My husband and I are in the market for a new mattress. We both have back and neck issues and I suffer from fibromyalgia. 

I have read a few of the posts from your site recently and was hoping you could provide some information please. 

We currently have a mattress with a pillow top which I hate!  So I don't want to go that route again. 

I know you recommend the latex topper but I am allergic to latex and was wondering if you have an alternative topper you recommend that is a non-latex version?

As for a mattress, I recently stayed at a hotel and slept on a Beautyrest Hospitality Collection Plush mattress  that was probably the best sleep I have had in 15 years. 

It did have a pillow top but it was a firmer mattress. I was hoping there was a comparable mattress without a pillow top that you could recommend?

If there is any additional information that you could provide that would help us in making an informed decision that would be great. 

I don't want to make another $1300 purchase only to find I hate my bed.

It would be a shame to miss out on what works, due to a misunderstanding.

The sap from the rubber tree contains protein, which is the allergen in latex.

Why you should never buy a mattress through a hotel

I am looking to buy a new mattress. I recently slept on a mattress at the Sheraton Hotel in Boston that I liked very much. It is under their "Sweet Sleeper" brand, but I assume that it is actually from name manufacturer and has a proper model name. Do you know what it is? I love the mattress, but I don't love the "buy direct from Sheraton" price.

We bought a $1200 Sheraton Sweet Sleeper and it's the noisiest, most rickety mattress we've ever had. Every movement causes a loud creak and makes the whole bed move. The workmanship is poor to say the least. This mattress is NOT the mattress I slept on at a Sheraton hotel. Very disappointed. Please be careful - you can't return it.

I'm going to agree with SP. I haven't noticed a noise, but it's a ridiculously soft mattress. We've only had it for a few months. Obviously, at the hotel, many people have slept on it and it wasn't nearly as soft. I agree that it's not the same mattress and they offer you no refund or exchange or anything. 1200 bucks down the drain and both my husband and I are suffering from awful back pain - worse than the back pain we started to get from our 15 yo old mattress - which is why we bought a new one. We would've been better off keeping that one but I had slept at a Sheraton and insisted we get that bed because it was the best sleep of my life. I've had not one great night of sleep on whatever copycat it is they're selling us.

To the Reading Public:

As you can see, from the comments above, buying from a hotel does not guarantee that you will get the mattress you slept on when you stayed there.

That was the assumption made by the two people who commented...and they were disappointed.

The mattress that the hotel is featuring for sale, may or may not be the same mattress that was in your room.

Not only do you run the risk of getting a completely different mattress than the one you thought you were buying, you'll pay a lot more for it than you would at a retail store.

 

If you like the mattress you're sleeping on at the hotel in which you are staying, uncover the mattress to see what brand it is. Look at the "Law" label at the head of the mattress to find the date of manufacture.

Then email me with that information, so that you don't end up with something you didn't expect or want. We can get you what you want for a whole lot less money.

A Mattress and a Latex or Feather Topper Recommendation needed for Fibromyalgia.

I have a one year old Serta Icomfort Insight Everfeel mattress that is not great on my back but definitely too hard on my side, causing hip pain and numbness in my hand. 

I'm not sure if it's because my room temperature tends to be cooler since I sleep in a walkout basement. I have chronic pain from fibromyalgia and neck issues from multiple fractures. 

I'm a side sleeper. I'm 5'7", 230 pounds, hourglass with slightly larger hips. I also have an electric adjustable base. Previously I had a latex bed that was also too firm (perhaps a too firm Dunlop version?) 

I tried different toppers with no relief. So with memory foam not working, I'm about to buy again. 

In the showroom, I like the initial feel of the Serta icomfort observer so I think the combination of pocketed springs and talalay/wool will work for me. 

I want the best setup for pain relief but with sensitivities/allergies, I need a more natural sleep surface.  

So I think a greenspring will work. For the best support with softest feel, would I get the Liberty euro top ultra plush?  

Would I still need the 2" talalay topper?  Will it work on my adjustable base? 

I actually read on one blog where they recommended this combination but also suggested a feather or fiber bed on the very top. 

Is that necessary to give me the comfort I need? There's even a new hybrid/latex combo mattress by Leggett and Platt (see last pic.) 

I'm retired now and can't afford to choose wrong! I know you can't give medical advice but please help if you can.

Fibro tends to be progressive...worsening over time.

Frankly, being a large woman does its part to aggravate the situation.

A low carb diet is the fastest way to lose the weight, if you have doing so in mind. Of course, you'll want to check with your doctor before starting a diet like that.

Fibromyalgia Pain on a Sleep Number Bed Mattress.

The coil unit in that mattress is the strongest on the market.

However, 500 lbs bouncing on it, will eventually take its toll.

The question becomes less about will it withstand the pressure, but for how long.

We do carry the Simmons Beautyrest and there are models in the regular line to match that hotel model. 

On our site, I have eliminated all of the plush and plush pillowtop models, as they all lose their shape much too quickly.

Keep in mind that hotels gear for comfort and are willing to replace their mattresses more frequently for that reason.

A plush pillowtop Beautyrest for every night home use is a monumental waste of money. 

The initial comfort is lost within months and the thin gauge wire used for the coils will give out within a year or two under average body weight.

I attributed it to stress until my husband, who lives out of town, slept on it for about 3 weeks and complained of backaches. 

I have decided to change my mattress because of this. 

I visited a retailer and slept on their Beautyrest Legend King ($2800) and liked it. 

I went to another store and also liked their Beautyrest Recharge world class King ($1800). Both are the firm version without the pillow top. 

Upon getting home to do more research, I found that these products come in pillow top, plush, firm and extra firm. 

The thing is, I am not sure if what I liked was firm or extra firm. I also think that I can get these mattresses cheaper. I prefer the firm beds without the soft tops. 

Also, what should I look out for when buying? You recommended the latex topper. Will it make the mattress softer? Please advise. Thank you.

Things to look out for, are things like that Legend mattress.

It's an exclusive product for that store. It has a twist to the end of the coils and an extra 1/2" layer of padding over the World Class.

These small details don't amount to much, but since no other Beautyrest has it, they can over price it without fear that you'll find the same exact thing elsewhere.

Another thing to be aware of, is the memory foam in the mattress. It wears poorly and sleeps hot.

When we recommend a Beautyrest for every night adult use, we recommend the World Class with a latex topper.

The latex toppers are available in a variety of comfort levels. Usually, the mattress in luxury firm and the topper in soft.

The mattress provides the support and the topper provides the surface comfort.

The latex topper also insulates you from the memory foam...allowing you to sleep cool.

Latex is the most resilient upholstery material on the planet. It will absorb most or all of your body weight, causing the mattress to last a lot longer than it would on its own.

 

The Luxury Firm model is firm, but not as stiff as the extra firm.

When considering the curves of the female body and the pressure point that they create at the hip, the luxury firm is often the better choice.

You would choose the extra firm to support heavier weight, a back with serious disc problems, or a back and stomach sleeper where the pressure point at the hip is not an issue.

The latex topper softens only the top 2" of the mattress and does not negate the firm support that the mattress provides.
