Hi Michele,
An air mattress does not provide the push back support your spine needs...anyone's spine. Displacement is not proper support.
A large man with DDD requires a firm mattress, with coils pushing back up against you, that will remain firm over many years.
In addition, you will also need a comfortable sleeping surface that will also retain its comfort over the long term.
The problem with most of today's mattresses is that they aren't made well...not like they had been only 15 years ago.
Today, mattresses are loaded with memory foam...made to be replaced frequently.
