Therapedic two-sided Medi-Coil, best for sitting

Hi Pete,

I've been reading your amazing blog and I had a question.  I'm a older woman

about 5'6" 300 pounds with some knee problems.  I'm looking for a new queen

mattress.  What is a little different about my situation is that I sit on the side of

my bed and work on the computer for many hours during the day.  I tend to sit

in the same spot, about 20 inches from the head of the mattress.  The mattress

I currently have has low profile base and the total height with the mattress is

about 25 inches.  It's the perfect height.  I couldn't go any lower and could go

higher by an inch or two at the most.  Could you tell me what mattress would

be best while meeting my needs for sitting on the side?

Hi Linda,

You can't have had a lot of luck with mattresses under those circumstances.

Mattresses don't hold up well for edge sitting under average body weight.

I would strongly suggest getting a chair to work from.

The strongest beds we have are the Therapedic two-sided Medi-Coil

models. With a standard bed frame at 7" high, the firm model will be 25.5" high.

The plush model will be 27" high, using a lo-profile boxspring with either.

The model name is different at every store. We have it as Joyce Street.

Stearns & Foster Heidi mattress, sciatica

Hi Harriet,

The Josette is usually shown in ultra firm, which is harder than luxury firm.

The Stearns & Foster Heidi is basically the same as the Josette, but without the 1/2" of memory foam.

The model name for these mattresses are different at every store. Our Heidi is called Vanna at Macy's, for instance...exact same mattress.

The nerve center for the lower half of your body is in the small of your back. A nerve at that location is being pinched. This is what is causing your sciatica. With your sine in proper alignment, you'll take the pressure off of that nerve and your sciatica will go away.

Delivery and set up are free. There is no sales tax. However, our delivery service will not remove the old set. 

As stated in my original response, the 2" soft Talalay latex topper is the one to get with this mattress. You'll experience surface comfort that will allow you to sleep deeply. The latex topper will aid in maintaining your spinal alignment and add longevity to the mattress.

Mattress Advice - Degenerative Disc Disease - Adjustable Bed - Reverie Dream System‏

Simmons Comforpedic vs. Tempurpedic mattress

Between the two, the Simmons Comforpedic is superior. The memory foam is less

temperature sensitive and more resilient. And, the Tempurpedic off gasses some

very toxic chemicals.
There are firmer Comforpedics that you can opt for.
Another option is an innerspring with a latex topper to relieve the pressure points.

Latex is, by far, superior to any memory foam in performance, comfort and

durability. Starting with a Simmons Beautyrest mattress in luxury firm will also help

to relieve pressure points.
It sounds like your biggest obstacle is your husband.
Men and women are built differently, shaped differently. And, quite often, disagree

S&F Carried Away mattress replacement

Hi.  Love your website.  Based on prior posts by others I think I know what you’ll answer, but here’s our situation.  In 2009 my wife and I bought a S&F Carried Away Firm.  I am 5’9” 165 she’s 5’6” 125.  The mattress felt great for about 9 months.  Then we started to feel like we rolled to the middle.  My wife would complain that she was sleeping in a valley.  Over the next few years it got less and less comfortable.  Recently Macy’s sent out an inspector and found that we qualify under the warranty for a replacement.  The new mattress will be a S&F.  We don’t want to go through the same experience again.  What do you suggest in terms of the best S&F mattress?  I am guessing you’ll recommend the Vanna and that we buy a latex topper?  If so, which topper?

Hi John,

The Vanna, our Heidi, in luxury firm is one we recommend often. We also recommend the mattress you have. 

In your case, going with the Vanna is a few steps down in price, which is fine if you can use the remainder of the difference in price elsewhere in the store.

However, if you are going to lose money on the deal, stay with the Cayla, our Twila, in luxury firm as an even trade.

Either way, add a 2" layer of soft or medium talalay latex to the surface for the comfort and longevity you're looking for.

The latex provides pressure point relief and muscular relaxation that you won't get with the mattress alone.

What's more, the latex topper will double the life of the mattress. Latex is extremely resilient, absorbing most of your body weight, which relieves the pressure on the mattress.

The Wynn Hotel mattress is a mid line Sealy Postuepedic. They feel good at first, then lose their shape. There were complaints about that on the blog.

The Therapedic Cameo plush uses the same coil unit, but is otherwise, much better made...and plenty comfy.

We engineered those two-sided mattresses almost 5 years ago. The first test case was my daughter, who is a very large woman 6' plus and 300 lbs. plus. She has had her Cameo plush for more than 4.5 years now. It still looks and feels like new.
