Hi Tom,

At that time, there were a number of Simmons Beautyrests that had no memory foam in them. Some, like the Mirella, had a layer of latex.

Those days are gone. All Beautyrests have memory foam and only a couple of their most expensive "Black" models have a layer of latex.

The Mirella was a mid-level Series Beautyrest.

At this point, there are a couple of ways to go about this, without being disappointed in the result.

First, would be to go with a Mid-Level Simmons Beautyrest River Song model in luxury firm, and add to it, an Ever-Eden 2" Soft Natural Talalay Latex topper.

Mattress Recommendation for side and stomach sleepers.

La Quinta Hotel Mattress.

Hi Pete,
Found your site, “The Mattress Expert” looking for the brand of mattress used by a La Quinta Hotel that I stayed at recently and found to be most comfortable.  
I am a 78 years old side sleeper with very poor posture at 5’7” but shrinking, and weigh 190.  I am very active working on my farm driving and maintaining tractors, planting and various other type farm chores.   

I have a history of low lumbar disc problems, scheduled for surgery years ago but I cancelled as my back had greatly improved.  

I still have some back pain at times if I overdo physical activities.  Other than that, I am in good physical condition. 
I now need to replace for myself a 7 inches high full mattress, and a foundation that is 7 ½ inches high.  They sit on the side rails of the bed; total height off the floor is 23 1/2 inches.   

I am very confused as to what mattress to purchase.

Hi Judy,

The mattress industry goes out of its way to be confusing.

They do that job very well.

The mattress at LaQuinta is a Simmons Beautyrest.

Hotels are more concerned with making their guests comfortable and less about the durability of the mattress. 

They use low end Beautyrests and simply replace them every few years.

The thing that makes a Beautyrest so comfortable, is the design of the coil unit.

Beautyrest coils are individually pocketed and move independently from one another.

This provides support that contours to the body, maintains the spine's natural alignment.

However, the steel used to make the Simmons coils are not tempered and the upholstery used is, mainly, memory foam. 

These factors is what causes the lack of durability and the main reasons why their reviews are are so bad.

Simmons mattresses are available in plush or firm...with or without a pillowtop.

Pillowtops provide additional surface comfort that begins to lose their shape and that comfort within months.

Plush models are made plush by using a much thinner gauge wire for the coils than what is used in the firmer models 

Plush & Pillowtop models are made to sell, but last only a short time, and are the major source of all their complaints.

For this reason, we have chosen not to offer these models on our website.

They are a waste of money....not to mention the aggravation. 

For you, I have two recommendations.

The first is one we've recommended and sold countless times over the years, and with zero complaints.

That would be a Simmons Beautyrest World Class in Luxury Firm, and an Ever-Eden 2" soft Talalay Latex topper to go with it.

Most of today's mattresses are loaded with memory foam.

When shopping, salespeople talk about it like it's the best thing since sliced bread. It is, in fact, the worst material ever invented for this purpose.

Mattress advice for arthritis and fibromyalgia.

I'm 5'4" and weigh 150 lbs. I have pain issues that haven't been diagnosed but suspect arthiritis and maybe even fibromalagia. 

Neck pain (which only a down pillow, which needs replacing, has been the only pillow that really works best for keeping my neck pain free), shoulder pain, elbow pain, lower back pain are my biggest issues. 

I'm a side sleeper but dream of sleeping on my tummy and back more. Need to purchase a new bed. 

Been using a full size "Slumberon Maxima plush comfort for the last seven eight years and was given to us. It actually has been a very comfortable bed till I started have arthiritis setting in. 

I'm so excited to have found your site. Was about to purchase a Sealy luxury firm or pillow top from Sams club but hesitated which one would be better for my issues. That hesitation led me to you. 

A firm bed can cause my lower back to hurt. My guest room mattress is a Oracle innerspring mattress with insulation cushioning foam. 

It feels like a firm and Its in great shape and thinking of putting a latex topper on that to start to see what that would do as a test for me.

But, will have to leave it for my guests so I need a mattress and topper recommendation from you. 

My husband weighs guessing 200-225 and can sleep on anything so he says so my comfort is his top priority.

I checked out your mattress and it seems like a very simple design.

From your question, I'm gathering that the mattress is still in decent shape, but your increased sensitivity due to arthritis/fibro, has made the surface of the mattress uncomfortable for you.

If this is the case, logic dictates that we explore your options...other than automatically jumping to a new mattress.

And feeding into all of this, quite nicely, is that you have a spare room bed that will benefit from a latex topper.

3 year old Sealy pillowtop mattress is sagging and causing pain.

I have a 3 year old Sealy pillowtop mattress.  It got body impression sagging within months.  

I have had surgery on both hips, as well as a lumbar fusion.  I cannot sleep at all in my "hollowed out trench!"  The pain is excruciating. 

Additionally, I am a "hot" sleeper. What is your recommendation for a topper?

Latex sleeps cool, so there's no worries there. Also, latex...even soft latex, is far more resilient than the foams used by Sealy.

Before adding the topper to your mattress, first flip the mattress over.

The underside is firmer and not indented. Flipping your mattress before adding the topper will provide a nice even surface for support, and it will be stronger...a positive thing for supporting a large man.

Neck pain is better addressed with a pillow.

My Tempurpedic Mattress is killing me!

My present mattress, a Tempurepedic, is killing me.  I am in my ninth year with Parkinson's disease and I am 5'7, 275lbs.  My husband is 6'2, 240 pounds.  

When I first got the tempurepedic, I loved it. I was having trouble with bulging discs and bursitis of the hip.  

Now as my PD progresses I feel like the mattress is swallowing me.  I have great difficulty turning over.  I sink into the mattress and can't get myself out.  

When I sit on the side of the bed, it sinks in and I am afraid I am going to fall.  

What mattress would you recommend?

Hi Debra,

Your problem is a common one, experienced by Tempurpedic owners.

The problems are caused by the temperature sensitive memory foam on top.

There isn't a lot of memory foam and what little there is, is supported by a block of high density poly foam, which is not temperature sensitive.

You can eliminate some of your problems, by simply flipping your mattress over.

The underside is firmer and doesn't sink.

Do that tonight and see how it feels.

Chances are, that it'll be too firm to sleep on comfortably, but will provide you with adequate support.

All you need do, is add a latex topper to the flip side of your mattress, and you should be good to go for a number of years more.

A mattress is a pressure sensitive product, and my recommendations are, in part, weight related.

The recommendation, I made for Lauren, will accommodate people up to 200 lbs, at average height.

I make this distinction because a 5 footer at 200 will have their weight more concentrated over a 

smaller area than a 6 footer weighing the same.
