Hi Flora,

Our website is missing all of the plush models from the Simmons line. I did that purposefully to save us both from the nightmare that befalls people who buy the plush models. 

What makes them "plush" is a very thin wire used for the coils....much thinner than what is used for the firmer models. 

This creates a greater depth of softness and also creates a warranty issue almost every time. 

The thin wire loses its resiliency quickly and the plush models start to lose their shape within months of purchase and are shot within a year or two. 

The Luxury Firm models use a much heavier gauge wire coil and are, generally, problem free. 

If a more luxurious feel is what you want, add a 2" layer of soft Talalay latex to the top. 

This will provide outstanding surface comfort and last a for many years. 

As a side benefit, the mattress too will last much longer, as latex is extremely resilient and will absorb much of your body weight.

We want a mattress like the Simmons Heavenly Bed.

I have looked at your website a few times now and was hoping you could help me. So here's my story.

About 5 years ago, I purchased the equivalent to the heavenly bed (or so I was told). I had it for only 11 months before I moved and gave it away. 

I really liked it from what I remember so when I passed by one of those large mattress chain stores, I decided to try out some similar mattresses. 

We are living in a furnished apartment and our current bed sags in the middle horribly. 

The salesperson showed my boyfriend and I a few Simmons Beautyrest models after I told her that I liked the Heavenly bed. 

We both liked the Brooklyn model, an 850 coil  firm pillowtop. 

The prices, however, seem ridiculous! 

I can get a Heavenly bed delivered much cheaper than what the salesperson told us unless we get a floor model or one "used for 19 days", then we get $500 off.

I'm reading on your website that pillowtops fail quite quickly nowadays and I'm weary of that. 

We did not like the hybrid models we tried at the store and were never shown any latex beds. 

I'm not sure how a latex topper feels, but I don't I like the memory foam much (my parents have a Tempurpedic and I don't like it). Neither do they.

We're both not big people (5'0" 120 lbs and 5'8" 170 lbs), and seem to like firm and we want a queen. 

He's an every-which-way sleeper and I sleep on my back and side. 

As with most people, I would like to spend the least amount of money for the best comfort but will pay more for something that is going to last.

Simmons Beautyrest Black Mattress with a Latex Topper.

My wife and I have narrowed are search down to Simmons Beautyrest Black and Stearns and Foster.  We like a firm pillow top I guess.  Unless the pillow tops do not hold up.  

Laid on a Beautyrest Black at Macy's called the Reyna Luxury Firm Pillow top.  Felt about right.  

Also laid on a Stearns & Foster Estate Luxury Firm Pillow top, which was probably just a bit too soft.  

I want to know the basics....that I am getting a current model, won't sag in three months.  I'll say it, I want a great mattress and really don't want to spend more that $4000.

Trust has to be earned with each and every customer.

The stuff you've read on my website and blog is the straight dope, when it comes to what to look for and what to be leery of. 

Also, our products are properly represented...without the BS or hype.

The Simmons Black is a much better choice than Stearns & Foster, for over-all quality. 

That said, the pillowtop models in any line are a terrible choice, as the pillowtops always lose their shape and comfort within months of purchase.

 

My wife and I had home tested a Luxury Firm Black model with a 2" soft Talalay Latex topper. 

This combination keeps it shape and comfort over the years and it is one I would recommend for you.

At most store, you will find a sea of mattresses, all upholstered with memory foam.

And while the standard sales pitch touts that junk as the best thing since sliced bread, I'm here to contradict that.

Memory foam has, in fact, proven itself to be thee worst upholstery material available over it's 20 year history.

The purpose of the memory foam is to sell more mattresses, more frequently, to the same people.

If it's a long term purchase you're looking for, then memory foam is thee thing to avoid.

 

In it's 100 year history, natural latex is and has been thee very best upholstery material anywhere on the planet.

Your acknowledgement of plush mattresses not lasting as long as firm mattresses, is a correct assessment based on simple physics.

However, if you substitute high quality components for poor quality, you can have you cake and eat it too.

The mattress we sleep on at home, is a perfect example.

