Firm Sealy mattress with a Latex foam topper.

Our current bed has a pillowtop and was good for first year but growing valleys ever since and leading to leg/back pain. Generally like softer/plush types and the best bed we have in house is an old Sealy Dorset Plush in guestroom. Don't mind buying online but really want to test bed out first...Thoughts?

Hi Neal,
Don't feel bad. Consumer Reports said that the mattress industry was way too complex for them to make heads or tails out of, and consequently, had no recommendations.

After getting some flack for their honesty, they have published 3 subsequent issues, in which they got it all wrong.
Being able to try the mattress doesn't do much good. Doing so tells you nothing about how it will wear, and, the floor samples are already broken in. A new mattress will feel firmer.
You do have a distinct advantage. The Dorset was a great mattress for the money and is still being made, albeit with a different model name.
We no longer carry Sealy. They are now owned by Tempurpedic. Sears has that mattress as the Sealy Wallach plush...no change in specifications from the old Dorset model.
Add a 2" soft Talalay latex foam mattress topper to it, and you'll have all the support and comfort you want.

Hotel Mattress & Memory Foam

Both my husband and I are generally non discriminatory sleepers-back, front, side, but I am limited to my side when pregnant. We are 5'6" to 5'10", have athletic builds and are both under 200lbs. 
What do you suggest?

Hi Mairghread,

Memory foam consists of 61 different chemicals. Some of them are toxic and a couple of them are known carcinogens.

Besides being a health hazard, they don't work well. Memory foam is a temperature sensitive material that softens and sinks as it warms from the heat your body gives off.

From this repeated softening, it quickly loses its support. In a very short time, you'll sink through it as if it weren't even there. Besides being dangerous, it's worthless for the job you want it to do.

Since you have so much time before you need to buy, I suggest using a majority of that time in understanding about mattresses, what your body needs, what materials work and what materials don't work. You're already off to a very poor start. 

Having purchased memory foam, it's obvious to me that you are following the hype. Continue to do so, and you will make an expensive and painful mistake.

 There's little point in offering a recommendation until you have altered your mindset.

Mattress, What's New in Latex Foam.

The Las Vegas Furniture Market is winding down.

There is a new all-natural latex foam for mattresses and toppers.

Vytex Latex was introduced this week. This is the first 100% Allergen Free Latex Foam ever made.

While most of the allergen, (The Protein), is removed from all other latex, which allows it to be called "hypo-allergenic", a little of the protein remains.

This allergen is reacted to topically, meaning you have to touch it to feel the effects...a common occurrence with latex gloves and bandages.

With most latex mattresses, you would have, usually, 3 layers of fabric that prevent you from reacting to it if you do have a latex allergy.

Back Pain, Firm Mattress w/ Latex Foam Topper.

Shopping by comfort is what the mattress industry wants you to do. The result of doing so, is the need to replace your mattress every couple/few years.

It's been 4 years now and probably needed replacing well before now. 

Yours, is a prime example of what happens when you shop at stores with the focus on comfort and no quality products to back it up.

...because they sell and sell easily. They aren't worth a damn to you, the consumer, for very long...but they are a real money maker for the retailer and manufacturer.

The salespeople you encounter haven't a clue as to what is a good bed for you, nor do they care. They care about one thing and one thing only...making the sale.

Memory foam is a huge part of the mattress industry and one of the major reasons why mattresses fail so quickly. No only does memory foam perform poorly, losing its support much too quickly,

it's also a health hazard...comprised of 61 different chemicals...some, of which, are toxic and a couple that are carcinogenic. 

The truly diabolical thing about memory foam is that it returns to its original shape when you get off of it. In other words, you will not likely prevail in a warranty claim.

Besides the initial comfort, you are also guaranteed comfort for a short period of time...which amounts to nothing more than a "one-two sucker punch". Consumers fall for this ploy constantly.

Many won't buy without the comfort exchange warranty, even though it does little good when all you have to choose from is pure junk.

Just so you know, the manufacturers do not participate in this comfort exchange. The retailer cannot send a mattress back to the factory for credit under those conditions.

What that means to many of you is that the mattress you buy stands a good chance of being a mattress that someone else has returned. It happens all the time.

Sorry for the rant, Matthew. Your question showcases the normal course of events...and a problem faced by millions of mattress shoppers in today's market.

 As for you, a Classic Beautyrest is something we recommend for children and guest rooms...or for people a lot lighter in weight that you. That's not to say that you are heavy, just too heavy for that mattress. Even so, there is a way to go about this with a Classic Beautyrest at adult weight....recognizing that many people simply don't have the money for something more expensive.

Going with that, you have to understand that the upholstery materials used are designed to fail...polyurethane foam, memory foam and pillowtops. You simply can't win if you are going to rely on what the mattress industry is selling.

