Two Sided, Flippable Wolf Mattress and Latex Topper for large people with back pain.

Dear Pete,

Your blog has been very informative. My husband is about 325 lbs., and I am about 165 lbs. 

I have some lower back arthritis and sciatic pain, and my husband, other than the weight, sometimes has lower back issues. 

We are looking for a flippable well-constructed mattress that is reasonably priced. We are looking at your Wolfe models and we have some questions.

We are sleeping on a king sized bed now with a 3" foam topper, but our problem is that the mattress is not flippable, and we have a "mountain in the middle".

We think it is because of the box spring, which is two twin-size box springs in metal frames connected together. 

Is it the mattress that is the problem? Or do we need a new foundation (box spring)? Do you recommend a certain type?

Regarding mattresses, would you recommend the Wolf Tulah Plush, and is it flippable? 

Also, what is the difference between the Wolf Tulah Plush, Wolf Tulah firm and the Wolf Tulah luxury firm? 

Are those models flippable? 

And which one of these would you recommend for us? 

Or would you recommend another brand or type of flippable mattress, given our situation.

We know that you recommend a 2" latex topper. Would you recommend the 2" or the 3" Dunlop topper and why?

Hi Jim & Eva,

All of our two-sided Wolf mattresses use the heaviest coil unit in the industry.

The upholstery is HD poly foam. There is no memory foam in those mattresses.

Given Jim's size, it would be prudent to get the firmest of them...the Wolf Tulah firm. This will provide firm support that will hold up well.

For comfort, go with the Ever-Eden 3" Soft Vytex Dunlop. My wife and I, (each about 225 lbs.), have been testing this topper for the last few months. It's very comfy and has more body than the more supple Talalay latex.

The Easy Fit Foundation, once assembled, is one piece in king. That will eliminate the problem caused by two half boxsprings. It is very strong.

The side edge of our Simmons Beautyrest mattress is slanted.

My husband and I are having the same issue- and are not sitting on the edge (other than naturally occurs when getting in to and out of the bed). have had for close to two months - awfully upset. 

Whoever sleeps on the right side of the bed cannot get close to the edge, as it's skewed and there's no support underneath.

Our store's mattress dept said, adamantly, that its not a manufacturer's defect...bed is no longer "squared up", it leans to one side, like a parallelogram. 

We have rotated it as instructed, and we put up a fuss. FINALLY they agreed to have inspector come out (3rd party) but said will probably do no good. 

The store's suggestion is to "see if gets worse".

Uhm, no, thanks. We'd rather not.

Your retailer is correct. That is not a factory defect. Simmons doesn't make them so they come out that way.

The fault lies with the store, itself.

The only way that happens is from that mattress having been stored on it's side.

Mattress need to be stored flat, but most stores don't have the space to do that...so they store them on edge.

Once you take a mattress or two from the pile, the rest lean to one side.

The parallelogram shape comes from being in that position too long...and only happens to a pocketed coil unit....like the Simmons Beautyrest.

Your retailer doesn't want to accept responsibility, because it translates into a loss...since they won't be able to return the bad mattress to Simmons for credit.

Quite often, when stored on edge, gravity affects the padding too...where the mattress is puffier on the side that was to the floor....if it sits that way too long.

It looks like you have a fight on your hands. If worse comes to worse, and you find yourself getting nowhere, contact the BBB and your state's Attorney General's office.

They are usually pretty good at getting results when you can't.

Also, one or more of your local TV news stations have a consumer advocate who also tend to get results, when threatened with publicity.

We Hate the American Sleep Organic Mattress from Sams Club.

Hi Lauren,
I went to the Sam's Club website to have a look at your mattress.
The wool & cotton on top is probably what you don't like about it...as each of those things compress easily.
Otherwise, it sounds pretty good.
So, before buying anything, let do an experiment with what you have.

Before going to be tonight, flip your mattress over, and dress it as you normally would. 
This will expose the latex to the surface.
And while it is unlikely to be all that comfortable, it should provide better support...and your back should stop hurting.
If this works out as I suspect, then all you would need is a soft talalay latex topper to soften the surface to your liking.
Given your sizes, the Ever-Eden 2" soft Talalay Latex topper should be all you'll need...shown here:

Things have changed dramatically over the past 10 years...and not for the better.
Shopping at stores has become a waste of time.
It used to be, that you'd go to a store, pick out a mattress, and that mattress would remain comfortable for the next 10 years or so.
Not any more.
Today's stores are pushing memory foam, which happens to be a horribly deceptive material.

I've been reading about the two sided Therapedic, Cameo.
Both my husband (6'1" ,250lbs) and I (5'5", 150lbs) have back problems.  

I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE sleeping but because of my herniated and bulging discs and degenerative disc disease I wake up feeling SO much pain!!!  

I love sleeping on my side and sometimes on my stomach but bc our bed is too soft sleeping in my stomach is out of the question!   

When I sleep on my side I feel like my spine is doing a letter U!  I can get comfortable on my back but that makes me snore-loudly!!  I wake my husband AND myself!  I need my restful sleep back!!!
Now that you know my issues will you please answer these questions?
-Is the Cameo the right bed for our body types?

-Is the Cameo the right bed for our back and neck health issues?
-I see the Cameo comes in Plush.   What is the difference and which would be better for us?
-Since our bed is not that old can I use our box springs?
-What is the price for this mattress in a king size?
-Is there financing available or payment plans?
-Might there be a chance that my health insurance would pay or help pay for this bed?  I have great health insurance....
-What is this latex thing I keep seeing on your website?  We live in South Florida, it gets very hot down here.
-Lastly, do you have a store or a showroom or a way to see and feel the mattress?  My husband is very stubborn when it comes to things like this.

Simmons Beautyrest Felicity-c, hotel mattress.
