Latex Foam Mattress Topper to Canada.

After a few weeks of sleeping wonderfully on an air mattress while my house was for sale, it occurred to me that I am not sleeping well on my 6 year old, expensive Beautyrest mattress mainly because I am too hot. Also, the copious padding on top is indented in various places. Could you please suggest a solution short of buying a new mattress? I have never used a topper .... Would this help both cooling and making it firmer? If so, could recommend a particular one for a king that could be shipped to Canada?

Hi Tom,
That's an easy fix.
Flip your mattress over. The underside is much firmer.
Add one of these latex topper to it after you flip it it, and you'll have what you want and need...firm support and a comfortable sleeping surface.

Mattress for a child...Simmons Beautyrest.

My favorite recommendation for children is a Classic Beautyrest by Simmons.

The independent movement of the coils insures proper spinal alignment.

Scoliosis...Two-sided Firm Cameo Mattress by Therapedic.

It's pretty old, probably 10 years + a beauty rest Simmons exquisite ultimate extra firm. I just wake up in pain everyday, and recently I wake up at night and my back is killing me! I am assuming it's just gotten old and maybe is putting pressure on my spine. I think it is too soft now.

Good. That was very helpful information.
Have you used this bed since it was new?
Has your scoliosis gotten worse over the past 10 years?
How long has the mattress been causing you pain?
First thing, flip the mattress over. The underside will be firmer.
This should allow you to sleep better right away.
There are a couple of options.
Obviously, a new mattress is one.
Another would be to add a layer of firm latex to the underside of the mattress after you flip it...assuming that the underside relieves your pain. The latex topper added to that will improve your quality of sleep.
This is a much lower cost solution that, if successful, will put off the purchase of a new mattress for a few years.
If you had been happy with the extra firm Beautyrest for a number of years, going with another like it is a logical solution. If being firmer would have been better all along, there are other good choices that will last longer.
But first, flip the mattress and let me know tomorrow how that worked for you.
This kind of information will be important to determine your best option for a long term solution.

I have used it since it was new. I haven't been checked in years to see if the scoliosis has progressed
But the last few months I have noticed that waking up has gotten more and more painful in the morning. Unfortunately, this mattress is in bad shape and the side in sleeping in now is the flipped side! Haha I will flip it again and hopefully it will hold me down until I find the perfect one. Besides the one I have, anything you suggest that will be as good or better? Thanks.

The Beautyrest uses an individually pocketed coil system, which provides a firm, yet contouring independent suspension type of support.
This has worked well for you for a long time...and I hate to fool around with success....especially considering the sensitive natural of your scoliosis.
Going with an interlocking coil unit, which provides a more rigid, less contouring support, is one of the other option. A firm, all latex mattress is yet another option.
I'm inclined to advise you to stay with what has worked for you.
Given your size, there's no need to spend a lot. An extra firm Classic Beautyrest would be fine...probably along the lines of what you have now.
My main concern is the memory foam used in today's mattresses that would not be in yours.
Today's one-sided models, using memory foam, are designed to fail more quickly than those made 10 years ago.
My fear is that your length of years of comfort will be far shorter than you have currently experienced.
Tell me, what happens when you lie down on the floor? Is your pain relieved?

Yes, I really want something I can keep for some time. I've read good things about the latex mattresses but I'm not familiar with them outside of that.

An all latex mattress for you, would not be my first choice.
Any all foam mattress will have a certain amount of give to it....which I doubt will work for you, pain wise.
Based on everything we've discussed, I'm recommending a mattress that is quite firm, well made and long lasting, with no memory foam in it.
It's a two sided mattress made by Therapedic, called the Cameo firm.

Memory Foam Mattress Not Comfortable.

Hi Jeane,

You may not need a new mattress. Memory foam is worthless for support or comfort, once it loses it's resiliency. However, the memory foam is supported by high density poly foam.

Flip that mattress over. The underside is firmer, but still contours. If anything, all you'll need is a latex foam topper to make the underside of that mattress comfortable...if, you find it to be too firm.

So, first things first. Flip your mattress over and let me know, tomorrow, how you feel after sleeping on it tonight.

Shoulder Pain, Beautyrest Mattress & Soft Latex Foam Topper.

OK, I'm a guy and you've sold me on the idea of putting a $500 2" latex foam topper on a new "firm" Simmons mattress. I'm 60, 5'8" 160 lbs, my wife is 57, 5'3" and 120 lbs. I have chronic shoulder pain and both of us are side sleepers. I accept that I'll have to replace the mattress in 5 years or so but I'd go with the firmer 13.5 gauge coil to maybe get 8 years as long as the firmer heavier coil is conforming enough. My question is-----If I'm going to add the 2" topper what BeautyRest firm mattress model do I need underneath??? The basic 800 coil Beauty Rest with some foam layers and quilt on top or the very expensive Recharge models with multiple layers of foams, some of which may be non conforming memory foam that will break down? 
If we're going to sleep right on top of the latex topper can we be less concerned with the makeup of the mattress and box springs as far as fabric selection. Many mattresses feature "cotton and or wool layers and different types of quilting that are expensive. if were sleeping on the latex, isn't the function of the mattress and box springs to act as a supporting foundation to the latex pad? With this in mind, I would think that some of more basic Beautyrests might work out just fine without all the expensive bells and whistles.