Natura of Canada Greenspring uses a twice tempered steel pocketed coil mattress with a higher coil count than any of that type.

Furthermore, the upholstery is natural latex.

Compare that with a Simmons Beautyrest...where the steel is not tempered and the upholstery is memory foam.

The difference in quality is huge...as is the difference in the number of years it will last.

If it's a long term purchase you're after, then the Natura of Canada Greenspring is what to get.

There are 5 models in the line. Based on description of personal comfort, the Ultra Plush model is the one to get.

Don't be fooled by the "Ultra Plush" label. It's nowhere near as soft as it sounds. The "Plush Eurotop" model is the most comfortable of the 5...again, without being too soft.

Simmons Beautyrest Black Brooklyn Luxury Firm Pillowtop Mattress.

Hi Steve,

Pillowtops, all pillowtops, lose their shape much to quickly to be a good value.

However, half priced floor samples are a good buy and hard to pass up.

You should be aware that Brooklyn is an older model that is no longer being produced...hasn't been for quite a while.

That tells me that you saw it at some sort of a clearance center.

 

When a mattress is deemed defective, once exchanged, the defective mattress goes back to the factory for credit.

They take that mattress, re-bag it and sell it by the truck load, for pennies on the dollar to clearance centers.

It's the only way for them to get a mattress like that.

So, it isn't just a floor sample...which leads you to believe that it is, basically, still new. It isn't.

It's been in someone's home...for years...based on the model name. It isn't just a floor sample, it's a defective mattress that was returned.

So, you see, the risk is greater than you imagined.

 

But, like I said, the price is hard to overlook. And, quite frankly, if you bargain with them a bit, you'll be able to get it for less...as the base prices on now good it looks.

If you do buy that mattress, get a 2" Soft or Medium Vytex Dunlop Latex topper to go on it....for surface comfort that lasts, and to slow any further wear of the mattress.

The latex topper will absorb almost all of your body weight.

New mattress or a latex topper for my 20 year old Simmons Beautyrest?

It is still very firm but I have an arthritic right hip and was hoping to replace this with something a little softer.  I stumbled across your website which gave me a lot of information to process.

1. How do I know when to replace the mattress?  Are there any tests or signs to look for?  I have been flipping and rotating this thing a few times a year and still get a good night's sleep on it.  

I tell people I have a 20 year old mattress and the conventional wisdom is it has outlasted its lifespan.

It's a good thing you found my blog before you spent the money on a new mattress. 

Common sense is what you use to determine if you need a new mattress...as opposed to people spouting off conventional wisdom....which, oddly enough, lacks wisdom.

A mattress's lifespan depends on the quality of the product and who is using it and how it has been used. 20 years ago, mattresses were made a whole lot better than today...by and large.

"I still get a good night's sleep on it" is the indication that it does not need to be replaced. All that has changed is your need for a softer surface.

A new mattress that provides that softer surface will fail quickly, as the poly and memory foams, used in most of today's mattresses, compresses easily and loses their comfort quickly.

 

Latex foam is both comfortable and resilient and not used in most mattresses. It would defeat the purpose of increasing profits by making disposable mattresses...as they do now.

Two inch of soft Talalay Latex is all you'll need to provide long lasting comfort to that arthritic hip. The 2" Soft Talalay Latex Topper works best for most people. 

If you are unusually light in weight, the 3" soft will work better.  If average or a bit above average in weight, stick with the 2" soft Talalay.

The toppers come finished. They stay in place and never needs re-positioning. It never shifts or bunches up.

Adding the latex topper to what you have will, not only provide the comfort you want, but also add years more life to a mattress you don't have to buy.

My sympathies to you and to all of your neighbors.

The mattress you seek is no longer being made. 

In 2013 Tempurpedic bought Stearns & Foster. In January of 2014, everything they make was changed to include memory foam.

Your mattress has no memory foam in it, which is why you were so happy with it for so long.

Memory foam is the absolute worst upholstery material ever invented...specifically designed to sell more mattresses, more frequently, to the same people.

Even their latex line is poisoned with layers of memory foam. 

