Hi Amiee,
As you may have been experiencing, there aren't mattresses made to support your weights....at least, not mass produced one-sided mattresses.
We had some two-sided mattresses made that will hold you.
The Medi-Coil Permatuft models are especially made to support your weights, and more. My largest customers top 500 lbs with these models. 

I'd suggest the plush with latex. It's not plush, as plush beds go, and you can always soften the surface more to suit your taste with a latex topper.

Two-Sided Mattress, Medi-Coil vs. Cameo

I have been reading your very informative blog for quite some time and have decided that your two sided mattress is the best choice for me (6'1" 210 pound side sleeper) and my wife (5'5" 145 pound side sleeper). I wouldn't suggest the Medi-Coil for you. It's more mattress than you need. The Medi-Coil was designed to hold people who are extraordinarily heavy. My customers who have the Medi-Coil, range in weight between 300 and 500+ pounds.
The Cameo plush is the one to look at. It's comfortable enough, that it doesn't need a topper....and it's tested to keep its shape under larger people than you.

Spend a little less and get the Cameo. It's all you need and it will serve you well over the years to come.

Simmons vs. other "S" brands, Latex Mattresses

In comparing the "S" brands, Simmons has the edge in a number of ways. Only Simmons uses a pre-compressed, individually pocketed coil system. The pockets of the Beautyrest coils are heat sealed near the center, which allow the coils to move independently. In the other "S" brands, the pockets are heat sealed at the top and bottom, reducing the independent movement of the coils. Translation: Motion reduction is greater in the Simmons.

Also, most mattresses use some memory foam. The memory foam used by Simmons has a quick response foam and far less temperature sensitive than the regular memory foam used by the other "S" brands. 

There is some synthetic latex used in a few of the Stearns & Foster models.

S&F Lucas Park Mattress, lower back pain, Latex Topper

Yes. A softer sleeping surface will alleviate your pain and give you a more comfortable and deeper night's sleep.

But, no. A softer mattress is not the way to go about getting what you want. The softer mattress uses materials that break down quickly. While initially more comfortable, softer mattresses lose their shape and comfort far too soon. However, there is a way to get what you want and have it be a long term solution for you.

Add to that 2" of soft Talalay latex and you'll have what you want without sacrificing the firm support your spine needs. Latex is far more comfortable than the foams typically used to make a mattress softer....and far more resilient. Tempurpedic mattress sleeps very warm. A Latex topper will sleep cool.

A latex topper on our Sealy Posturepedic mattress

We recently had a warranty replacement on our mattress bought a year ago thru a chain store. Thanks to the informative info in your blog we knew to go for the Sealy Posturepedic in a Cushion Firm, instead of the plush model that failed. It's perfect comfort and firmness right from the first night! We've read where you recommend latex mattress toppers to soften a mattress, but don't know if one would also help keep this particular mattress from impressions and breaking down. Is this a concern if we rotate it monthly? If so, would you suggest a firmer/thinner latex topper? We don't want a softer surface and don't like a sinking into the bed feel, just want to maintain it as is. Hubby 6'2" 210 lbs, wife 5'4" 155 lbs, both side sleepers. For the purposes of extending the life of the mattress you have...avoiding premature body impressions...and to maintain the feel of the cushion firm mattress, all you need is the thinner 1.5" Dunlop latex topper. If you want a little softer surface feel, then go with the Soft Talalay, also at 1.5".
