My husband's medical condition is complicated: disc problems in his back, also a neck pain that has to be fixed by an operation. He also has pain in his hip and legs with no special diagnosis by the doctors. About me, I have sciatic pain and also lumbar lordosis posture which I prefer a firm bed to sleep on.
we both would like a firm mattress. The mattress I recently bought was supposed to be a firm one, but it is not. So we are returning it.
My husband is 150 LB. with 5.5' height, and my weight is 160 with 5' height.
Peter, in our situation I don't really care about the cost. We are not rich, but really need a good sleep to charge us for a daily activity.
Please let me know the right mattress for my husband and I.
Hi Masi,
There are a couple of things that you need to understand.
"I don't really care about the cost", you said.
An expensive mattress will not give you what you need. The expensive models are made to have a luxurious feel...making them easier to sell. However, a too well padded mattress isn't good for anyone in terms of support....and least of all, people with conditions like yours.
Every body requires some degree of firm support. For disc problems, it needs to have a stiffer feel than for those with a healthy back.
More importantly, it has to remain firm over many years. Many of today's mattresses are made to wear quickly and be replaced frequently. This is not acceptable for someone with a sensitive back. So, we need to start you off with a very firm mattress that will remain that way over a good long time.
Our best for that is a two-sided mattress that we have available. It's an old fashioned style, flippable mattress that will remain firm for you, well beyond the 10 year warranty that comes with it. And while it is of very high quality, it isn't terribly expensive.

There is more. This mattress provides the needed support. It does not provide much in the way of surface comfort.
I recommend adding to that, a 2" layer of all-natural Talalay Latex foam.
This product is the highest quality upholstery material available and will retain its comfort without losing its shape over many years.
My wife and I use this same mattress topper at home. We are much heavier than the two of you. Our topper is in like new condition, both in look and feel. It is 5 years old.
The latex topper will relieve your pressure points and relax your muscles, which will give you a much more comfortable sleeping surface. And, it sleeps cool.
You will not sink through it. It holds you up. A "Zero Gravity" feel is the best way to describe it.
Keep in mind that it is only 2" thick. It will not negate the firm support you get from the mattress.
Together, you have everything your body needs...firm support for the inside of your body and a comfortable sleeping surface for the outside of your body.
Here are links to that...an overview, customer feedback...which is quite impressive, and to that specific item.
Latex Mattress Topper
Lastly, there is a pillow that I have recently begun to recommend for people with neck pain.
I was given this pillow at the last furniture market I attended, this past January. I have arthritis in my neck, which has caused me a lot of continual, chronic pain.
Since using this pillow, I experience most days with no pain. The pain I do get is occasional and much less in degree than before.
The pillow is made of finely chopped latex. It's very similar to having a feather pillow, but it doesn't break down and flatten out the way feather pillows do.
The finely chopped latex can be manipulated...molded to fit you just the way you want. It allows you to properly align your head and neck with your spine as you sleep.
This alignment is the key to reducing inflammation, which reduces the pain. It certainly won't fix what's wrong, but it will reduce his pain.
