils that can hold up under a person who is a little overweight. 
I also want a mattress that you can't feel motion of the other person. 
Flippable would be wonderful. I like a mattress isn't over 12 inches thick.
