Neck and Shoulder Pain from an Old Latex Mattress.

Hi Pete,

 

My wife and I have had a high quality latex mattress for 16 years now. It has truly been a

great mattress.

Every year or two we either rotate or flip it and it does not appear to show any signs of

failing. My wife sleeps mostly on her side and I sleep mostly on my stomach or back.

She sleeps great, but for a year or so now, I wake up with neck and shoulder pain. I

noticed that when I travel and sleep on an innerspring mattress with a pillow top I wake

up feeling much better. 

We don't think the latex mattress is failing, and my wife still loves it, so replacing it may

not solve the problem.

Do you have any insights or recommendations?

Hi Chris,
The news is all good, with a reasonably inexpensive and long term fix to your problem.
Latex takes a long time to wear. And how it wears is the best part. It generally
becomes firmer, which is why it isn't as comfortable as it once was. The good thing 
about that, is you still have plenty of support, which means you don't need a new mattress.

Firm Simmons Beautyrest Mattress and an EverEden Soft Latex Topper to Relieve Back Pain.

I have read your advice regarding Simmons plush mattresses.
I have one of the dreaded Simmons Beautyrest Imperial "plush" mattresses. 

Only 2 years old, I am convinced that it is far too soft and the cause of my poor sleep and back pain. 

I wish I had returned it while I could have.
Since sleeping on a cheap futon recently and waking up refreshed and pain-free, I have decided to do something about my own bed.
However, I spent a lot of money on the Simmons plush, and I have very little budget for this problem.
Is it at all possible to firm it up? I realize that the problem lies in the thin gauge springs and doubt that anything can be done.
I have placed plywood under which has helped a tiny bit. 

I am thinking that I could flip it over so that the very thick (and too soft) pillow top would be on the bottom.
Would a firm latex topper placed on the now-flipped "bottom" help me out then? 

Or, is putting a firm topper on a weak-sprung mattress an unwise way to approach this dilemma?

Hi Dan,

A human body requires some degree of firm support and some degree of a soft sleeping surface.

What you're proposing is just the opposite of what your body needs.

I'm afraid this "band-aid" approach will not have the desired effect.

EverEden 2" Soft Latex Topper on a Too Firm Mattress to Relieve Shoulder Pain.

I'd always used hand me down mattresses and then finally splurged and bought a Simmons Beautyrest Firm mattress, a few months ago. 

It felt good on my back in the store, but I've become more of a side sleeper and this mattress has become unbearable painful on my shoulders. 

I tried a memory foam topper and it stunk, too hot and too annoying when rolling from sided to side, like quick sand.

Having a problem with sheets that pop off my mattress.

Latex/Down Pillow for Relief of Chronic Neck Pain.

Thanks for the advice I did order the EverEden 2" Soft Vytex Dunlop latex topper. I am
extremely pleased with the comfort it provides. 
I do have another question, about pillows. I have neck pain issues. I have tried many
different pillows and never found one that works, I am a side sleeper and I like a firm
pillow but all of the foam pillows that I have tried I have found do not conform enough
to my head and neck. I was looking at your "Latex/Down" pillow, and all the things you 
have to say about it. 
Do you think it will work for me?

Back and Hip Pain with a Tempurpedic Mattress

Hi Joanne,
The memory foam on your Tempurpedic is a temperature sensitive material. 

It softens and collapses once warmed from your body's heat and pressure is placed upon it from your body's weight. 

You are sinking through the memory foam to the harder poly foam beneath it.
This is what is causing the pressure at your hip.

Your husband is sinking in, as well....around the hips and waste, which is throwing off the natural alignment of his spine.

For relief of chronic back pain, he couldn't have chosen a worse mattress than Tempurpedic.

Pure Talalay Bliss Latex-Down Pillow to Relieve Chronic Neck Pain.

Hi John,

We are kindred sufferers. I have arthritis on one side of my neck and suffered with the pain it causes for many years.

Like you, I've tried countless types of pillows that help me feel better initially, but loses their resiliency much to quickly.

The best for short term use was the down (feather) pillows for relieving pain, but flattened out faster than any other type.

Even all latex pillows, which last for years, don't quite fit my neck and only help with the pain a little.

A few years ago, I was given a pillow by the Pure Talalay Bliss mattress people. 

It was a new design...made of finely chopped latex.

It behaves like a down pillow...allowing me to mold the mattress around my head and neck so that it fit perfectly, regardless of my sleeping position.
