Hi Pete,
I'm at my wits end. I keep buying mattresses, and they don't hold up.
Granted, I weigh 375 Lbs., but my 20 year old mattress held up just fine.
Frankly, I'm sorry I got rid of it.
I've tried different types and brands of mattresses, at various price points.
All turn to mush within a year.
At this point, I don't have a lot of money to spend, but don't want to waste anymore of it.
It's just me in the bed. I need a queen size.
What do you have that will last?
Thanks, Elgin
Hi Elgin,
Most of today's mattresses, and all of the name brands, are upholstered with memory foam.
Memory foam is a temperature sensitive material, that softens after is absorbs your body heat.
It isn't very resilient to begin with, so even light weight people have the same problems you've experienced.
There was NO Memory Foam in your 20 year old mattress, which is why it held up well.
To return to that kind of quality, oddly enough, doesn't cost much...so, you're in luck.
The strongest coil unit, throughout the last 100 years, was the Bonnell Coil.
This was a very large coil, with a heavy gauge, double tempered steel wire.
Over a period of 4 decades, high density polyurethane foam was the primary upholstery material....which ended with the advent of memory foam.
This is what was in your 20 year old mattress.
However, pure, 100% all natural latex foam rubber has been the best upholstery material for the last 100 years. (Best, in terms of comfort and durability).
Here is a link to the Tulah Firm Mattress...which uses that Bonnell Coil unit and high density poly foam....an Old Fashioned Two Sided Flippable Mattress.
Old Fashioned made Two Sided Mattress that you can flip. Strong coil unit and NO Memory Foam. Durable for Plus Sized People. Works with Adjustable Bed Bases.

I imagine that because you were also 20 years older, you found your 20 year old mattress to be lacking in comfort...which is why you went shopping for new.
Like your old mattress, The Tulah Firm isn't comfortable.
It's provides excellent support and will well handle your 375 lb. frame.
But, to make that mattress comfortable, add an EverEden Pure, 100% All Natural Latex Mattress topper. Specifically, the 3" Vytex Dunlop Latex in Medium.

Latex is nothing like memory foam. Latex provides long lasting comfort and is extremely resilient.
Besides adding surface comfort for a deeper night's sleep, it will absorb much of your body weight...causing the mattress to work less and last longer.
And, all this costs a lot less than you'd expect.

ALSO IMPORTANT:
I suggest using a waterproof mattress protector with every mattress.
Keeping your mattress clean and dry will greatly extend the life and loft of the upholstery materials inside. Ours sleep cool and make NO Noise.
