Equal? No. And you wouldn't want it to be. The thin gauge wire of the plush models creates a greater depth of softness. Simmons Beautyrest mattress used at hotels

I recently stayed at a La Quinta Inn & Suites and fell in love with the bed I slept on. I've been trying to find it online. I guess it is the Bright Morning Bed by Simmons. If you have any information on these mattresses & box springs in king size please let me know. Also I don't know if you deal with pillows but those were the only ones I have been able to sleep comfortably on without getting headaches. So any info you can give me will be greatly appreciated, thanks!

The model names for the same mattress is alas different at each hotel as they are at each retailer. The Simmons Beautyrest Recharge Classic, known as Flatbrook from us, is typically the mattress you will find at hotel that use Simmons. Here is a link to that mattress.

Pillows have to be the hardest things to buy and be happy with. We carry latex pillows. They are comfortable and very long lasting. If you want a pillow like the one at the hotel, I suggest bringing a pillow you have and don't like with you the next time you stay there...and swap it with one there that you do like.

There is no point in spending a lot of money on a mattress for a teenager who will use it full time for only a short while. There are very good mattresses at reasonable prices that will work just fine.

Latex topper for an Innomax air mattress

I have a Innomax Medallion mattress. It is constructed from bottom up as follows: 6" air mattress, 1" multi-zone high resilience convoluted foam, 1" (unknown material) moisture barrier, 1.5" 4lb memory foam, 1.5" 1 ILD talalay latex, 3" synthetic pillow top.

It is not fixing my back ache. My thoracic spine below my hips and shoulders. My spine is straighter and my back aches is less if I: 1) put a pillow under my ribs, and/or 2) remove the pillow top. Perhaps being closer to the latex is providing the upward force I need in my mid back. What do you say about getting rid of the pillow top, putting the HR foam underneath the air chamber, and adding 1" of dunlop on top of the 3" talalay/memory foam layer? 

Is there a potential health problem (like mold) with no mattress cover and just sheets in between me and the latex? How much latex minimum on top of an air chamber? Thanks. Adam

 

Hi Adam,

The pieces to remove would be the pillowtop, the convoluted the memory foam. All of these are items are hurting your back.

Once you've removed these, decide what kind of surface feel you want and add the appropriate latex topper.

i.e. Dunlop for a firmer, more dense feel or Talalay for more comfort...either soft or medium.

With a bad back, be careful of going too soft. 1.5" of soft Talalay under 1.5" of Dunlop is a nice mix for firm comfort.

The toppers will come with a cover....so you won't be without. You never have to worry about mold or mildew with latex and you'll find that it sleeps cool.

Mattress Advice for a plus size woman, Simmons Beautyrest Black?

I am 68 years old, female, weigh 297, sleep on my side, like a firm mattress, but put pad on top for more softness.

I have been looking around and everyone is suggesting the Beautyrest Black series (which I slept on at a hotel and loved it with a 4” down mattress cover).

 

Would you suggest that mattress for me?  Which model?  Do you sell them?   What about a topper?  My son told me to forget the down and go latex.

 

I also tried the latex beds, too expensive for me, and too hard as well.

 

I would appreciate your help and to be able to purchase things from you as well.

Hi Andrea,

Of all the commercially made, one sided mattresses, the Simmons Black is a best buy...and especially for a large person. My wife and I have a Black model with a latex topper. We are, each, over 200 pounds and the mattress still looks and feels like new after the 16 months we've had it. And if that's all you had to choose from, I'd suggest going with the strongest and firmest of them, the Bray model, for someone in the 300 pound range. Shown here:

However, there is an alternative that is stronger still, and less expensive. It's more an old fashioned mattress, in that it is two sided. Also, it has no memory foam in it, which is a good thing for a number of reasons...memory foam's lack of durability among them.

It isn't a commercially made model, but one of four we have made for us by the Therapedic Company, called Cameo Firm. In other words, it's not something you can try anywhere.

Many people are unaware of the health benefits of an all latex mattress, as they are not as well promoted as memory foam.

The question becomes, "Which model to choose?".
Part of the beauty of getting a latex mattress is the additional availability of the latex mattress toppers, which are used to alter the surface feel to your taste.
As you look at the link, you'll notice the price points from least expensive. They correspond to the firmness levels. The Pamper model is the firmest of them, but not a hard bed. They get a little softer with each level up. The Beautiful model, in my opinion, provides as luxurious a feel as anyone could want. The World's Best Bed model strikes me as being too soft.

How to chose a mattress that is soft and will last

Your choice of a "soft" mattress coupled with the inferior foams the industry uses to make plush mattresses, is why you need a new one so often. To get around this problem, start with a good quality firmer mattress that will hold its shape and provide the proper support for you back. Add to that a 2" soft Talalay latex topper for the comfort you want...and comfort that will last for many years. My wife and I use one at home. It's 5 years old, and in like new condition. And, we are considerably heavier than the two of you. It'll cost a little more initially, but a whole lot less in the long run. The firmer mattress and the latex being a much higher quality product than the poly and memory foams used in most mattress combine for a long term solution to the low quality "plush" products offered by the mattress industry today.

Our latex topper come with a fitted polyester cover, which is provided by law because of the flame retardant backing.

We use a topper at home and have a 2nd of r when we travel. We find the cover to be unnecessary...and really, more trouble than it's worth.

Lay the topper directly on the mattress and cover both with your mattress protector.

The topper never shifts or bunches and never needs repositioning.

It's one of the few really high quality, all-natural products left in this country...and being able to set it and forget it makes it that much better.

Mattress in College, needs support and comfort

Dear Pete,
I am a college student who sleeps on the dorm mattress they provide (can't really give you a brand or anything, but they are blue and pretty sturdy). Beneath the mattresses are flat springs laid across the metal frame. There is no bed frame, just the sheet of metal spring the mattress rests on.
I weight about 200 pounds and I'm around 6 feet tall. I suffer from a herniated disc and sciatica down my right leg. Because of that, I now mostly sleep on my back but also my side too. The thing is, I'm not sure if I am in a position to buy a new mattress. I would still like a recommendation. The thing I'm more concerned about is if this mattress is damaging my back. Would it do better to take it off the springs and lay it on the ground to sleep? Also, is there anything I can do with pillows? Thanks - Nathan

Hi Nathan,
I'm sorry to hear of one so young suffering from such a back problem. It's a chronic problem you will have for the rest of your life. How well you deal with it when you're older will directly relate to how well you take care of it, starting now. Be sure to take a brisk walk for a half hour everyday.
The herniated discs are pinching a nerve in the small of your back, which causes the sciatica.
Those discs require firm support, while contouring of your back is needed to relieve the sciatica.
First, get a 3/4" sheet of plywood to put between your mattress and those springs. This will take care of the disc support. Next, add a 2" layer of soft Talalay latex to the top of your mattress, which will provide the contouring comfort you will need to relieve the sciatica and allow you to sleep deeply. With the proper night's sleep, you'll find your lessons easier to remember...as an added bonus.