Besides being a lousy product, in terms of performance, memory foam is also a health hazard...off gassing the toxic chemicals from which it's made. 

 

S&F used to be very high quality, and we were happy to have been a S&F retailer.

We stopped carrying them when Tempurpedic bought them and added all that memory foam.

What had been, "The Cadillac of the Industry", for many decades, is now nothing more than expensive junk...I'm sorry to say.

I can offer you something that will recreate the feel you had with that mattress, but is also better made.

The Talalay Global Pure Bliss Beautiful Latex Mattress is made of all Latex...Natural Talalay Latex. You'll love it as much as the one you had.

What happened to your mattress is what typically happens with memory foam, it loses it's support, comfort and resiliency much too quickly. 

Your mattress has memory foam on top, supported by much firmer poly foam.

Flip the mattress over, add a 2" soft layer of Talalay Latex, and you'll be good to go for support and surface comfort for a number of years more.

Hi Bill,

Plush, extra plush and ultra plush pillowtop mattresses, especially Simmons Beautyrests, are not appropriate choices for every night use in a master bedroom.

The gauge of wire used for the coil is very thin, and the steel they use to make the coil is not tempered.

Along with the memory foam upholstery, it will lose its shape in too short of a time...and the padding, being so soft, also will lose its shape.

Higher end hotels aim for comfort, as that is their business to provide. The rooms are not used every night and are filled on a rotating basis. 

Also, they can afford to replace those mattresses every few years, as it becomes necessary. 

 

At home, used every night, a mattress like that will develop deep body impressions within months and be totally useless. needing replacing, in a year's time.

The mattress industry, as a whole, is geared to selling comfort above all. 

This tact, along with the reduced quality of mattresses in general, has turned mattresses into a disposable product.

This causes most people to becoming repeat customers on a more frequent basis than every before. 

 

Had you slept on that mattress for an extended period of time, you would have developed back pain, as it does not provide adequate spinal support. 

If you have an existing back issue, it will make it worse. If you have no existing back problems, you will develop them because the support of the mattress is too soft.

I know you would have simply preferred to have me point to something and say, "This is what you want" and let it go at that. 

And, there are plenty of places you can go to shop, where you can get that kind of service, where making the sale is all that matters.  

But here, you receive advice and direction that is unasked for, because here, we love what we do. 

We work with love and not with indifference....if only our elected officials felt the same...can you imagine?

 

Anyway, for you, it's as if you had gone to a trusted family member who you know will not let you do, that which will hurt you...both, physically and financially. 

Granted, it isn't the easy sell you may have been looking for, but heeding this advice will serve you better for everything you expected from this purchase...comfort, support and longevity.

Your skeletal system requires firm support. For the sake of pressure point relief, ease of blood flow and muscle relaxation, you need a comfortable sleeping surface. 

All of these things combine to provide a deep, rejuvenating night's sleep. The mattress you asked about does that, but for only a short time. 

This is true of most mattresses you can buy today. There's no trick to finding a comfortable mattress. The stores are full of them. 

The trick is in finding one without throwing your money away on something that only lasts a year or two...and subsequently, creating pain when they wear so quickly.

 

My recommendation comes in two parts. First, start off with a reasonably firm mattress that will provide the support your spine needs. 

The Simmons Beautyrest "World Class" Series name has recently changed to "Platinum" Series.  The Sandy Springs model in luxury firm is the mattress I'm recommending. 

The individually pocketed coils of the Beautyrests maintain the natural alignment of your spine, and provide a greater degree of motion transfer reduction than any other brand. 

The heavier gauge wire coils in the firm will last a much longer time than the thinner wire used in the plush models. 

Add to that, a layer of soft latex. Unlike the chemical laden poly and memory foams used in most mattresses, latex is far more resilient. 

Made of all natural rubber, it does a superior job of providing the pressure point relief, relief of blood flow, and muscle relaxation...and, it lasts a very long time. 

Normally, I recommend going with a 2" soft Talalay. If looking for an "extra plush" feel, the 3" provides a greater depth of softness.
