Replacing a Sealy SpringFree Beachside latex mattress.

I’m presently awaiting word on warranty for my Stearns/Sealy mattress and was hoping you could help out a bit.  Your site is quite informative and seeing the “levels” of current mattresses is really handy.

I was hoping that you might know the level of my non current mattresses.   We started with a Stearns Swanwick that lasted almost 5 years.  When it failed we opted for a Sealy SpringFree Beachside latex (overstatement) which is now mush after 4 years.   

I’d like to go at my local dealer armed with as much info as possible which I did not do when I did the Beachside replacement.  I’m looking to draw some sort of comparison to my old models and if you could help that would be great.

Hi John,

You have a couple of good options open to you...none of which is an equivalent replacement for the Beachside.

Sealy owned S&F. Now, Tempurpedic owns them both. Sealy stopped making the SpringFree line, shortly after you bought your Beachside.

They re-introduced it using the S&F label as the Stearns & Foster Luxury Latex Collection.

That too, is now discontinued. I don't believe Tempurpedic is interested in selling latex...only memory foam.

The problem with your mattress is not the latex, but the soft poly foam that is on top of the latex. It's that 2" of poly foam that has mushed up on you.

You can't get an equivalent replacement from them now, since none exisits.

Rather than fool around with all the junk memory foam they have to offer, I suggest that you flip that mattress over.

You'll find that the unfinished underside shows the firm latex core...with no poly foam.

Once you flip it, you'll see that the mattress is now quite firm...likely to be too firm to sleep on comfortably.

All you need to do is to add 2" of soft, all natural Talalay latex to that, and you will be good to go for many more years.

Together, you'll have all the comfort and support you need...comfort and support that won't wear out like the poly foam on the top side of the mattress.

It will be your most cost effective, long term solution.

Simmons Beautyrest World Class Annapolis Place or Black Ava Mattress?‏

 Your blog is great!  I’m considering buying a mattress set from your website.  Two years ago I got a Sealy Castle Hill Luxury Firm Queen at Macy’s, and it felt great for the first 4-6 months but then started getting soft and sagging.  After reading your blog, I’m considering the luxury firm Beautyrest Annapolis Place or Black Ava.  I went to my local mattress stores to try them out.  The Ava was carried by the stores but I couldn’t find the Annapolis so I tried a Pacific 1000 which I think is similar.  They both felt nice and firm – the Pacific 1000 was a bit softer of the two but the Ava seemed really luxurious.  Would you recommend the Ava or Annapolis for me…or would either work well?  I’m 5’10” & 160 pounds, sleep alone on my side, and get shoulder/mid-back pain sometimes.  Also, I'm assuming you would recommend a 2 inch Talalay latex topper with either of those mattresses but wanted to double check given my size and sleeping position.  Finally, is the delivery time about 2 weeks for mattresses and toppers?

Hi Brent,

At your size, I'd recommend the Annapolis Place in Luxury Firm, with a 2" soft Talalay Latex foam mattress topper.

There's no need to bear the extra expense of the Black Ava, which we recommend for those about 200 lbs., or so.

The Pacific Series 1000 is a west coast label and it is virtually the same as the World Class models sold elsewhere,

It does take approx. 2 weeks for delivery of both items. Delivery is free and there's no sales tax.

Hi John,
It's less about brand these days. It's the specs that count and there are good choices and bad from almost every brand.
Pillowtops and memory foam are the things to avoid. With a tight top mattress, (non-pillowtop), you can always add a topper if you want more surface softness.
The toppers can easily be replaced when needed, without having to buy a new mattress. As the pillowtop part is the first thing to go, the latex foam topper solution is the only thing that makes sense.
Start off with the two-sided Therapedic Cameo in firm and add 2" of soft Talalay Latex foam for surface comfort.

Your DDD requires very firm support to retard the progress of your discs deteriorating to the point of becoming herniated.

Best mattress for my 2 year old child?

