I have some lumbar degenerative disc problems and a thoracic 12 herniation. We have a Sealy Gardenvine Latex that has real problems with more than 2 inch indentions. I am looking at Simmons Beautyrest but they all have different names. 
I am 5 ' and weigh 115 and husband is 6' 180. I worry about the pillow top not holding up and wonder what is the actual difference of these mattress really is. Does the luxury plush have the same foundation and support as the firm ? Any advice would be greatly appreciated about the stearns differences.

Hi Sandy,
To make matters worse, the model names are different at every store. 
A pillowtop is not the way to get the cushioning you need for your shoulders and hips. Pillowtops are filled with poly foam and/or memory foam. At the surface, Latex does the best job of relieving those pressure points and relaxing muscles. It doesn't flatten out like poly and memory foam. It doesn't get hot like memory foam and it doesn't off-gas dangerous toxic chemicals like memory foam. And latex lasts a whole lot longer. as a bonus, latex will absorb much of your body's weight and the mattress under it will last longer. Now, THAT, is real value for your money.

To support discs that are degenerative and herniated, you need a very firm mattress. The 2" soft Talalay latex mattress topper added to that will provide the comfortable sleeping surface you need to sleep deeply, without sacrificing the underlying firm support. The mattress I have in mind is the Simmons Beautyrest World Class Dartmouth Drive Ultimate Firm.

Two-Sided Therapedic Cameo plush, best replacement for the old S&F Knightsbridge

We currently have a Stearns and Foster Knightsbridge pillowtop - double sided that we bought around 2001. It still seems fine but we think it's probably time to replace it. We don't want a unit that can't be flipped since we have been religious about flipping the one we have. I've done a reasonable amount of research and learned that latex is the longest lasting mattress as long as it is natural latex. I'm looking at the Pure Bliss Nature in a king. The Knightsbridge was the last of the good pillowtops. I had one at home at that time....and it was a favorite of mine, to recommend.
The quality of that mattress is no longer available. The mattress industry changed almost immediately after you bought that mattress. You should consider yourself lucky that your timing was so good.

Simmons Beautyrest Black Bray & Latex Topper for a large man with herniated discs.

My husband suffers from 2 herniated discs and one tear, the mattress we currently have is a soft top and seems to be making matters worse. 
Could you please make a recommendation for him with support he needs? He is a 6'4 man and weighs 250 lbs. also I wonder about the latex toppers and if that is a good choice, if so soft, medium or hard?

Hi Anne,
A soft sleeping surface is not usually the problem. It's too great a depth of softness, as is provided by so many of today's mattresses.
He does need firm support, but a soft latex topper is there for the comfort, not the support.
Starting off with a mattress that provides the correct support step one. The 2" soft Talalay latex topper you add for comfort and longevity.

Hello, my name is Shane I purchased a new Sealy gel plush mattress it is very comfortable and I sleep fine for the most part. The only problem is it sags a little in the middle and I do not think I am getting adequate support as I think I may be getting lower back pain from the mattress. Hi Shane,

"Gel" is the latest greatest gimmick to come along. To be accurate, the gel, itself, is fine. It does no harm. And, it does no good. It's a product used to mask the heat of the dangerous memory foam that's used with it. The problem with your mattress isn't the gel, it's the memory foam. With or without the gel, memory foam is the worst material ever invented for use in or as a mattress.

It's very comfortable and sells well. But, it doesn't hold up worth a damn...not to mention the smell, the heat, the toxic chemical off gassing which has resulted in a myriad of respiratory problems to a very many people over the years. 

 

What you said in your first sentence was like saying, "the pizzeria down the street makes a good tasting pizza, but it gives me heartburn and the crust is always soggy". If I then told you there was a pizzeria around the corner that made a much better pizza without giving you heart burn and where the crust was always nice and crispy, you'd go and try it...wouldn't you?

A reasonable person would do just that...go and try the pizzeria that was recommended to them.

The pizzeria down the street does much more business...always busy since they opened 20 years ago...because it's right on the main drag...right next door to the 7-11 and does a lot of advertising...you're always getting their menu in with your Sunday newspaper.

The pizzeria around the corner isn't on the path of your normal routine...a little out of the way...and they don't spend much on advertising...an old family pizzeria that's been there for 90 years. Their business comes from the older folks and their kids who've lived there from when the town was smaller. All of the more recent residents go to the one down the street.

THIS, is the difference between memory foam and latex. Except that memory foam will make you sick and hurt your back....where the pizza from down the street isn't THAT bad.

So, as my new neighbor, from the guy who's lived here all his life, I'm turning you on to that old pizzeria. I guarantee you will never go back to buying the pizza from down the street ever again.