Hi Steve,

Right you are! The latex topper absorbs much of your body weight, which leaves less work for the mattress.

Normally, I would recommend the starting World Class Beautyrest model for adults. But because you are both slender and light weight, you can get away with a Classic.

The World Class model we recommend is the Annapolis Place in luxury firm. The classic model you can go with is the Flatbrook luxury form.

(The Flatbrook is a bit cushier than the Lumberton, which has a stiffer surface feel. The Flatbrook over the Lumberton because of your shoulder)

A firm mattress & a soft latex foam topper.

Your price range is so high, you can afford an all latex mattress.

For a good quality innerspring mattress with a latex topper won't cost nearly that much.

In a king size, our most popular combination mattress/latex topper will run you $2100 total.

 That particular combination is for a World Class Beautyrest Annapolis Place in luxury firm with a 2" soft Talalay Latex foam topper.

The Beautyrest uses an individually pocketed coil unit, where the coils move independently from one another. This contouring base support is a good choice for female side sleepers, as it gives better at the hip.

 The Beautyrests use some memory foam. However, the memory foam that Simmons uses is a higher grade that what is commonly used by other brands.

It's far less temperature sensitive and a lot more resilient than common memory foam. And while it will wear better, there is still the chemical issue.

 To eliminate memory foam all together, we some two sided mattresses that we had made. They are very high quality and very long lasting.

Over the 5 years they have been on the market, there have been zero complaints.

Latex Foam Topper for a Too Firm Mattress.

My questions are:

Will a 1.5 inch topper be sufficient to provide the soft comfort I obviously need? Or do I need a 2 inch topper?

Which of the ones you offer is best for the problem I have with the Cameo Plush? I like the cushy feel of a featherbed, like the feel of high-end hotel mattresses.

The 2" does a much better job than the 1.5" model.

Two inches of Soft Talalay latex is the one you want...same as the one we use at home.

You'll find that the latex foam toppers are on sale and the price for the one you want will reduce by $50 when you check out.

The two-sided Therapedic Medi-Coil models are especially designed to hold that kind of weight long term. I suggest starting with the "plush" model...as it is a bit more comfortable than the firm.

A Latex foam mattress topper for my new and old bed.

Hello, I hope someone is still minding this email as I am in need of some help.  We have just purchased a new mattress and are trying to decide if it is the one for us before our trial time is up.  In 2002 we bought a Stearns & Foster Chesterbury and we have loved it.  But recently I have been having a lot of pain in my hip & leg while sleeping.  I am a side sleeper and so is my husband.  I have gained some weight and I now weigh about 200lbs, and my husband weighs about 180 and he also is a side sleeper & he snores!  Anyway, the person at the mattress store that we purchase our mattress said we needed a firmer mattress, he had a computer type thing that we answered questions and we laid on the bed and it popped out a print out and told us what bed we needed.  He showed us several which was supposed to be in our comfort level and we finally decided on one.  We got the Simmons beauty rest Black “Evie”.  It is call a luxury firm.  It has a pillow top and is a tall mattress.  Anyway, it felt good at store, soft, but not as good as some of the plush beds I tried, which the sales person said was not for me if I was having problems and I needed the extra support because of our weight.  But after getting it home, I think it feels soft when I first lay down, but then it gets hard.  And I still have the pain in my hip and leg and I am tossing and turning all night, and wake up sore.  They say I need to give it 30 days and it will soften, but I’m not sure. Plus I have been reading the bad reviews on Simmons mattress and the poor customer service, and everyone is having problems with the beds sagging after just a few months, I don’t want to go through this, I just want a good mattress that doesn’t cause me pain while I sleep.  I feel I need a softer mattress.  I want a bed that when I come home and lay in it I love it, and that’s the the way it was with my old S&F Chesterbury.  And it still feels that way when I lay on it, but during the night and in the morning I wake up sore, just think it’s too old.  Can you tell me if there is a S&F comparable to that one?

The time to research is before you buy.

A pillowtop model is a poor choice for heavy people. The foams in the pillowtop will compress quickly, losing much of its initial comfort within months.

The Ava would have been a better choice...adding to it a 2" layer of soft Talalay latex foam for surface comfort that lasts for years.

In fact, that latex mattress topper is likely to have been all you needed, added to your Chesterbury.

The quality of your old mattress was very high. The padding may have compressed, but the coil unit is still providing adequate support. All it needed was the latex topper to restore the surface comfort.

Simmons' poor reviews stem from all the "plush" Beautyrests that are sold. The plush models are so consistently a problem, we don't even list them on our website.

You bought a firm. Except for the usual problems with pillowtops, your firm Beautyrest will hold up well.
