I bought a sleep number bed 5 years ago, and after a year, my back started hurting. Now, my neck, upper and lower back ache all night long.
I am a tummy sleeper and have to prop myself up with a pillow under my belly to sleep this way.
I added a 3 inch memory foam topper to "fill the depression in the mattress" hasn't helped.
My sleep number is at 100, the highest setting possible. Some nights I have to go to the guest room and sleep on the Simmons mattress.
Can you recommend a Simmons mattress? This is very frustrating!
You have a couple of forces working against you.
First, is the mattress.
An air mattress will hammock and not provide the upward support that a human body requires.
It is especially bad for a stomach sleeper, as it will grossly exaggerate the arch at the small of the back...causing pain.
Second, is the memory foam band aid you applied.
Memory foam is temperature sensitive and will soften, sink and collapse...becoming, essentially, worthless.
It's just a lousy quality mattress, all around.
A luxury firm Simmons Beautyrest is a good choice
With coils that move independently, you have plenty of push back support to maintain your spine's natural alignment.
The Simmons Beautyrest Platinum Sandy Springs in Luxury Firm is the mattress to choose.

If you do feel the need for a topper, get one made of all natural latex.
They come in your choice of comfort levels and will maintain their feel for many years.
The one my wife and I use is now several years old and still like new.
