Latex foam is nothing like latex gloves or bandages.

When latex foam is made, it goes through a process that removes so much of the allergen as to make it hypoallergenic.

Simmons Beautyrest Plush Silver Mattress Causing Back Pain and Night sweats.

Hello Pete,

About 15 months ago we upgraded from a full to a king size bed. Went to a furniture store and got the mattress there as well. 

We got a Simmons Beautyrest Silver model. No idea what kind but I’d say it’s plush. I thought I wanted soft but boy do I miss my old $300 mattress.

I’ve developed back pain and night sweats with this mattress. At first I thought it was from pregnancy and then hormonal from having a baby. 

Now that my little guy is 14 months old. I know it’s definitely the mattress. 

I’m sure, since it’s over a year, we are stuck with it. Is there anything I can add to firm it up? 

Or, do I need to get a new mattress all together and if so what do you recommend?

PS. My husband loves it so not sure what the compromise is.

Good Morning Alicia,

Whenever we recommend a Simmons Beautyrest mattress, it's a Luxury Firm model with a latex topper.

For a Beautyrest mattress to last, it must have the latex topper on it from the start.

Otherwise, what has happened to you, will happen with all of them.

Frankly, I'm surprised that your husband is ok. He must be reasonably fit..and with no back problems for the mattress to aggravate. 

That doesn't mean it's good for him. A mattress like that will cause problems that don't yet exist, eventually.

 

The problem with a plush Beautyrest is two-fold.

The plush models are made plush by using a much thinner wire for the coils.

The steel, from which the coils are made, is not tempered. Raw steel is not as resilient as tempered steel.

This is why your back hurts. Your spine is not getting the support it needs.

 

Also, the upholstery layers are memory foam.

Memory foam is the worst upholstery material ever invented, with it's sole purpose being to cause a mattress to need frequent replacing.

The mattress industry has been experiencing a boon, because they are selling more mattresses more frequently to the same people.

Memory foam is the only upholstery material that is temperature sensitive. It softens as it warms from your body heat.

Then, it reflects that heat back to you, which is what is causing your night sweats.

 

Once that mattress goes bad, there is no fixing it.

If re-buying a Simmons Beautyrest mattress, you will need a latex topper to go with it.

If you're going out shopping for a new mattress, avoid memory foam, (aka Visco), altogether.

Simmons' memory foam is cured, so that it doesn't off gas the toxic chemicals from which it's made.

This is no the case with most other brands. The off gassing attacks you're respiratory system, with sinus headache being the most common side effect.

 

Before I recommend a mattress, I will need to know the sizes, (heights and weights), of the people using it.

If you get back to me with that information, I'll be happy to offer a recommendation for you and your husband.

Is there nothing that I can put on top to firm it up? 

I actually slept on my old bed last night and felt great with no sweating. My $300 mattress from college is the best, haha. 

I want that in king!! I got it from some wholesale wearhouse. No idea what it’s made of or what brand. 

I definitely don’t want memory foam. I didn’t think we got a memory foam mattress. 

The sales person did Not explain much. It was just soft like a hotel mattress, which come to think of I don’t really enjoy sleeping on. 

I’m 5’0, 126 lbs and my husband is 5’11 and 180 and is very fit.

ALL Simmons Beautyrest mattresses, sold at retail store, are upholstered with memory foam.

Once gone bad, there is NOTHING you can do to make it right.

You can buy a firm latex topper, but that won't improve the lack of support...only make the surface firm and uncomfortable.

 

The foundation you have is fine, so all you need is a mattress.

Talalay Latex Mattress Toppers to Canada.

I have been reading and enjoying your blog...

I made the mistake of purchasing a Black Simmons Beautyrest mattress in plush. The model name, here in Canada, is the Vivien II.

The mattress that came felt much softer and I sunk in much more than the store model.

I purchased this prior to reading anything on your site.

I will be returning it on the comfort warranty and I only have a one time replacement free of charge.

I do not want to make the same mistake. 

They have a Black model on the floor one with a Eurotop in what is called luxury firm or the same model as a tight top in luxury firm. 

The name is not the same so I am not sure but think this would be comparable to the Desiree model.

 

So the question is would you recommend going with the tight top and add a topper? or go with the eurotop with the luxury firm model?

Based on what I have read in your blog I am considering changing for the luxury firm tight top version. 

Your advice to others has been for the luxury firm and a Talalay latex topper.

 

Also not knowing anything about the toppers how do they secure to the bed? Do they move around?  That is a concern of my wife. 

Maintenance? How are they for heat? The Simmons pillow/comfort tops seem to retain heat too much but not sure about the latex.

 

Finally I see you ship to Canada? Do you know what kind of delivery times are typical? I live in a large city.

Putting fitted sheets on a dual king adjustable bed mattress.

Hi Pete,

We like our adjustable bed.  We needed it for medical reasons.  Changing the sheets is a major issue.  

I don't think we would have gone through this huge expense if we had known this.   

We might be able to do this for a couple more years but at some point we will be too old to manage changing the sheets on this bed.

Do you have a solution to our problem?

That mattress has been discontinued. But, the news is worse than that.

Sealy has been sold...purchased by Tempurpedic in 2013.

All Sealy Posturepedic mattress, made today, are loaded with memory foam....the worst upholstery material ever invented.

The purpose of memory foam is to cause a mattress to need frequent replacing.

It has created a boon for the industry and a nightmare for the consumer. 

Your mattress has no memory foam in it....which is why it help up so well.

 

Sealy used to make an excellent quality mattress, and at a reasonable price.

Today, everything they make for retail stores are nothing more than expensive junk.

 

I'm afraid you won't be able to find anything like your old Reserve Series Holly Springs Posturepedic.

You have to start from scratch.

When you shop, be sure to avoid buying mattresses that have memory foam in them.

A Latex Topper for Your Older Sealy Posturepedic Mattress to Relieve Hip Pain.

I have an older Sealy Posturepedic mattress. The mattress is firm and in excellent condition.

But since having back surgery, earlier this year, I'm finding that the mattress is too firm to sleep on comfortably.

Looking for a New Two Sided Mattress.
