I like a cushy queen size bed, but as a 5'7" 250 pound middle-aged woman and I seem to be crushing my mattress and that of the place we stay on weekends.
I have to find positions out of the 'sag zone' and always wake up with lower back pain and stiffness.
I also have a bulging disk in my lower spine. I am looking to replace my mattress for those reasons despite not having ANY money to do so.
My current mattress is less than 10 year old and a mid to top of the line Sealy I think.
Thanks for any and all advice. If possible please send me a few options. :)
Stacy
Hi Stacy,
You pose a scenario with a difficult set of circumstances.
A large woman on a cushy mattress means having to replace it much too frequently. For your bed, you will need a firm mattress to support your weight and your bulging discs. The only way to also get the cushioning you like and have it not break down, is to add a layer of soft latex to it.
Here are two links for mattresses for your queen. The first is what we normally recommend for adults of your size. However, given your financial constraints, the second link is to an inexpensive mattress that is surprisingly substantial for the money. The third link is to the latex toppers, opt for the 2" soft Talalay, which will be the key for your long term support and comfort. Besides being comfortable, latex is the most resilient material available. It's the only type of padding that will handle your weight long term.

Hi Pete,
I sent you this email and received your response almost 4 years ago and am finally ready to get myself a new bed.
Are these still your best suggestions for me or are there better options available now?
In short I am a 50 year old, 250 pound woman with some back issues.
And a limited budget. :)
Thanks!
Stacy
Hi Stacy,
A lot has changed since you last wrote me.
Stearns & Foster is now owned by Tempurpedic. They've loaded everything with memory foam.
So, what had been "The Cadillac of the Industry" is now nothing more than a collection of expensive junk. We stopped carrying them because of this...very poor value.
And, Sealy no longer makes the mattress I initially recommended to you.
Since then, we've gone shopping for higher quality alternatives.
We have
3 two sided mattresses from Wolf...a very old Midwest family owned and operated manufacturer, that are well made and reasonably priced.
Of them, I suggest the Brooklyn Plush model for maximum comfort.