A two-sided mattress like my 25 year old Serta

I stumbled across your website while looking for mattresses. I am a 50 year old female that weighs 108 pounds. My current mattress is a Serta on a platform bed with slats and is about 25 years old. I have recently started having lower back pain and am not sure if it is due to the mattress but I do toss and turn a lot every night. I am thinking it is time for a new mattress but not sure what to replace mine with. I have tried laying on a few in the stores but most feel too cushy and I definitely do not like the memory foam. Is there a difference between simmons, sealy, and serta? Any recommendations that may be similar to my old two-sided mattress? Thank you for your advice.

You're in for quite a shock, considering how old your mattress is. Like most things you buy today, "They just don't make 'em like that anymore", is the phrase that applies.
My TV has a better picture and my car is more fuel efficient and breaks down less frequently....but I can't think of anything else that's improved.
The mattress industry has taken the biggest hit in quality, especially over the past 10 years. What they do do better, is sell. It's now a disposable item, making you a regular customer instead of one that comes out of the woodwork every quarter century. They've done a great job of ratcheting up the BS and they will promise you the moon and the stars, if that's what it takes to make the sale.
Buying a mattress isn't the ordinary job of going to the store and picking one out and that being that....like it used to be. Now, you're swimming with the sharks. It's not just an item to buy. It's a mine field to walk through. It's worse than how it was to buy a used car.
I needed to prepare you for this. Take those first steps out into the mattress world. Don't buy anything the first time out.
Come back and talk to me when you've shopped at a couple/few stores. 

If going with one of our two-sided models, the Cameo plush is the most comfortable of them.

A mattress strong enough and the right height for large disabled man

Hi:

Recently bought a queen size mattress and reduced height box springs which I am returning.

Here is our problem:

I am disabled from a prior stroke and overweight (350 pounds) and wife is about 200 pounds.

I need a mattress and box springs that is not so tall that I can sit down on the top (without having to boost myself upward to a  high top). In other words, near sitting height which we have used in many hotels. The other mattress sagged at the edge and where I laid and I kept having the feeling that I was going to virtually roll off the bed (that was after less than 30 days and it was an extra firm). So, strong support is essential.

Hi Jim,

The most supportive mattress I have, is one that I had made specifically to hold people your size.

However, for prolonged seating, I suggest a chair. Mattresses are made to support you in a prone position. They will tolerate a seated potion for short periods, like to aid you in getting dressed, but none will hold 350 lbs. in a seated position without developing an imprint at that spot. And even when getting dressed, it would be prudent to rotate the spot you choose to sit on.

A mattress for a large woman with Fibromyalgia, RA, and other health problems

A local furniture store is closing and is offering the following deals. I've read your blog and feel better informed but because of the low prices, I'm not sure which is the best deal. Also, I've wanted a Tempurpedic Rhapsody for several years but after reading your information I am concerned even at a deeply discounted price. After reading your blog, I'd really love a S&F Latex bed but no one in my area carries them and the price is prohibitive for me right now. Regardless, I'm in desperate need of a new mattress. 
I am female, 6'1", 350 lbs with fibromyalgia, rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes, congestive heart failure and sleep apnea, etc. so my health is poor and I have a horrible time sleeping.
My options (incl queen matt & box and frame) are:
• S&F Sherry $700
• S&F Rosita $800
• S&F Cleo $900 (either Ultra Firm or Luxury Plush); the sales guy said he wouldn't recommend the UF because it is their most returned item; however I think I remember you saying it had the best specs in that line?

Also, I'm doubtful I could qualify for financing but do you offer any type of layaway in regards to the S&F Latex line? I was looking at the queen set River View Villa Firm.

Hi Angie,
None of these mattress, alone, will do the job. However, those prices are hard to pass up. The first thing you need to consider is support. The best of them is the S&F Cleo in ultra firm. To achieve the surface comfort you need for your fibro and RA, add a latex topper. In your case, I would suggest two 1.5" latex toppers...one soft Talalay and one Dunlop. This combination sleep system will support your size and comfort the surface without losing its shape. Unlike the paddings inside the mattress, latex is extremely resilient...as well as comfortable. I have a male friend your size with this same sleep system and it has been working well for him for the last couple of years since he bought it.

Latex Mattress topper for comfort and longevity

Hi Gary,
Top line mattresses are always an expensive mistake. You simply cannot indulge your sense of luxury and ignore the more important issue of tending to a bad back. This is one of those,"can't have you cake and eat it too" situations. The latex companies we deal with allow for only 3/4" impression for authorization to exchange....not 2". In fact, most mattress manufacturer's allow for in impression of 1.5". So, you see, the company that made yours is likely to be an off brand and was sold has high end by your retailer.  However, Before buying anything, flip your mattress over and sleep on the underside for a few days. I'm sure your back will feel better. It is likely to be a little firmer than you like. If so, add a 2" soft Talalay Latex Topper to that for the comfort you want.  Quite often, using the underside provides the firm support your back needs and the 2" soft Talalay latex topper provides the comfort you want...and all on a long term basis. We use the same latex topper on our mattress at home. We are large people and the topper is still like new after 5 years of use.