Each link provided in this answer will educate you. An properly educated consumer won't fall into the trap that was set for you and the millions of others who shop for a mattress the way you did. (The mis-information you get from salespeople at stores, is not a proper education.) The lack of proper training has gotten so bad, over the years, that there is little point in even going there. The are now only trained in how to "make the sale"...and trying floor samples is more likely to sucker punch you into buying a bad mattress...which is what they are designed to do.

 

The Simmons Beautyrest World Class Annapolis Place in Luxury Firm is the mattress I would recommend for adult weight....adding the latex topper to that.

The base model Classic Lumberton luxury firm model will do if that is what your budget dictates.

The latex foam topper softens only the surface and does not negate the underlying for support of the mattress, which is something your herniated disc requires.

Does my Sealy Posturpedic Plus-Burkewood Plush Pillow Top Mattress work with an adjustable bed base?‏

The best place to get that information is from the retailer where you bought that mattress.

Model names for the same mattresses are different at every store. 

Or you can call Sealy directly to see if your mattress is compatible with an adjustable bed base.

Back, neck & shoulder pain from my Tempurpedic mattress.

We have a Tempurpedic mattress, which has not been very pleasant to sleep on.  After several months of discomfort, we purchased a three inch memory foam topper, with memory foam pillows, thinking that was our problem.  This situation has worsened and the bed is sleeping hot.  I now have neck pain and shoulder pain, and my wife has lower back pain and shoulder pains.  Both of our arms and hands tend to tingle and fall asleep.  I'm currently up typing this, because I can not sleep, due to the severe pain in my left shoulder and left side of my neck.  I've noticed you mentioned using a latex topper, will that help us and why would it help our situation.  Please help, we are in pain!!! Memory foam, the stuff that's in your Tempurpedic and topper, is a temperature sensitive material. It sinks as it warms from your body heat...terrible stuff...you sink thru it, with no support.

Latex, conversely, is pressure sensitive and has been the best material available for comfort and pressure point relief for the past century, just about.

You don't sink thru it and the comfort lasts for many years.

Adding a layer of soft latex foam, 2" thick will transform your expensively disappointing Tempurpedic into a sleep system that delivers what they promised you to begin with...and, latex sleeps much cooler. It's all natural with no chemical off-gassing. 

There's nothing like the value of a quality product.

I bought a Tempurpedic several years ago and have disliked it.  My body seems to have made a trench.  When I turn over to the other side of my queen size bed, it's like climbing a small hill!  They did replace it, but I still don't like it.  Also, I like to sleep cool, not warm.

I'm 68, 5'5" tall, average weight.  I have arthritis and fibromyalgia, but am doing quite well.  I sleep pretty well, despite the fact I don't like my mattress.

I really love my sister and BIL's sleep number bed. However, it seemed a waste since I do sleep alone.  I could get a single control, but it's still quite pricey.

Any other answers I could provide for you to tell me what topper I need?

Arthritis, hip neck & back pain, Simmons Black Ava & Latex Foam Mattress Topper.

Hi Kyle,
None of your problems get better with age, so I'm particularly sorry to hear that you have all this at such a young age.
Let me start with the problems that a mattress doesn't help. For me, my worst pain is in my neck and it's not my wife. It's the arthritis. I have tried everything. A pillow is helpful in this, but they wear out so quickly, especially if you're a hot head like me and perspire at night. The moisture will beak down most materials. Latex pillows last the longest. My wife, who also has neck pain, loves her latex pillow. I find it too thick to keep my head properly aligned with my spine...which is an important factor in minimizing that pain. Three "Extra Strength Excedrin" works in about 20 minutes. But for some, it causes stomach upset. As recent residents of California, we found something that works fast and provides pain relief that lasts a long time. If you have access to medical marijuana, they make a salve that you rub into the affected area. The pain is almost immediately and there are no side effects. That is to say, it doesn't make you high. It just works and works well.
Sleep Apnea is another issue we have in common. I too, had a cpap machine. It was the most annoying thing, trying to sleep with that mask strapped to my face. Is occurred to me that the only person really suffering from it, was my wife. So, I got her ear plugs and got rid of the machine.
You might try sleeping in a slight incline. That will also help.
Neither of you have a weight concern, so your choices for a mattress are greater.
However, the key to comfort that won't quit on you in a short couple of years, is latex. By adding a 2" soft latex foam topper to a reasonably firm, well made, basic mattress, you can have all the comfort and support you can want or need...and have it provide them long term.
If going with a Simmons model, plush/firm is definitely the way to go. You can't go wrong with a soft latex topper on any Simmons luxury firm model...a comfort choice that is available at any level in their line.
If money isn't a great concern, you might get their best and the current model of the one we have at home...the Beautyrest Black Ava in luxury firm. I find it to be perfectly comfortable just the way it comes. My wife, on the other hand, is more shapely and has a sore hip. With the 2" soft Talalay latex foam topper is feels like a million bucks....just an incredibly comfortable feel without sacrificing the firm underlying support. Quality is always your best value.