I was wondering if you could recommend a mattress for my 2 year old, he is just coming from his crib, and we are planning on buying a double, but have been doing some research as the what mattress is best for his growing little body, and offers the best support as well as comfort. I have read that foam and memory foam are not good for growing kids, and the stick with the innerspring style, should I stick with firmer rather than softer?

Hi Tami,

A growing body need firm, yet contouring support to maintain their spine's natural alignment.

"Best", would be an all natural latex mattress.

However, an all latex mattress can be pricey.

Our more affordable and most common recommendation is a luxury firm Simmons Beautyrest mattress, which uses individually pocketed coils to achieve the proper support.

Sealy Posturepedic Strathmore mattress.

The closest thing in the Posturepedic line to that older Strathmore model is the Joyce Street.

The model name will be different at every store, so you'll shop for it by asking for the E Level Posturepepdic.

It's available in cushion firm or plush. For a bad back, I'd suggest getting the cushion firm.

Once you have it, should you find that you would prefer a softer surface feel, add a 2" soft Latex foam mattress topper.

Latex is all natural, extremely comfortable and the most resilient upholstery material available. It provides surface comfort without sacrificing the underlying firm support that your husband is going to need. Delivery is free, nationwide and there is no sales tax.

Older Adjustable bed bases sold by Simmons were made by Leggett & Platt. The have a service number and calling them directly is the easiest way to get parts and service.

Simmons TruEnergy Noelle Mattress & Soft Latex Foam Topper.

I recently bought a Queen sized Simmons TruEnergy Noelle from a local retailer.  The bed felt comfortable at the store and I spent a considerable amount of time trying out different mattresses.  I really liked the support and comfort that this mattress offered in the store.  When I got my new mattress it was much more firm than the model in the store.  I called the mattress store and they told me that I should give it some time as there is a “break in period”.  I have been sleeping on the mattress for two weeks now and it is a bit more comfortable, however when I wake up in the morning my neck and shoulders are sore.

My previous mattress was a Spring Air Four Seasons Back Supporter.  This is a pillow top model that is 15-years-old.  My hips used to hurt on this bed.  My hips don’t hurt on the new bed but now I have shoulder and neck pain, which I have never had before.  I am thinking that I will return the mattress to the store.  I am not sure if I will exchange it for ask for a refund.  I was thinking that I would get another pillow top but I have been reading the information on your site that says that pillow tops do not maintain their shape and comfort for long.  Do you have any suggestions for someone like me?  I have considered latex foam but it seems to be really expensive and is likely out of my budget.  I just want to be comfortable without being in pain.

A queen size 2" soft latex foam topper will run you $349.99. It's the best money you'll ever spend. Add it to the mattress you have and you'll be good to go for many years.

Back & Hip Pain on a Sealy Posturpedic Euro Pillowtop mattress.

Hi Pete. We bought a Sealy Posturpedic Euro Pillowtop mattress (kind of soft due to pillowtop) but with the center core system I feel it's good when I sleep on my back. But if try to sleep on sides, I get the low back pain and hip pain. I've slept on this mattress for at least 4 weeks. I feel the pain every once in a while. Should I change the
mattress to Sealy memory foam? Will it help me?

Since the line changed in June of 2011, we stopped recommending Sealy products, except for their lower end Posture Promo models. Memory foam is your problem. Since Tempurpedic bought them last year, we stopped carrying that brand altogether. Going to a memory foam mattress will only increase your problems.
You should read more about what others say about memory foam and pillowtops. You need a whole new perspective before you continuing.

Mattress Buying Advice Needed.

Hi Sheila,

My advice is to not be lead by initial comfort. The mattress you're considering is about as bad a choice as you can make.

Add a 2" layer of soft Talalay latex foam to a reasonably firm mattress and you will find support and comfort that lasts for many years. 

Give in to the initial comfort of the mattress you tried, and you'll be back to square one within months....not years.

Read about memory foam and pillowtops...the very things to avoid.
